Description Okay, I know the title sucks, but it was the only thing I could come up with. This is for to help him with his computer coloring-ness. If it helps anyone else, I will be very glad... and hopefully it is easy to understand. The same method also works in Adobe Photoshop, it's just a little different. Whee, you all get to see one of my latest drawings too! I'll color it sometime soon.

Your tutorial helped a lot, but I have a problem. I can only color in shades of grey, it won't let me use color.
I noticed that your channels say "red blue green alpha" but mine says "grey alpha" so that must be the problem. Do you know how to fix it so that my channel will be the same as yours?
I know you posted this a while ago, but I'm hoping you can still help. Thanks.

Sorry it took so long for me to reply, I've gotten very little sleep and haven't gotten to be online for the last few days. I think the problem is the color mode that the picture is set on. You should be able to go up to the menu (I'm not sure of exactly what it says because for some reason GIMP won't run for me anymore) but there should be an option on one of the menus to change the image mode. Change it from Greyscale to either RGB Color or CMYK Color (I recommend RGB if you can) and that should fix the problem.

You're welcome. I hope it works. I know that's how to do it in Photoshop and stuff, so I'd imagine it's relatively the same in GIMP.. I just can't test it.

Okay, I have all my coloring in diffrent layers for each type, but I can't make more than one at a time show, I've tried merge, but that only shows one layer, flatten same, what do I do?

Feimi In reply to PhoenixsAshes [2006-06-06 04:22:32 +0000 UTC]

hmmm... well for some reason now I can't get GIMP to run on my computer, but I'll try to think of how to fix it. Are all of them visible over in the layers menu on the side? I know that there are ways to make them visible or not visible. Try that.

PhoenixsAshes [2006-06-04 02:29:32 +0000 UTC]

Could you tell me what I did wrong?
I made multible layers for color, then I save dit, in JPEG, it said it would flatten and remove the transparancey, an It saved only one layer!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Feimi In reply to PhoenixsAshes [2006-06-04 14:41:46 +0000 UTC]

hmmm... do you mean that it saved only the top layer with the lineart and none of the colored stuff underneath? If that happened, then did you remember to cut out the white parts from the lineart layer? I think that may be the problem, but I'm not sure yet. Please let me know if it helps.

PhoenixsAshes In reply to Feimi [2006-06-04 16:56:21 +0000 UTC]

It saved the lineart and one layer of color, but not others.

Feimi In reply to PhoenixsAshes [2006-06-05 01:49:13 +0000 UTC]

hmmm... is there a layers menu at the top? If there is, see if there's a way to merge them. That might fix it.

There is yet another way...

Duplicate the layer as you stated, add in your middle layer with the white. Then on your duplicated layer (top line art) simply set the layer to "multiply". Then color away on the layer(s) below. If you have trouble with this one, let me know and I can help you further.

Feimi In reply to LDS-Jedi [2006-06-03 03:04:50 +0000 UTC]

Oh cool, I didn't know you could do it that way! Thanks.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LDS-Jedi In reply to Feimi [2006-06-03 04:37:12 +0000 UTC]

Saves a few steps doesn't it? Another thing you can do is once you have your line art layer set to Multiply, duplicate it again and Gaussian Blur it a little (5 or 10)... Leave this as multiply as well and you have some nice easy shading done.

Feimi In reply to LDS-Jedi [2006-06-03 19:52:34 +0000 UTC]

ooh, cool.

LDS-Jedi In reply to LDS-Jedi [2006-06-03 04:52:57 +0000 UTC]

Try this...
1) Open Gimp/Photoshop and load your lineart image.
2) Duplicate this twice to give you a total of three layers.
3) Fill the bottom one with White and set the other two to the layer mode "Multiply"
4) Gaussian Blur the top layer by about 10
5) add a transparent layer between the White background and the line art..
6) Color and shade as you normally would.

I actually take a line art, do the white to alpha, make a white layer on bottom, and use the magic wand to color on a top layer and shade everything on top of that.
It works very well! ^_^
