Description
I've made this pendant a while back - almost half a year ago - but had to give it a second paintjob because the original was already scraping off. No wonder, ever since it was made, I've been wearing it almost every day!Polymer clay and a small piece of real turquoise (that was an expensive little bitch)
(the truth is, the upper half of the pendant looked much better until a little accident happened 5 minutes before baking the clay - I didn't want to start the whole thing over anymore so I just fixed it quickly and tossed it in the already preheated oven...)
It's already much better than the first pendant I made though, I guess there is improvement? smithing increased to 51?
Interesting fact: since I started wearing this, people start coming up to me asking what it stands for... as if they somehow knew it had a symbolic significance. I just think that's slightly odd, I mean - "nice necklace, where did you get it?" is a quite ordinary thing to ask, "nice necklace, what does it symbolize?" is not really, and yet it literally keeps happening???
I have a hard time trying to explain my devotion towards the Way of the Voice to these people, so I just say it's just an ordinary pendant, found the pattern on the internet and made it for myself - if you knew, you would probably recognize it anyway, wouldn't you?
kyne with y'all mofos, and enjoy

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you liked, and thanks for the fav as well!
It did take me a couple of hours and a few tries to get it right, this is actually the second amulet that I have made, the first turned out a little bit wobbly and asymmetrical
I am quite proud of how this one turned out though

Good idea. I'd make a piece of Morrowind or Skyrim jewelry but it'd be tough to decide which; Moon-And-Star would be the obvious choice but I hate wearing rings, and though I like the Amulet of Mara I'd never be able to wear it anywhere that people might actually know what it was, in case someone got the wrong idea

I'd say, go for it! If someone notices your Amulet of Mara, you can still tell them you are "not interested".

I'm actually planning on trying to attempt this and personally this is one of the better ones I have seen. It's looks really good.
You wouldn't happen to have any tips you'd be willing to share would you?

Thank you very much for the kind words! I have to confess I am no pro but I sure can tell you how I made it, maybe that will help.
I think it's important that it was all made of one piece, I first formed the clay to shape, THEN added the gem, and afterwards carved the lines into it. I used tiny sculpting tools like this [link] which you have a lot of luck to find in shops that sell models and modelling tools. I already had some at hand but they are not necessary, you can use anything you find that is thicker than a needle and thinner than a match.
The top part where the leather goes in was shaped from a rectangle, I took a stick of some kind, maybe a pencil(don't clearly remember) rolled the rectangle up like a tube, shaped it accordingly and the stick was only removed when the clay was baked.
The clay was black and to paint it, I used acrylics and a bit of spray varnish on top. That's about all I can say right now but if you have something more specific on your mind just ask and I'll be glad to help.

Well at least you've got a social life
And this pendant looks great. The paint has a nice metallic effect It makes me want to make an amulet of Julianos (and to design one too...). If I were into witchcraft I'd go for Kynareth but let's keep quiet in priesthood.

Haha, yes, one shouldn't complain. My boyfriend loves painting models and he had these cool acrylic paints that I borrowed. If you make an amulet of Julianos, by any means let me know, I would love to see!
Thanks so much for the kind words

Oh, so it's model paints, that's great to know! It's true it must be great on polymere clay since it's a plastic material. Great idea
Seeing the design of the amulet of Julianos I think I would try to see if I could make it hollow, like a small container to put things inside, or incorporate book pages with prayers inside. I think it would be fitting. I'm gonna see what metal we have except zinc, lead and pewter in case there would be something more fitting. ...A lock woud be great. *muses*
And if the book part could turn it would allow to read or to let someone read easily...
Maybe I should become a designer

Since I had these paints at hand, they did a wonderful job, but in my opinion any acrylic paint does the job just as well, no need to invest in model paint. I also spray it with some varnish.
Wow, that sounds so amazing, very creative with the little book. You definitely should

noxfoxArts In reply to felrokker [2012-11-17 14:13:49 +0000 UTC]
Ah, varnish, I was thinking about it too.. I'll need to make some tests to see how zinc reacts to vinegar to change its color and if varnish could look nice on it. I've made several sketches [link] and I'd like to make the version that closes with a knot. I tied to find an ingenious way to both hold and close the amulet for I think it fits the concept of Julianos if the amulet is already made with cleverness.
I'm really a creative meant for design, story telling etc but I feel like there are so many things I could do and I don't know what to choose, I feel that I could do great but I don't see who would want to hire me when I'm just... me. All I do is having ideas, I think it sounds pretentious to say "I have good ideas and I can help you make your ideas better".
π: 0 β©: 1
felrokker In reply to noxfoxArts [2012-11-28 12:35:34 +0000 UTC]
Pretentious, maybe. Or maybe not. I firmly believe that there are some people born to spread ideas around, while others are born to help those ideas grow into something even better. To me, that's two types of creativity that are equally important and mutually enhance one another. I would say, if you find the creative power in yourself to do whatever, don't hesitate, go for it.
The amulet design looks great to me so far, have you made any progress since the sketches were drawn?

noxfoxArts In reply to felrokker [2012-11-28 18:41:42 +0000 UTC]
Maybe I just need to put more confidence in myself, yes. I'm confident in my skills but not enough in me, I must be lacking of survival instincts. I need to be more active.
I've made some tries but it appears that zinc can't be bulged, only folded, with a tendency to break if you unfold it to fold it in the opposite direction. I tried to do something with iron thread but the one I had was hard to shape. Currently I can't think of a metal I could easily mold save for err... plumb, but it wouldn't be healthy at all, damn heavy and not resistant. Thus I think I'll have to go for polymere clay, unless I find a nice piece of wood and a way to sculpt it.
