I've been trying this coloring tutorial which is worlds different from the way I color...I used a rounded square textured brush, not a wedge brush so it's really interesting trying to compensate for the differences.

Ah well, I'm gonna try and finish the picture so i can post it up so you can see my futile attempt at using this tutorial XD

At the very bottom, in the second set of brushes, there a textured "charcoal" like brush that is square-ish size 90. That's the brush i use to color. In the first set are the brushes I use to do the hair (the sizes 20,34,40,80,175 ones).

They are especially helpful. The second pack also has the hatch brush I use in the backdrop of all of my bust commissions I freakin' love that hatch brush.

Brilliant tutorial! I'm such a dope when it comes to Photoshop brushes... I never really think to experiment with different brushes or mess with the settings. There's so much stuff in Photoshop that I haven't even been close to tapping into yet... this tutorial kind of inspires me to start messing around with it more. XD

that was a pretty cool and inspirational tutorial! i wish i could paint like you, i hope some day i'll get enough practice!
i was just wondering something... about the brush you use, for the line art and stuff, and how it fades away like with less pressure, just like a pencil!
how do you do that? i mean, i read the description and followed the instructions step by step. but i can't get it right... T_T it never looks like that. could you help me whenever you get some time?

what size do you normally start your composition at?
i know most artist go very large, how large do you go before you shrink it down??
.

fayrenpickpocket In reply to uglytoes [2007-07-12 00:49:37 +0000 UTC]

I usually start at 8x11 at 300 dpi, and then crop down or make it larger as need be from there. <3

where did you get the texture?

fayrenpickpocket In reply to qren [2007-07-12 00:50:12 +0000 UTC]

I googled a free texture site somewhere. I'm not entirely sure exactly where it was. I've saved it to my harddrive and had it for a while.

This actually helped A LOT!!! Thanks so much!!! *hugs*, I have a few questions though, besides the Watercolor Loaded Wet Flat Tip brush what other brushes did you use? For the lineart example, did you use the same brush? and was it the default setting or did you customize the opacity to it by then?

Just curious ^^, I LOVE the way you color and coloring is my favorite step of a drawing unfortunately I kinda suck at it, and this tutorial really helped me understand the process a lot more

Wow, this is really fantastic. I love how it's a tutorial on how to actually -paint- in Photoshop as opposed to the generic "coloring" in Photoshop tutorials that are all over the place. If that makes sense. >_>

I don't know if anyone's told you this in the comments already, but if you go to the control panel's wacom preferences, you can set the pen button to alt+click. It's the no. 1 reason I started coloring more often in photoshop again since I couldn't bear to leave the right click color picker in OC.. heh!

In wacom preferences, go to the tool buttons tab, select the modifier option, and then check alt and click.

I also like to set the other end of the button to (keystroke) spacebar so I can move the canvas around. :B For a while I made it an undo button, but I found the hand tool more useful.

Wow! Thanks for the sweet ' I hesitate to call this a tutorial, simply because I don't believe I'm skilled enough to be tutoring. (BS) So I think of this more as a glimpse at how -I- do things. And if you happen to like or learn anything from that, the better' thing. Very handy.
