"Sparkling key, belongs to me," the gremlin chitters in her ear, "Lady's eyes, the Other's prize." Both spurred onward and disrupted by the panicked shivers of her spine, Elina's attempt to expel the small creature from her shoulder results only in awkwardly raising her upper body on her hands. Even without her glasses the Scholar sees clearly enough this close to meet the creature's malevolent gaze in the instant its arms pull the necklace up about her neck. The memory of the Cat Witch's strangling grip on her throat causes her breath to catch, but as exhausted and terrified as she is, Elina knows she can crush the life from the little fiend long before it could choke her with the necklace.

***********************************************

Elina was drawn using awesome references given me by the awesome stock model, Emily, at Feathered-pics . If you like what you see, please let her know. Thanks, Emily!

This is the most heavily consulted image I used.

Enjoy!

Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

Really enjoying your story and art. Cant wait for the last 10 or so pages. Will the Hellbinder give the gremlin a low five if he surprisingly captures Elina. A one handed Hellbinder, sounds kinda funny. Hellbinder has had a really bad time lately. He must be smouldering to get his hands (hand) on someone's throat or ear; all he could manage really.  Hellbinder will need someone to turn pages of books now if he needs info or spells. Will the Cat and friends return before the big showdown, where is Luther? Surprise me storyteller.

Your comment here inspires lots of good alternative storyline bloopers of the poor Hellbinder dealing with his loss. I'm thinking I'm going to be having more fun with this storyline when the actual story is all through and I start putting the extra features and bloopers together as intended!

I hope the surprises that are currently on deck are... well. sufficiently surprising. Thanks a bunch!

Gus reaaally should be more careful, considering what has happened to other people who tried to lay hands on Elina.

He's feeling a little emboldened by his own survival, perhaps. "What, you mean everyone else died and I made it?! Ha! I'm king of the world...!"

Yeah, he probably deserves to take an elbow to the face for such overconfidence...

Awww, that's so sweet.... Gus is giving Elina a noogie.
Next thing we know, she'll be shaking hands with Uncle Hellbinder.... well, 'Hand' anyway.
Mwah hah hah....😈

A noogie! I didn't see that, but now, I can't not see it.

And, yes, a bit of handshaking is likely in the cards... Thanks!

Heh heh, sorry about that Jeff....😄
Have to confess Gus is one of my favourite characters. .. I'm sure there'd be a market for Gus dolls out there (though Rule #1 : Don't leave them at the top of any stairs with rope....)😊

This image totally adds to the reality that Elina is just physically out of energy. If she had any at all, she could grab the key with one hand and fling the gremlin into the wall with another. The fact that she's just looking at him is the largest herald of her imminent defeat. It is imminent, right? I know you keep saying it is, but you're losing credibility here, dear.

Without wanting to be pessimistic, one could perhaps be forgiven for sharing your concern, considering that she has been captured and bound and/or imprisoned six times already, and escaped or was released each time:

1/1st capture by zombies, after her fall down pit. Uses her own spell to escape magic ropes
2/ Uses magic rope to retrieve key to escape cell
3/ Escapes zombies a second time, thanks to Luther
4/ Escapes Hellbinder's ropes by activating anti-binding charm on dress
5/ Escapes Hellbinder by setting him on fire, and using key to create portal
6/ Escapes Hellbinder's ropes through having the portal's collapse sever his hand

If you include the aforementioned rescue from the pit by Luther, and her escape from Annalae's attempt's to kill her, Elina has been imperiled eight times, and has survived each one. I think it's reason for a certain measured skepticism, no?

SPOILERS ALERT!!!

You make a good point here with these. Elina has definitely enjoyed more than her share of degrees of escape in the past. Valerin had a half-escape mid-chapter that was not as effective as Elina's was from her cage early on, but it suggests that if we do the division of the current Bookbinding into two chapters as I intend, then what we have is a struggle for total capture that results in failure for one chapter, and (most likely) success in the latter chapter. The first division sees Elina's road to captivity going through ups and downs until she's forced down on the worktable and stripped and tied, where Luther frees her. The second division sees her road to captivity going through ups and downs as well, but she's now in that ever-precarious spot in these capture sequences where she's so very close to freedom but her cards are all played. Like Avora who destroys all but one of the sleeper's bane blossoms, like Valerin who makes it to within a couple of steps of breaking out into the inn proper, like Annalae who makes it to within a short catnap of getting her deadly guardian back at her side, Elina has run the good race (run and run and run), and fought the good fight (and fought and... ) but here she is worn out on the floor, no strength, no magic, no clear sight, with pursuit approaching from behind, and her only potential weapon now (next page) being taken from her.

Essentially, all that's left are the restraints and the delicious way her body fights against them...

END SPOILERS.

Well I'm glad someone else said it too, but yeah .... you can't help but be a tiny little bit (or a whole lot) skeptical when it comes to Elina's "imminent" capture.  The rate things are going, I'm going to have no choice but draw the conclusion that Jeff's just a big ol' nice guy at heart, and can't bear the thought of poor Elina being captured.  Or .... he's a sadist and is enjoying the moans and groans he's engendering with every #%&$ing new escape ....

Perhaps it's "imminent" in geological terms ...

"'imminent' in geological terms..."

To answer the implied question, I eagerly anticipate the final capture in question, but that journey is sooooooo, soooo satisfying if she puts up more of a fight. At this point, Elina has written the book on fighting back, as evidenced by the thread here. And, I'd really like to be a big ol' nice guy at heart as much as I'd like to be a sadist, but the truth is I'm just...

...really...

...really...

...slow...

and we love ya for it!

Having been down this road (or different but somehow similar ones) before, I've no doubt we're in for pages and pages of fun.  Still, Elina has us all a little spooked, which is indicative of nothing more than damn good storytelling.  Great fun, thanks!

Hush! Stop with the "pages and pages" stuff! Right now! I mean it! The chapter needs to end for everyone's sanity. Also, Jeff's drawing boards REALLY need to be cleaned and he won't let me do it until the chapter is over. So stop!!

... but I thought there are only ten pages left? I'm absolutely certain I read that somewhere recently. I'm sure there's nothing to worry about; it's not as if Jeff would ever draw out the final capture sequence with gratuitous extra bondage and nudity images, after all.

See? Feel better now?

I would, except I'm here looking at two half-finished images (which are awesommmmeee!), and paper stretched for 10 more. I just counted. There are also 4 more half-finished images, but I'm pretty sure they belong in a later chapter, so I'm not going to worry about those yet.

Nice!  Every time there's one of these two or three day 'lulls' it always turns out that something especially fantastic is in the works, and I've been getting the feeling this won't be an exception.  Just please please tell me that none of those ten images have Luther storming in to save the day!

I've been listening to him tell me how it was going to end for...I was going to say weeks, but I think it's longer than that...and he lays it all out: First this will happen and then that, and the whole thing will be done in 10 more images. Then two days later I look over at his computer and he's drawing something different than what he said, and the ending is still about 10 pages away. He'll say I'm exaggerating, but I bet if you asked him he'd say there are about 10 more pages to the chapter.

P.S. Love you, sweetie! *waves from across the room*

This whole thread is just chalk full of bullshit! People shouldn't be allowed to post this kind of drivel.

For those who are concerned, there are only about 10 pages left in this chapter....

Okay, seriously, regarding Elina's "imminent" capture, let's wait until the chapter is over and I'll address it where no real spoilers are necessary.

And, really, please carry on.

I would think that Gary Gremlin there strangling her with a noose would be a more vivid memory than Anna at this stage, or her recent ordeal with the rope around her neck from Uncle Hellby.

I really like the way you've realised Elina's throat here (love that sternocleidomastoid, weird neh?) Gus is really going above and beyond here - though I did wince a little at the thought of the little fiend being crushed... don't sink to their level, Elina :-D

Thank you! I tend to understate such details unless I've got a good solid reference that portrays them like this. When requesting reference images from Emily, I've asked for shoulders, collarbone, and neck to be visible with the face so I can get those details right on drawings like this, and, as you can see on the reference image I thumbnailed up top, she gave me some awesome material to work with.

Yes!!    Go, Gus, the man with the plan!    Okay, if you want to get technical, he's not a man...yeah,he's not actually human anymore...oh, stop with the hair-splitting already! Can we not just enjoy this moment?

As natural as it is for Elina to recall her experience at Annalae's hands, if she was capable of even a moment's reflection, she'd realize that Helly wants her alive and kicking... OK, maybe thrashing ineffectually rather than kicking!! In that selfsame moment, she might recall that Gus is now very much aware of the importance of the key. Fortunately for those of us here at Team Evil, she is completely misguided in her fears, making it theoretically one simple flip upwards of the loop on the part of Gus and Elina loses her last line of defense! Excellent!!

Taken literally, poetry by a pro can be quite misleading and comically tragic in its interpretation--a hopeless novice like Gus (a.k.a. "Jeff") really doesn't have a chance...

A head butt with that size-difference falls under the "body-slam" category, I think. Thanks!
