Description This is Stian (full name Stygian Stígandr Sætansen); a huge feline species named siderian. This drawing is highly inspired by the song 'Gateways' from Dimmu Borgir, particularly the part around 3.30 min (and 2.40) – www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0xZYm…

I imagine him in one of his nightmares...being chased by human hunters in a dark, snowy setting; first in a city like environment (still snowy and dark and surrounded by mountains). He’s wounded and tries to climb up a mountain- suddenly, when he’s nearly at the top he gets shot or hit by something and falls in an endless pit of darkness, fear and misery…

During his entire life he’s followed by nightmares, fear and rage caused by very bad experiences with humans. He surely suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. I will not go further in detail, because that is a too big spoiler for the next volume of my graphic novel series Reign of Siderians that will be about him actually. However, all people on DA that know Stian better may already be spoiled for the first volume that is named ‘Predator Control’.

It kinda reflects how I felt when I lived in the Netherlands, surrounded by nature destruction and people who didn't care at all... I still feel like it's an endless fight against nature destruction- sometimes. However, since I moved to Norway and learned more about human-wildlife interactions and conflicts (but also other environmental issues) - I got some hope...at least I could escape from the crowded country I lived in before. But still, Stian represents my inner frustration in a very extreme way.

More about him here: blackmystica.deviantart.com/ga… He’s got his own folder actually.
- Oh I actually forgot to draw his jewellery - will do that later if I don't forget it again.

Btw; the name Stian is not pronounced in the English way but in the Norwegian way (google translate on Norwegian pronounces it right) – like Ste (as Steve) - an (as ran, pronounced in the British way - oh and another example for the GoT fans: like the short 'a' as in 'Stark').

Art, character and species by me. Please don’t copy/use without my permission!

Sorry again for all the late comments...

I love the concept for this piece, it works so well stylistically - I love how the blood is vibrant and red, since dreams sometimes have enhanced colourschemes, and also the blood doesn't look real, but looks as if it was made with brushes (which I know it wouldn't have been since you don't use fancy brushes and all your stuff is hand-drawn in its entirety, but it's the effect it gives in this style, which really works for this image), adding to the sense of unreality, and the vibrancy of the blood also emphasises his fear and terror. I also love his pose, since it shows almost a sense of helplessness and panic as he tries to reach out and cling on to whatever he can grip, but any ledges only crumble and he continues to fall...
The pose and the blood and the snow also create a wonderful dynamic look and a sweeping energy to the image.
I think his expression works very well here, since at first it looks like anger, but is so many animals react with aggression to intense fear, and this is captured here in this drawing.
The chasm is nicely drawn too, but not overly detailed so it looks more vague and ominous, and also makes Stian stand out better against it - plus there is something reminiscent of a deep pool about it, as though he is not only falling through his fear, but drowning in it.

Interesting as well that he has PTSD (family experience of this actually ^^). He is a very strong character but he does have his weaknesses, and indeed seems almost more vulnerable to trauma than some others of your characters perhaps, especially considering how much it haunts him - but some things can leave a very deep mark on some people, some things that scar them forever. (though it's nothing like Stian, Adler does have nightmares - though these nightmares are more like memories, of the mistakes he had made and could not undo... could never forgive himself for. He tends to be rather verbally aggressive at times towards others, but in truth it isn't them that he hates, but himself... *I'll shut up now *)

As for the pronunciation of his name, that's always exactly how I had imagined it - I had never imagined any other pronunciation, indeed I'd be curious to wonder if anyone else HAD thought of another pronunciation since I'd always heard it that way so clearly in my head.

BTw - I've used my own made fancy brushes by having taken pictures of water colour splashes I've made . If I use fancy brushes it's usually the ones default in photoshop (for making painterly effects) or my own textured brushes, based of my own photos. But I prefer mostly to draw things by hand with paint brushes. When I'm lazy I make an exception - but still prefer my own fancy brushes

Ah, really? Interesting... I did think indeed that you did everything by paint brushes by hand when you could, but it's nice that you also have those textures which you made yourself to use. I just use (or rather, USED, back in the days when I did draw anything) standard round hard brush in GIMP for everything - anything else just doesn't work for me and feels unnatural, plus I feel like cheating so I don't use any downloaded brushes (ha, I actually kinda hate it when I see in some artists' works that they have clearly just used copypasta brushes like stamps for things like moons and clouds and such, urgh, just looks so fake and doesn't fit with the rest of their art and I feel as though it looks like they've just used "stickers" instead of being assed to detail things themselves. :'D). But unlike you, everything comes out looking like shit, but that's not the fault of the simple brushes but the fault of the idiot using them.

In most cases I indeed try to draw it all by hand, but there is an optimum in time-investment and desired result, since there is also a trade-off between art quality and art quantity if you have time as limiting factor (which I have). Anyway I do like using textures from time to time and I like experimenting with paint brushes. Paint brushes are kinda like traditional art, so this is not cheating in my eyes. But I regard using parts of photo’s too obviously as cheating and lazy too. If you see it too clearly it’s bringing the drawing out of balance. However, I still experiment a bit with it (by only using my own photo’s) – as these is actually called ‘matte-paintings’ and it is a digital art on its own. But using these blood splash brushes is something one also can do with traditional art, so trying to imitate that effect digitally is not cheating in that eyes. But I’m open minded and always want to try and experiment with methods, even though I may not support the idea. I try to think out of the box and find the most efficient way of drawing.

That is indeed true, sometimes I'd you plan a piece to be a quick one that you don't want to spend too long on then you might take some steps to reduce the time by some techniques like those you mention.
I know what it's like to have time limits though of course, last year was actually hell for me completely and to be honest even months later I still feel pretty broken after it. (not only was time an issue, but the things I actually had to do were things I mostly hated as well, and yet they took over everything for an entire year... )

And yes, I totally agree that whether it is like cheating or not depends very much so in the actual brushes in question - those which are like stamps or premade images and are used by lazy artists are definitely cheating, but brushes which mimic acrylic paints and such are very different and aren't like cheating.
I guess adding parts of photos, if done well and subtly can work, at least if it's your own photo too then technically it is also a piece of art which you 'made' too in its own way so you're still using and combining two pieces od your own art, I guess that is one way to see it!

Ah, I guess I never really thought about the blood splatter effect brushes as something that can be mimicked in real life since on traditional.art I use either ballpoint pen or coloured than pencils, I guess since I never use paints that didn't come up automatically in my mind.(I tend to hand draw splatter effects like those in that heraldic-style picture of Reiker. But I don't do it very well even if it is, or was... kinda fun. :'D)

I think your art seems very balanced in that respect, you don't seem to take very long to do it but it comes out wonderful and is always realistic with varying degrees of your own stylistic twist.

Ha, my own art, when I made it, was the antonym of efficient... I tried a lot of different ways of drawing things, but hey all.took too long, and they all looked like crap when finished. Hell, forget efficient, I'd just want for once in my life to produce something half decent, and that would matter so much and be such a rare and unbelievable thing for me that I wouldn't care if it took five years, I'd just want to at least once know the feeling of producing that wasn't awful and that I didn't hate immediately after finishing, or even before finishing. :'D

Wow, that's exactly what I thought behind this drawing!!! You bring it brilliantly into words! I really suck at using words. I think that even in fear, Stian's look is rather aggressive (maybe that has to do with his facial anatomy as well...). Humans are actually his biggest fear and he reacts upon that with aggression. If he has a chance, he would rather run and hide though. Bit it follows him everywhere. And I kinda fucked him up from the very beginning (before he was even born...maternal stress and so on) - so he's probably more sensitive to trauma than others. He appears strong - he wants to believe that he's strong - but he actually is pretty sensitive to some things like this. He's a lot like Nintu in that way. Nintu is a dominant bully, doesnt fear anything, but as soon as he's locked up somewhere (in a cage), or when he can't beat another cat, he reacts very stressed - usually by extreme pacing (something Stian would do too). ANyway my most stress- resistant emotionally stable character is Noiro. Definitely not Stian - even though he wants to believe he is.
Aww I can feel that pain of (yer) Adler too - regretting something and kinda never forgiving himself for certain actions.

Vannjaren In reply to FelisGlacialis [2015-09-21 23:20:06 +0000 UTC]

Really? I wasn't sure if my words were just a load of empty again, but that's what I felt from this - and you don't suck at using words, if anyone here does then it's me.
And yes, I thought so (and facial anatomy would have a part in it, but indeed I think a big part of it is that he reacts towards his fear with aggression, as he is doing here). And indeed, even if he can hide from the humans themselves, he can't hide from the memories and thoughts inside his own mind, as no matter where he goes he takes them with him, and cannot escape - and so keeps constantly falling in his dreams, as powerless to escape gravity as he is to escape his own torment.
And yes, Stian always seemed a bit to me like quite an unstable/volatile character on the inside, and one with quite turbulent emotions and feelings in spite of his more calm and impressive exterior - that inside he's actually quite vulnerable, almost fragile at some times perhaps even...
Ah, I remember you describing Nintu's personality like that - and indeed the way he reacted very "emotionally" when he came home sort of shows how stressed he had been when he was in that unfamiliar situation and afraid, so I can see how there would be parallels there with Stian, and I remember that about Noiro. And yes, no matter how strong Stian may appear to others, and how much he wants to believe that he is, how much he tries to be... inside his own head he can't disguise the truth, especially when it manifests in dreams and he is not awake to supress or control/manage it...

All characters have fears, doubts or regrets, but some are better at dealing with them than others. Out of my characters, I think Danzig definitely has to be one of the most stress-resistant, almost overly nonchalant and reckless - perhaps he often takes this outlook TOO FAR - on the other hand, Reivana can be quite highly-strung and easily panicked or stressed - and unpredictable during such moments (indeed, her "mad" sister is actually, despite her odd behaviour, a lot more balanced in her nature and more stable, even though it might appear to be the opposite from first impressions).
Adler actually is also fairly sensitive, and it was his sensitive nature which led to the mistakes he made marking him so deeply, because he was involved in something he never should have belonged in - he's actually pretty much broken now, and a shadow of his former self. Indeed, he had actually gone quite mad, and if Reivana had never have found him he probably would have tipped over the edge into insanity - a century of exile and his own guilt had taken a very heavy toll indeed, and he was suffering from sleep deprivation exacerbated in terms of fever from hepatitis *contracted due to poor health, and later becoming a chronic infection responsible for his yellowed sclera due to frequent jaundice*, which had pushed him into psychosis and detachment from reality at his worst, suffering from hallucinations. He tended to remit and relapse a few times, but if something hadn't happened to break the cycle and disrupt his way of thinking by giving him another focus, what was left of him would have been beyond saving.
If he had been less sensitive and more resilient, even though what he did would still have had an effect, it wouldn't have broken him to the same extent or so I expect... And ha, I'm not sure if he would appreciate your sympathy or tell you where to stick it. (as I said, he doesn't always make a good impression of himself - indeed not even to Reivana on their first meeting... :'D). But yes, that would be a terrible feeling to have to live with...
As for Reiker, I don't know where I'd put him in those terms, since some of his reactions seem almost contradictory but then again he's a complicated case.

Whoops, sorry... I made a small text-blob on my own characters there, feel free to ignore all of that. :'D (Adler is one character who often is not really in my head for a long time but then spams me for a few days, as he is doing now.) Also, I'll reply to your other message tomorrow when I get the time...

Hehe it’s not empty blabhblah – you really seem to understand Stian’s personality and his deepest feelings! Which I find kinda impressive. And indeed, this drawing shows him in one of his most helpless feelings – as you said, you can’t escape gravity. As I’ve started rewatching the anime Wolf’s Rain again, I see that the white wolf (Kiba) has probably been some trigger for Stian’s character to develop. Stian is also symbolically looking for paradise (or rather trying to a way out of hell, where he can find some serenity) and both, Stian and Kiba will never find it. But I see that this is just a correlation between the two, as Stian is SO complicated as character that it’s very difficult to trace the original inspiration sources (toooo many, including my own personality and feelings) for him back. But I also see a rather high correlation with Nintu indeed. Hard and tough on the outside, but rather vulnerable from inside.

Oh a little question about your comment on Nintu - why is the word emotionally written in these things: “ “? I mean it IS a pure emotional reaction and I don’t see a reason why other animals don’t have the same emotions and experiences as humans. Their limbic system is homologous to ours. But I don’t know how much you learn about homologies in medical studies, because when studying biology, you learn that humans are just animals and not so cognitively special in many aspects. Only the relative importance of certain stimuli to trigger certain emotional reactions may be different, depending on a species’ ecology (social stress in social animals for example).

Anyway I also love how your characters are so psychologically complex! You have thought about their motivations and psychology very well. You’re constantly applying ‘theory of mind’ on them, which makes them appear very realistic to me. I really feel sorry for Adler (yers, maybe I should change the name of mine, to avoid confusion or I refer to mine as mr.Krazjnev). The feeling of regret is something I want to explore in Thalarctos as well (I’m thinking of making him a PoV character too, especially because he’s initially an antagonist of Stian).  But anyway the way you describe how Adler’s physical health is influenced by his psychological suffering is interesting. Not many people get that far with thinking about their characters. What did happen to him again? I can't get back to drawings of him with text, as you have removed them...The only thing I know is that Stian sometimes gets skinny (even in his good times he’s rather lean) during more intensive periods of conflicts (how he tries to get rid of humanity -in which he will fail – is still under construction). He is at his best (both psychologically and physically) when his kittens are born and growing up. This is a very short period in his life that he actually doesn’t suffer too much from nightmares and this inner stress.

Funny BTW how Adler is sometimes popping up intensively and then disappears again. With me it’s Morten and Noiro who have that tendency while others are kinda constantly present at some intensity.

Ah, really? I guess I assumed I had my own understanding of Stian’s personality and feelings, but I was very unsure as to how accurate my own assumptions were compared to what you know to be his personality etc.. ^^ (apparently people seem to think I’m good at reading characters… ) And yes, I thought the depiction of him falling was very powerful in showing his helplessness since indeed gravity is something he can’t escape – and also he feels like, with gravity in this image of him falling, he is completely at its mercy – as he was once at the mercy of humans, and powerless during that time to fight back. Also, there is a sense of inevitability with gravity – which to me represents in Stian’s mind the feeling that no matter how hard he tries, he can’t stop his fears from becoming true, he can’t stop the humans alone no matter how he tries to fight it – and like gravity, it drags him downwards in his obsession, fear and rage. And ah, really? I have never seen Wolf’s Rain, but from what I have heard, I can kind of see a small hint of that in Stian, though again as you say it’s only a small similarity. And yes, there is a lot going on with Stian, and no one direct inspiration source – but indeed, I do see him quite a bit like Nintu, at least going on the videos I’ve seen of Nintu and what you describe him as. (in my case, I don’t have any characters where I can trace back inspiration sources – any links there may be are so tiny and distant that even I can’t find them. My brain just seems to spontaneously generate noodles… :’D)

Ah, that – hehe, bit of a weird explanation – sometimes in my country at least, when someone is described as being emotional, it refers to them as being overly dramatic and that they are overreacting to the situation – so I didn’t want to give that impression. I was meaning that in the video it was clear that Nintu was overwhelmed by powerful emotion, not that he was overreacting or being dramatic for no need as would sometimes be taken to be the meaning of “emotional”. ^^ But yes, I definitely agree that animals have the same emotions as humans, mammals most certainly do at least – animals just express their emotions differently to humans, after all, they can’t speak our language, but in their own languages of vocalisations and postures etc. they do communicate their emotions, and still definitely experience them. I think anyone who has had a pet of any kind would understand that animals have emotions, and a wide range just like ours. In some animals it is harder to read what emotions they experience, but just because we can’t always read them doesn’t mean they don’t still experience them, as I’m sure you’ll agree. (and indeed, the limbic system is homologous – though actually, when you mention about learning homologies, you may be interested to know how much we cover on that – ABSOLUTELY F***ING NOTHING. I find it odd myself that we never even mention comparisons with other species even ONCE in our course, to me it seems logical – and I do it in my head all the time, but sadly the course itself says nothing on this topic, apparently it doesn’t think it is relevant – which I disagree with. After all, veterinary and human medicine could make greater advances by working together more – some advances made on humans could be used to help animals, but also vice versa – which a lot of medical doctors don’t seem to realise or appreciate.) And indeed, I never really thought of humans as being so “special”, hehe, we’re still basically apes in clothing at the end of the day no matter what most people think. Ha, yes, different stimuli are of differing importance relative to an animal’s lifestyle and niche, but even if the emotional reactions are triggered by different things, the animals are still more than capable of them. Actually, something I found interesting was that some small experiments have shown that bolas spiders less than 1.5cm in size have individual personalities relating on how they react to prey – some would try to attack every time regardless of if they had already caught prey, some would swing on some occasions and not others, and some would hide more and only swing once when they needed prey, and remain hidden the rest of the time – and so on. The spiders themselves were physically identical, so these seemed to be traits of personality – and in something as small and relatively “simple” as a tiny spider. If even such small spiders can have individual personalities and character traits, then to attribute animals like mice, lizards, cats, birds, fish and deer etc. as to be totally emotionless seems more than a little bit off or jarring to me.

And WOW, you actually think that of MY characters?!?!?! I was not expecting to hear that, especially since I hadn’t talked about them much before with you – and also your own characters are so fantastic and well-made that I thought mine would look so flat and boring and poorly though-out by comparison. And yes, I constantly think about the points of view of my characters and how their experiences shape their outlooks and reactions, and interactions with other characters… I guess I just constantly think about them, and I see them all as very alive in my head (some of them are more dominant in how much they stalk my neurones, but they all feel alive – some of them I know better simply because I have known them for longer. I would say though that it really means a lot to hear this from you and from a few others – because they all feel SO real to me, it’s often hard for me to know how real or believable they seem to others because from my own perspective inside my head they feel that way. And I have to admit, so do I… he may have made mistakes, but the result of these mistakes and how it has impacted on his life isn’t, in my opinion at least, proportional to what he had done. And hehe, no need to change your Adler’s name – after all, as I explained before, the same name doesn’t bother me; plus it’s only the first name that is the same, since of course his full name is Adler Valgrim Gerhardt Von Kriegr. :’D And as for confusion, most of the time depending on the conversation it’s clear enough who is meant – but indeed, hehe, maybe we can refer to them as Mr. Krazjnev and Mr. Von Kriegr in such times.  And ah, that would be interesting to see where Thalas’ regret comes from and what he does that causes him to doubt and rethink his past actions – but I’m sure I will get to know soon enough, and hmm, he could work well as a PoV character perhaps indeed. ^^

Ah, yes… indeed, for me the two things are often linked, and usually a decline in one at least in some way impacts the other. (and ha, in my case, I swear I think about them too much – my brain is infested with noodles. ) As for what happened with him, I may be able to, if you’d like, note you with a summary of what happened to him – and I could also put up his old drawings in stash if you’d want, since I know if you’re a very visually-oriented person it may help for you to see him as you read it, even if the pictures are fairly old they still give an idea of his appearance, so you can “put a face to the story” ) If you'd like that, just let me know and I can put it somewhere you can see it and give you a note about him. (didn't want to put it here since I have a bit of a   going on here already - whoops! It seems I still haven't gotten any better at keeping the under control... ^^')

In Adler’s case, the driving force between his ill health was his guilt – whilst some characters can deal with guilt to some degree, Adler is actually rather bad at coping with it (he can be a bit highly strung at times), and tends to obsess over his regret, and especially since he was exiled for what he had done… he had no one to share his burden, and nothing else to keep him occupied, so all he had for company was his own regret and guilt, so it seemed his only focus was directed towards reliving his mistakes until it almost destroyed him – and very nearly did. At first, his past mistakes prevented him from sleeping, as whenever he did, he saw nothing but memories he had tried and failed to suppress (and the reason why he failed to move on was likely linked to the fact that he kept returning to his guilt repeatedly, much as one who picks at a scab until it bleeds again and again…) – and so sleep became something he feared, and rarely had. The lack of sleep had a fairly severe effect on his health, and also further negatively influenced his mental state, and so his outlook became steadily worse – and so his health began to decline, and did so further because his extremely low mood meant that even when he had access to potential prey, he didn’t hunt as often as he should have – he simply didn’t feel like eating, and part of him had become so apathetic towards his own life that whilst he wouldn’t kill himself outright(he felt this was the easy option, and also he has some self-punishing tendencies – as evidenced by his torturing himself with his own guilt – and he actually stayed alive not out of a will to live, but because he felt that he should live through this, and that life itself would be his punishment), he may have been willing to let himself starve. Though indeed on a few occasions, he actually had difficulty finding prey – long story, but where he is exiled, he is also basically TRAPPED as well – the local residents tolerate him to a degree, since he has not done anything to harm them whilst there, and also because in the mountains, being Kårstatt, he has the advantage – if they tried to catch him and kill him, he’d only lead them on a wild goose chase and evade them relatively easily. And so they mostly ignore him, as it would be a waste of effort to go after him (not that it doesn’t youngsters from occasionally taunting him or throwing rocks at him etc.). However, if he were to leave his place of exile, and to cross onto more level ground on his way – they would DEFINITELY kill him. And so whilst he has no fence to keep him put, he is still trapped in a way – though it is still a very large area by most standards, to a Krovendrakk  even an area the size of England is still a cage.

And this only increases his frustration, but also means that unlike other Krovendraekk, if prey is scarce he can’t simply follow it – so a few times he has went far too long without food, and on one occasion he would have starved to death if Reivana had not intervened. But anyway, I too much – the combination of lack of sleep and under-eating (either intentionally or because of prey shortage) had a negative effect on his health indeed, and resulted not only in his mental state declining, but also his immune system – he was essentially immunosuppressed, and quite markedly so; which is where his hepatitis comes in. The virus responsible is not present in healthy Krovendraekk – it is essentially an opportunistic infection rather than a professional pathogen; it does not cause disease in or infect healthy hosts, as their immune system prevents it from becoming established. But in Adler’s situation, his immune system could not fight it off – and much like in humans with HIV and other animals with similar immunodeficiency diseases (though Adler’s state was more out of other reasons than a virus, but the effect on his immune system was comparable), he was vulnerable to infections that would not affect others, and so he acquired this form of hepatitis, and was rather ill indeed during seroconversion – and is now established as a chronic carrier, and will never be rid of it (and perhaps it may knock a few decades off his life span eventually). Whilst it generally doesn’t give him much trouble other than mild jaundice, it does serve to keep his immune system functioning a bit lower than average, so he’s more prone to acquiring infections than normal (since typically Krovens are pretty infection-resistant), though he does have days where his hepatitis is worse, during such times his sclerae will be VERY yellowed, he will be extremely lethargic and also have quite a lot of pain behind his ribs (and generally lies there looking rather sorry for himself).

And yes, you mentioned something similar with Stian before – I had noticed in his design that he appears quite lean and defined typically, but I can imagine that the stress during intensive periods of conflict could lead to some degree of weight loss, as stress often does – either through reduced appetite, or increased activity with decreased sleep – or a mixture of those things etc.. And I can imagine that this time in his life is best for him psychologically, since he has something else to focus on instead of devoting everything he has constantly to his obsession, and something which is a much more positive outlet for his energy, and indeed the love he would feel for his family could indeed make a significant difference to improving his mental health – and it makes sense that this in turn would improve his physical health. As for Adler, Reivana’s arrival does help him a great deal – whilst he doesn’t improve much physically, psychologically she pretty much saves him from total ruin, even if she didn’t realise the extent of it at first. He is still not in the greatest mental state, but at least he regains touch with reality and is able to function again unlike before. And even if it is a short period in Stian’s life where he doesn’t suffer so much, it is still good that he had at least some time which gave him a kind of relief for a while. <3

On the subject of Stian occasionally getting a bit too skinny – with Krovens, it’s actually rather hard to classify this aspect of them, for obvious reasons. As they don’t possess any adipose tissue and lack the ability to produce any adipose cells or any form of fat storage (you won’t find one single adipose cell anywhere in a Krovendrakk – instead for areas where cushioning is required etc., they have other tissues which are adapted to take this role – they have a form of modified areolar connective tissue in their eye sockets instead of periorbital fat, and in their paws they have a modified hyaline cartilage which is present beneath the weight-bearing joints and provides the necessary shock-absorption and cushioning – and so on and so forth :’D), Krovens are as lean as possible by that definition – 0% body fat for every member of the species. So they tend to fluctuate in weight a lot less than other creatures, so their physical health is assessed by other parameters instead generally – such as energy and demeanour, and fur quality (one of the purposes of their ornamental hair tufts on the joints and shoulders, and their manes etc. – these regions are the first to fall out in ill health since they are lost first because they’re not essential for insulation, so a Kroven with poorly-textured, thin, brittle or even missing ornamental fur is clearly in poor health).

It is actually VERY rare indeed for a Krovendrakk of any clan to be “underweight” – since in order for this to occur, it involves a loss not of adipose tissue but of muscle mass, which requires severe and prolonged malnutrition – very uncommon in a species which even in health eats rather infrequently and has no difficulty in catching prey. There is variation obviously enough between individuals in terms of muscle mass and definition etc., but all Krovendraekk of all clans do still have prominent bones (as you’ll know already from looking :’D). Generally speaking, all Krovens have prominent scapulae, elbows, ankles, wrists, and slightly visible knees – and every Krovendrakk must have clearly visible ribs (otherwise whatever someone has drawn isn’t a Kroven!).

However, the spine and the pelvis are typically not visible – the spinous processes are fairly short so as not to damage the skin above (with rapid flexion and extension during sprinting and quite dramatic movements, if their spinous processes were much longer they could generate quite a bit of friction under the skin, which wouldn’t end pleasantly…), since Krovens lack subcutaneous fat and have only connective tissue above the spinous processes, and the pelvis is also small and narrow, and serves very little purpose in supporting abdominal organs but is essentially just a limb girdle and point of muscle attachment. So their small and narrow pelvis is usually obscured by their musculature – the rough outline may be faintly seen, as the slight rise caused by the iliac crest, but the actual bone definition should not be visible here in healthy Krovendraekk – with the exception of Kårstatt, whose more dense muscles occupy a relatively lower volume and so lie flatter, and whose pelvises are also rather heavier and more robust and angular (their whole skeletons in general in terms of their joints and bony prominences). As for them, they’d look underweight by typical standards because their bone structure is excessively prominent and defined, and their pelvises are not just visible but stick out very prominently especially when seen in lateral view or caudal view – however, they do have quite heavy musculature around the neck and shoulders etc., so generally these regions give more of an idea of condition (which can be rather misleading elsewise in their clan, due to their rather different physiology). There’s a lot more to their biology in that regard, but I’ll leave it here for now before things get out of control. ^^

As far as Adler, he would be definitely a bit underweight – though he is naturally slightly finer than average for Kårstatt standards, with a slightly lighter bone structure and not naturally as muscular (though his skeleton still is angular and typical Kårstatt shape, just slightly less exaggerated joints than average, and very long-lined – though Reiker actually is probably even more long-lined again, but actually has slightly stronger joints than his great uncle). So he’s naturally a bit lighter than average, and not quite as strong – but even more so since his exile, and some evidence of this is his loss of acceleration; whilst he naturally didn’t quite have the talent for acceleration as some other members of his family have, since his physical health has declined this has become more marked, as he does not have the strength required to reach his top speed quickly, lacking that explosive burst of power necessary to gain momentum – he DOES still have a high top speed, but now takes quite some time to reach it, and indeed a few times has almost been caught by Krovens with a much lower top speed but better acceleration.)

Ha, yes, sometimes he is absent for a long time and then spams me again and invades my head like this – and hmm, I think I remember you saying so in a previous comment that Morten tends to do this. ^^ (some others of mine do this too, whereas most of them are there to some degree all the time.)

I can relate to how you feel about nature destruction as that is something I have been thinking about much lately. (I also consider writing a story that deals with it from some (mythical?) animals viewpoint.)
Great picture, so intense. Looking forward to the comic about Stian.

Thanks (srry for the late answer, I think that Your comment just got burried). That sounds like an interesting topic too. I want to show people the science behind it and the complexity of the problem. There are so many different opions involved and I want to make clear that it is not black and white. I don't want to portray humans as evil, but I want to make the reader understand the situations and thoughts of the characters (which also includes a human point of view character). It's going to be a HUGE project and I may not write it in comic form only. It will probably mainly be written with illustrations and only some scenes will be shown in comic-form.

ah I remember the preview for this one and it was so moving...and ture. Even the mighty still fall... poor Stian. Beautiful and haunting it really does have that endless feeling. You did great!

Yeah indeed - even though he's strong and keeps fighting, he also has his weaknesses. This inner struggle is a constant torture. Some characters like Noiro and Goran seem to handle traumas or generally stress better, but I think that Stian is actually rather sensitive to traumatic experiences and reacts with extreme aggression and is then often followed by nightmares. I discovered that he has a lot in common with Nintu as it comes to personality and stress-response as well.

I think that's another thing I love so much about Stian I guess at first glance from the outside with his 'poker face' he seems so cold and unemotional but it couldn't be harder from the truth, I think he must feel things so much deeper than some individuals...I'm not saying they are all good feelings though. It may also play into his violent nature because it's so furstrating to have an internal struggle and yet it's like you can't fight somethign that isn't there to see and touch...how do you fight such a thing??? So...that with his abuse only heightens his agression, it's got to come out somewhere.

Tragic, even more so that it represents a true problem and apathy of others.  But a magnificent if macabre work, I daresay.  I'm having difficulty, however, discerning if that's a chasm or a pool.  But perhaps it's better that way: unstable is the realm of dreams, ever changing in accordance with the thoughts of he who dwells there…

FelisGlacialis In reply to Biding [2015-08-15 10:29:30 +0000 UTC]

Yeah indeed. Stian represents a kinda real problem; he doesn't only represent some of my deepest frustrations (although a biiit more extreme), but he also represents the effects that the conflict between humans and large carnivores can have. And about the background - I vaguely saw something like a chasm, but it changed into just a black pit. And as it indeed is supposed to be scene of a dream; it is meant to be vague and unclear.

Thanks! Yeah in the first book about him (the one I'm writing now, in addition to ToM) will first show him as a kind of evil villain, but in the next book you get to know why he became like that.

Thanks!! Yeah even though I'm very happy in the place where I live now, but I still feel the same frustration as this character, sometimes. Having characters is a good way to express hidden parts of oneself.

I understand that completely. That must be so frustrating... That's the wonderful thing about having characters, you can express yourself in so many ways and sometimes it helps you learn more about yourself in the process.

That is an interesting coincidence here. On the other hand, with so many people on the world, it's not very surprising that someone already has drawn/done something similar. And yeah I just saw this picture in my head when I listened to the song, actually a few years ago already. The mental image kept sticking in my mind, and now I've finally drawn it ^^

indeed, and I agree. I usually say that it is really hard to come up with something original nowadays cause there are so many people creating things that some elements in your work will always have been done before XD
