Description
How to draw my fantasy feline species - the siderian- correctly...Based on the many mistakes I have seen in fan works and mistakes I did myself....It is also useful to draw typical cats and to learn the difference with dogs. This was a good exercise for me and I hope it will improve a lot of fanworks too.
You're allowed to draw your own siderian character, but please ALWAYS refer to me (my DA) and show me the result (I'm curious!!
Siderians are as tall as a horse (although weigh less). They look roughly like a hybrid between a tiger and Oriental cat (extreme type Siamese), with some influences of the Eurasian lynx, like the big paws.
With this video you get a good feeling about the siderian appearance www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&fea⦠(but keep in mind that Oriental cats have more gracile legs than cheeds).
Individual siderians vary largely in the % of tige, Oriental cat lynx represented in their anatomy, but all siderians have:
- the overall body shape, powerful frontlegs, large shoulderblades and narrow hind-legs and butt of a tiger.
- the head of either an Oriental cat, tiger or something in between (although the eyes are smaller than in cats and the head has more the pantherine 'heaviness'.
- the headlenght - shoulderheight - bodylenght proportions (but this approx. the same in Oriental cats as well) and huge paws of a Eurasian lynx (some have a slightly longer body or slightly shorter legs).
Some examples of siderians with various influences of the three felids:
*Tiger-biased
*Oriental cat-biased:
*Lynx-biased:

Thanks - oh I see this comment got a bit lost in the rest of the comments -sorry for the late reaction. the species is still developing a bit - as for the siderian related feline species. I will make similar sheets of these cats soon

It would be fun drawing them in anime style hehe Stian is very tempting to try to make fanart of I find, maybe I will give him a shot? (IΒ΄ve wanted to try and paint him for ages but IΒ΄m scared of failing)
I apploud you on how much research youΒ΄ve done for your species, itΒ΄s very realistic for being madeup. And the anatomy is amazingly blended, you are really skilled!Β

Thanks! Hehe yeah I know that problem of being afraid to fail....It would really be nice to see Stian in anime style!! I just recently corrected his charactersheet as well - so the many drawings of him are pretty up to date But hehe but just try - I appreciate any fanart (and will put it on tumbr
). Stian is btw a very tiger-biased siderian. He's rather heavy, tiger-like build (but a bit skinny) and has a siamese cat like head.

IΒ΄ll give it a shot I need to get my anime style skills back, and felines arenΒ΄t that common in anime, so itΒ΄ll be a bit of a challenge as heΒ΄s such a mixed breed
I wonder what background he should be surronded by, snow feels kinda..done you know?
IΒ΄ll take the tiger influence in consideration, itΒ΄s a great anatomy base to work from. When IΒ΄m done, IΒ΄ll link the finished art to you

I'm getting incredibly curious!! Yeah I can't really ermember an anime with felines. Yeah it's indeed a bit of a challenge - for Stian I basically use references of tigers but mix it a bit with the slenderness of Oriental/ modern siamese cats. However, the bodyshapes and appearance of Stian is very tiger-like.

nekonotaishou [2013-03-06 00:02:30 +0000 UTC]
Wouldn't they need a larger ribcage? If they're horse sized, wouldn't they at least need a set of lungs to match? I mean, horses have enormous lungs [link] because they are large animals. Tigers also have enormous lungs [link] because they have a lot of muscle that needs large quantities of air for cellular respiration. House cats not so much [link] but that's just because they're small and don't need as much air to move their bodies. Big cats in general have large ribcages [link]
Just sayin'
π: 0 β©: 1
FelisGlacialis In reply to nekonotaishou [2013-03-06 18:21:36 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for the suggestion! I checked it very quickly if lung-volume increases with bodysize and it seems according to this old paper [link] not the case - it seems to be linear. That means I can indeed take smaller animals as reference, thereby meaning much lighter build animals than tigers and lions. Cheederians are not that stocky and heavy but have more the bodybuild of an Oriental cat - like [link] or lynx, see this Canada lynx [link] (the fact that this is a skinny one clearly illustrates the minimal ribcage). i usually take the Eurasian lynx as example for the cheederians proportions [link] (if you want to see more nice pics of Eurasian lynx I recommend this [link] (with help of google translate becuaws its in norwegian) - most pics I find on internet are of fat captive lynx so I suggest the cameratrap website). But anyway to the point is that cheederians don't have the proportions of a tiger and are much lighter - and yes they have a relativly small chest, but I don't think it's too small if I compare it to lynx and Oriental cats and knowing that bodysize does not matter for chestsize. Anyway but it's good that you pointed it out and I appreciate it! It makes me think if I maybe made a mistake - which I have done a lot - and makes me paying extra attention to this aspect in following drawings especially becasue I indeed tend to draw ribcages sometimes too small

Nope- they came up in my mind. They are a part of me -kinda - so I don't design them at all. They live in my head - I hardly can control themXD. I just made this tutorial to help fans drawing them correctly. Because people make a lot of mistakes and draw them sometimes nearly like a dog, which bothers me.

FelisGlacialis In reply to The-Skykian-Archives [2012-11-03 16:24:28 +0000 UTC]
Yeah indeed- especially compared to canids who have a much more round, muscular body while felids have a narrow body with the heavy limbs. I'll submit some more photo's of my Oriental cats on my photoaccount ( to show the extreme narrowness. I had to get used to that the first time I saw an Oriental cat actually...but Eurasian lynxes and even tigers are also relatively narrow - and it was very difficult for me to draw this correctly ...

Sorry, I've just read that they are free-to-create.
Okay, but then I have one more question... I have two cat-rpg's on another site than here, am I allowed to use them as a special species in there? I would credit you in the application thread and the rpg thread itself. If this would be enough or you would wish more credit [I dunno] please tell me if I can use them.
Again: No commercial uses or any other stuff, just playing around with them.

ok so im like summing this up, their head is like a tiger, but with ears like a oriental cat. They have large paws like a lynx and are lean.
Also, they remind me of a snow leopard. It sounds weird but they do xD

FelisGlacialis In reply to DarkShadow-Stallion1 [2012-10-08 11:20:48 +0000 UTC]
Snow leopards?? maybe their fur? Anyway they have indeed a tiger-Oriental catlike head, but also the tiger-like back and bodyshape. Indeed the long limbs and huge paws of a lynx finally somebody who recognizes the right species in them

lol their fluffy ness reminded me of a snow leaopard and their paws sorta since snow leopards have farily large paws for living up in the mountains. and lol it actuallt wasnt even that hard to recognize, you basically spelled it out for us like a bunch in the tutorial ^-^

Yeps - that's right: because most people who wanted to draw a cheederian drew them much too canine and it seems that typical feline anatomy is difficult, especially for mainly canine orientated artists. So therefore I wanted to make clear how to draw cheeds with their typical feline anatomy

Have you seen the running animation of one of my main-characters already? I used a tiger as ref btw - and yeah I think gangster walk fits perfectly to the one I took as example hehe. Makes me wanting to make more animations (maybe once with Maya or something too - I saw you're studying animation?? 8D)
Anyway this sheet is the best I have till now - in the older ones I now see some bugs and that some cheeds look too much like cheetahs, while they must look like some kind of Oriental cat-tiger-lynx mix ^^.

Great work - a very helpful tutorial!
Haha, love some of your comments, and, I must say, Stian makes a very good model.
One of the commonest mistakes in my Krovens is that people draw their ribcages too broad and their backs too level - the front legs and back legs are at the same height, but the back arches in between. One thing people almost always forget is the gap between the radius and ulna!
π: 0 β©: 1
FelisGlacialis In reply to Vannjaren [2012-04-05 18:00:04 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! Yeah that's why I took him - he's the one with the most 'extreme' cheed featuers and often the opposite of what people usually draw...(Stian is often drawn most wrong compared to other cheeds...). Anyway yeah I see with yer Krovens - especially that gap is a feature that is important and I guess often forgotten because it's not 'normal' XD
