Description
This is VERY OUT OF DATE - but I keep it here for the sake of records. The species is now called SIDERIAN. See my newer posts - www.deviantart.com/felisglacia…
The standard of my gigantic fantasy feline, the cheederian (Metafelis lamnis )updated march 2012.
The cheederian is a horse-sized feline with the overall skeleton and shape of a tiger (especially the hindquarters) but the head length- body length - shoulder height- proportions of an Eurasian lynx. As for the long legs and large paws. The front legs are somewhat heavier than the frontlegs of a lynx and are more tigerlike. The head and elegance of a cheederian is also inspired by the Oriental cat, as for the fur. Many cheederians have the fur of an Oriental longhaired cat. Cats form the main inspiration source for the cheederians fur.
Cheederian individuals vary in the % influence of lynx, Oriental cat or tiger in their anatomy. Some have a very high tiger influence (Stian), while others are much more lynx like (Niver) or Oriental cat like (Rubi).
I have a lot of cheederian characters and I'm working on a graphic novel with these characters.

They are smaller now and I guess somewhat narrower than a rhino (I would rahter think about a horse than a rhino as it comes to the cheeds mass O.o). The biggest cat that ever lived was around 1.20 metres (sorry I only think in metres) - I think it was Machairodus gigantus and cheederians are now between 1.50-160 at the shoulder, so for a metaphysically influenced species it's not so extremely large anymore. Btw hyneas are feliform carnivores - but hyenadon was a creodont for as far as I remember XD

What determines the type? Genes or livestyle or geographical location?

FelisGlacialis In reply to nightgirl7 [2012-04-30 15:45:38 +0000 UTC]
Hehe you actually answered the question already - mainly lifestyle differences caused by different environments, which can in turn affect the genes slightly. However there exist no subspecies because cheederians move a lot.

Ooooo! When I come up to drawing me as a cheederian I'll take jumpers since it matches my body build and I myself am a very good jumper
, but a really bad runner.

Thanks! Cheeds are just a mix of my 3 favourite felids (Siamese, lynx, tiger) and having the most beautiful elements combined - of course with some random inspiration sources included (mainly for the fur )

haha yeah pretty unusual - most feline hybrids are pantherine hybrids (see how popular lions, tigers, leopards and snow leopards hare). But Siameses or lynxes I rarely see...But yeah I also use tigers...^^

^^ yeah, I have never seen someone mix a lynx with anything but I have seen a few siamese mixed creatures. The typical big cats are pretty popular here, tigers, lions, ect. It gets kind of old but this one you created is pretty unique.

Amazing work - love the powerful limbs of the jumpers, and I also adore the way your ref sheets often cover the species from several different angles so you can see what they look like from the front or from above - not a lot of artists do that, and I love how it shows your thinking and your skill.
The retractile claws look great too, and if possible, I'm now even more in love with Cheederians than before. <3

FelisGlacialis In reply to Vannjaren [2012-03-04 19:32:35 +0000 UTC]
Hehe that's really good to hear Well, otherwise people can get a wrong image of what a cheederian actually is...like their very narrow hindquarters and heavy forquarters and also the fact that they don't really have a narrow waist like cheetahs and dogs...so yeah just to avoid taht people also make wrong fanarts
And yeps the retractile claws makes me loving them much more too! Especially my fav chars look much more cuter with such claws

You're welcome, and yes, I've noticed those changes, and I like them.
And I agree - they do make them look cuter, I think.

I guess you can - you only need a loooot of time to study anatomy from books and real skeletons and muscles of animals in museums and such

Tryed to study the feline skull but everything on it was false I know its false but have no idea what is false on it....simply not shure on what should I work ore.....

FelisGlacialis In reply to ArtistNina [2012-03-05 18:50:35 +0000 UTC]
It helps to trace the first times or to measure the proportions so that you 'get the feeling' of the shape . But skulls are difficult due to the many details...it also helps to study what the function is of the different parts so that you know what you draw.

ArtistNina In reply to FelisGlacialis [2012-03-05 19:46:54 +0000 UTC]
yeah somehow are human skulls easyer than feline skulls.....hmmmm you mean to study each part separately ? I think that would help a lot hmmmm problem isI only have a picture of the whole skull ....Illl better google something ...I would show you my drawing of the skull but its too embarrasing .....

Maybe this site helps: [link] it's a wolf but the parts are clearly marked. Just search more on that website..also a looot of feline skulls. Good to compare several species.

FelisGlacialis In reply to RouKon13 [2012-01-21 20:23:45 +0000 UTC]
Just to study all the bones and muscles into detail...and know more about the biology behind the species you want to use. I also strongly advice to look at tutorials that make clear the differences between felines and canines. There are some on DA -not very good ones- but yeah some that can be useful. I'm thinking about making one too ^^

yes i have already looked at several and have done so before b/c oddly enough i'm one those weird people that loves looking at the anatomy of things lol. it's only the ones that people fall asleep in that i'm completely interested in. lol yay i actually even made the anatomy all out and everything but then my computer died and deleted everything DX so i was wondering if there was anything else that i should add when redoing it.

Thanks a lot! I'm now working on a little bit more detailed drawing of the skeleton - also measured and compared to Other felids - I want to introduce more pantherine influence in the cheederian and reduce the cheetah influence a bit more ^^

I'm a kinda bionerd.
