***********************************************

There is nothing scholarly about Elina's reaction to the horror looming over her; in her desperate scramble to get away, she turns onto her back and flails arms and legs in futile defense. The hesitant lethargy of the Hellbinder's ropes and appendages that marked the success of her previous escape appears to have vanished behind a coordinated precision of limb and loop. Rope coiled into "feet" claim support on the flagstones around her person, and the pale gray of the grasping hand clutches eagerly at the air as it dives toward her.

***********************************************

Grading a big pile of Statistics exams, so the pages are coming a bit more slowly for another few days. As (almost) always, Elina was drawn using the awesome references given me by the awesome stock model, Emily, at Feathered-pics . If you like what you see, please let her know. Thanks, Emily! Your expression here was perfect.

The reference image I relied on the most is not posted on Emily's gallery.

Enjoy!

Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

Thank you, Molly! I think it's no mystery why I've drawn so many Elina pages in this storyline--Emily has really hammed it up, as it were, in the expressions. She's been a great sport, and I've enjoyed the whole, long harrowing journey. Thanks for following along and commenting.

There's a real 'horror-movie' vibe to Elina's pose here - and I think some really excellent work with the shadows.

Dare I say that Elina's scholarly body is looking much less 'taut' that some of the other victims - nicely realised, very much approve. :-D

darknessence [2014-10-11 04:23:26 +0000 UTC]

Ok, so a couple things....

Those fingernails, from this angle, look a whole lot like spider fangs, which is certainly apropos, given the whole spider-hand thing that's going on here. I don't know if that is accidental or purposeful, but it sure does take this image to a whole other level of creepy. However, the effect is somewhat spoiled for me by the uncanny resemblance of the curlicued rope "feet" to the wrought-iron legs of a set of patio furniture that I owned a while back.

I would certainly agree that at this point, Elina's scholarly detachment is a thing of the past, and from the absolute terror in her eyes, I suspect most of her rational functioning is also history. Now that her resistance is broken, as it surely must be, it's going to be interesting to see what use he makes of his new plaything. Before we get to that however, there's a couple loose ends to tie up...

I like the effect of the shadows of the ropes falling across her body. The only thing that could cast the light to cause those shadows would appear to be the doorway to above ground. Poor Elina: so near and yet so far!

faile35 In reply to darknessence [2014-10-17 08:39:46 +0000 UTC]

Patio furniture! There's a great blooper idea in there, somewhere--I just know it.

Thank you for the insights and compliments! Regarding the light source you pointed out, I made a conscious decision here to violate/exaggerate the physics of the underground situation without an apparent realistic explanation for it beyond artistic composition. The highlights in her eyes underscored/fixed the terror of the moment and her expression for me, which meant that some source of light had to be placed before her, even though the room's natural light source is off behind her and to the left where the aforementioned doorway to the cellar's bulkhead entrance is watched by two members of the Vandermoor House Guard. If necessary, I might suggest the official narrative include the tripping of a rune or two by the Hellbinder's hand as it scuttles into the chamber to explain the light, because the shadows do seem a bit too stark and precisely placed for it to be simple reflected lighting from that dim doorway behind her.

"Plaything." I like the sound of that...

Thank you! I normally overlook the rope texture other than those twisting lines that are actually quite oversimplifying the complexity of how rope is made. So, on a close-up like this, I must respectfully defer to the reality of rope-making and give it a more honorable treatment. I'm glad you approve.

The "how many pages are left" issue is really a trap at this point, because my mind is growing more and more like the end of the Pompeii movie as the chapter continues onward, but there is absolutely NO point in shorting these next ___ pages that are such a ("the") critical images lots of people (me) have been waiting for in Elina's story arc. Damned if I do. Damned if I don't. So, what's another page or three showing Elina in desperate straights with those delightful wrinkles of tension and terror furrowing her brow...

Oh, uh, pardon me. What were we saying...?

Elina may have taken the first 2 rounds, but those were just the exhibition. Unfortunately for her it looks like Round 3 is going to be for all the marbles and Hellby seems to have brought his A game (and the rest of him hasn't even shown up yet). Of course, given Elina's propensity for escaping certain binding I'm not counting her out just yet, but it does look like Elina will have to pass her 'Teflon Damsel' title back to Callista.  Who hopefully will only be holding on to it for a short period.

"Teflon Damsel" Great image. At 200 appearances in this storyline, many of which she has shared with other major characters (besides potential captors), Elina has really given me a run for my money. If the Hellbinder doesn't pull it off this time, I'm giving up and moving to Port Sessen for good... Thanks!

This conclusively settles the question of whether or not severed-hand-rope-spiders should make passes as damsels with glasses.
Elina with glasses: Gus and the intact rope-dude couldn't bring her down.
Elina without glasses: The severed-hand-rope-spider alone is about to do the deed.
Lesson learned.  Take away the hot-nerd's glasses before bondagizing her.  You can always put them back once she's bound & gagged.

Say...  while we're talkin'... I don't suppose the severed-hand-rope-spider has any plans for Elina's Hanes-for-Damsels™ nether-unmentionables, does he?  I only mention her unmentionables because this could be an opportunity for the first ever Medieval/Fantasy Panty-gag, a new frontier in Sorcerous Villany!  Ignoring the cooties question, it would mean you'd have to talk Emily into providing the appropriate reference image, probably several, but still...    Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to crawl back under my rock.

faile35 In reply to vvvan [2014-10-17 08:16:24 +0000 UTC]

Okay, let's see if I can clear up any potential confusion. Any and all confusion in this regard is due to my own challenged vocabulary, I think. The underwear that was used as a gag back in was not intended to be panties, which seems to be what you ( vvan ) have suggested toward the end of this thread. Uncertain of what to call the "undertunic" or "shift" she was wearing, I referred to it as "underwear" in the Artist Comments. That's something that will likely need to be decisively cleared up during the publication of Fair Harvest when Deirdre goes running around in hers while sporting a tail. The notion of a more decisive rendition/inclusion of a "panty-gag" was suggested to me by another commenter in a delightful email a few months ago as I completed Elina's "study sequence" and moved onto her confrontation with the Hellbinder. At the time it was not something that was bouncing around in my noggin, as it were, but I've tried to provide the idea some fertile ground to fall in, germinate, and take root. Part of the extent of that "ground preparation" is visible in the departure of these last few pages from what I had planned for this capture sequence for the past three years. In short, I'm trying to play my cards right in the ongoing game with/against my own imagination, so that something along those lines just might happen. While I've been a bit freely expressive along the way in this chapter (214 pages, you think?!?!? ), I'm pacing and producing these last images with deliberate, delicate precision so that they are ultimately satisfying to The Demon referenced in the Rats, Part 1 introduction, and things are looking good.

That's a rather big rock you're crawling under. Mind scooting over to make room for company...

Oh, and regarding Emily's reference photos, she gave me sufficient imagery for a gagging scene with Elina, though I perhaps missed a perverted artist's opportunity to ask her to use panties as a gag in her images. Damn. Hindsight is 20/20...

Nice thoughts there, Jeff.
But!
Pedantry, ahoy!
In faile35.deviantart.com/art/Boo… , we see her scholar's robe being divested and Elina didn't have a shift on beneath it, as it revealed her stylish undergarments from Dernheim's Victoria's Secret.
(Alternatively, we could say the zombies ripped it off with her scholar's robe, but they don't strike me as the most efficient bunch)

It looks a little big for the wad he is holding on the next page, but the "strip of her shift/dress or whatnot" was my intent.

I really appreciate observations like these you've made. Drawing/telling this story the way I am, continuity can be an issue, especially when it comes into conflict with the composition in a particular drawing or two, and trying to describe in words what I'm seeing visually in my mind's eye only provides more chance for errors. After the fact, I can digitally go in and fix a missing gremlin or extra rope here and there, or, in extreme cases, re-draw an entire image in order to correct one of the oversights I admittedly (freely) tend to make. I try, and I do alright, I guess, but there's no excuse for having multiple objective eyes from different viewpoints going over it all and voicing observational feedback. As long as no one gets overly "whiny" or "accusatory" about it, these things are genuinely welcome, and nothing I respond with should be taken as defensive.

Thank you!
