How do you NOT kill him off in ME1? I didn't start with 1 and apparently got a renegade ending without playing the first.

Well, if you have the first game, then you talk him down at Virmire. Your group leans that Saren has "cured" the Genophage, and is using it to clone Krogan. Wrex will want to save this cure for the sake of his people. Shepard has to talk to him, and help him realize that the Krogan on Saren's team are not real Krogan.
If you don't have the first game, there is a DLC that can be acquired which takes place just as Shepard gets Spaced. (So, at the very beginning). It's like an interactive comic where you choose the outcomes of the major events from ME1. (Who dies on Virmire, Save/kill Wrex, Save/Abandon the Council, and any possible romances.)
Either of these things keep Wrex in the remainder of the games. (Which s good, because Wrex is the best Krogan ever, and second only to Bakara.)
