***********************************************

A short distance down the darkened corridor, the Scholar decides to make a hesitant, shaky attempt to regain her feet. As she moves to find support against the near wall, her spectacles bring to view the disheartening reminder of the hidden runes etched on the walls and floor between herself and any potential exit to the surface. Runes of listening and observation, of concealment and deception, some glistening with magical power and others apparently lying dormant. With a trembling sigh that is barely a veneer over capitulation, Elina knows there will be no mad dash out of the labyrinth. Even if she had the strength to run, and even with the Hellbinder apparently stalled somewhere behind her, escaping the Undercellar will be a slow, careful process requiring concentration and the good fortune that none of the runes in her way will need to be countered by sorcery.

***********************************************

Note: For those who are paying attention, we sent away for the first proof of Rats 2 this morning.

As always, Elina was drawn using references provided by Emily at Feathered-pics . Thanks, Emily! As per a commentator's suggestion/request, I intended to post a thumbnail of the stock photo I used from Emily's gallery for this one, but it's not posted. As I looked through her gallery, I noticed a bunch of the references I used for her confrontation (thus far) with the Hellbinder, so I'll go and post those links in the Artist Comments of the appropriate pages.

Enjoy!

Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

I just love this; great pose, nice shading, a sense of forboding, of panic and running... Bravo.

Somehow I doubt that Lady Luck is going to be smiling on Elina in her bid for escape.

I think she's already made a few too many withdrawals in that particular account. Lady Luck is calling the loan due at this point...

Lady Luck certainly employees some intimidating repo men. She must be to tied up to take care of it herself.

No wonder she's a little on edge, that is some lousy looking wallpaper behind her....

She's passing through that "bad part of the Undercellar" where the gremlins practiced their graffiti with flashlights and badly-mishandled tracing templates. Jervil considered himself fortunate that their artistic vandalism was no worse than this while he was out of town, but he grumbled about it for 3.5 years after that...

Another amazing image, it really captures Elina's thin 'veneer over capitulation' (nice turn of phrase there).

Thank you, and thanks again. I think her hair had something to do with it, partly covering her face and hanging in uneven, heavy tresses. I'm glad you like it!

At least she still has her shoes. You're very kind to leave protective footwear on most of your heroines, you know? The posing and composition on this piece is great.

That's me: Mr. Kindness. I've been accused of kindness all too many times in my life. I'm honestly getting rather tired of it. When will people start to respect me for the cruel, heartless villain that I've always wanted to be...?

Thanks!

Nope. She's probably in better shape than I am, but given the Valerins, Callistas, Deirdres, and Dreas in this storyline, she's probably ranking "below average."

I quote Raiders of the Lost Ark (which I seem to be doing a lot these days because many people share in your wishing there, including myself): "I'm working on it, I'm working on it!" Thanks!

One thought occurs to me now. Luther ain't ever gonna find her now, even if she DOES slip the Hellbinder's approach... Plus she still has that friend/nuisance lurking somewhere nearby too.

Yeah, I'm going to have to go back in and add Luther's pages somewhere in there to account for the couple of days that Elina has spent on her own down here. That way when he shows up, calling out "Oh, Elina! Elina? Confound it all, where is that girl now?!?" people don't need to be asking themselves how long it'll be before she gets her "Drea-post-constriction-mirrorizing resolution scene"...

*LOL* Well alternatively, she could be gagged just on the other side of the door he's calling for...  oops, he walked down the hall, too bad for you!

I can only reiterate what Erick has said. Everything about her pose says, I know I'm done, but I can't just let myself sit here and wait, no matter how futile any gesture will undoubtedly prove to be. You've absolutely nailed her stunned shock, her crippling exhaustion, and her horrified dismay at the realization that there is a long, dark and dangerous passage before her, booby-trapped in the best traditions of Tomb Raiders, Indiana Jones, and the Mummy. The worst part of it is her awareness that, even in the unlikely case that she is somehow able to defeat the snares that await her, the light at the end of this tunnel will undoubtedly be the single, hell-spawn eye of her triumphant nemesis.

Kudos to Emily for giving you such powerfully suggestive poses,in the best sense of the term, and to you for for interpreting them so very skillfully. Well done!

Also, however awkward this phrase may be, I anticipate the arrival of more Rats with baited breath.

The awkwardness and irony of the phrases you share does not detract in the least from my enjoyment of them. On the contrary, it makes them that much more enjoyable. Thank you!

In a lot of ways, this is the sort of picture that sets your story apart ... I'm not sure how you manage it but this really conveys a sense of action laced with fatigue and desperation, and that's with no caption at all.  It's a little unnerving even, but there's a palpable sense of prey that's been just about run to ground, but unwilling to quite give up just yet.  Which is a long winded way of saying "great image!"  Thanks!

Thank you. A LOT of the credit goes to Emily for giving me some raw material to work with. If she had the reference for this one posted, I'd include the thumbnail in the Artist Comments above (I'm going to try and do that from now on), but I didn't see it in her gallery. She's great at acting the part and giving me good facial and body expressions, which I can tweak fairly well to exaggerate as necessary and sell the illustration. I guess I can take some credit there in asking her for a certain pose and point of view, but really not that much. I'm glad you like it, and thank you for the compliment.
