Description
Here's "Kagaku ninja tai Gatchaman" from 1972-1974. Though I knew it first as "Battle of the Planets" from 1978 on... Jog your memory here --> [link]Really loved this as a little kid. I even had two plastic Mark (Ken) boomerangs but my Mom threw them away because she thought they were too dangerous
I was lucky enough to see the original Japanese version 1st series (full uncut 105 episodes) on DVD in 2004. Got all the original Japanese character names down
Referenced using a Japanese Gatchaman episode compendium book (given by my bro [link] one Xmas, thanks
100% Photoshop (the original is 2x larger)

I used to watch that show when I was little it was on the Cartoon Network. I never really understood or liked it.

That's ok, I remember when it was on Cartoon Network (maybe I'm wrong though) it was heavily butchered. In the 70s, 'Battle of the Planets' was already a cut-down and edited version for violence (so the story changed), and they changed the character names, etc. Inside they also included animation snippets of a meaningless R2D2-copy robot and his robot dog to fill time. By the time they showed this series again (this is what I remember and maybe the version you saw), they changed the characters names again, to ridiculous ones, and they also included their own music, which one fan-site correctly described as being worse than Chinese water torture (it was just like meaningless rock instrumentals jamming continuously non-stop). It was absolutely unbearable to watch, so I understand.

nothing, I had seen a design in one of my books where Ryu's boots had the big-toe split off (kinda' like with the ninja boots) and decided to go with it... maybe for his big feet

Beautiful job on the coloring and the poses It's obvious how much you love the series just looking at this drawing, it just emanates: "w00t, I have luv for!”
I still have yet to see the original Japanese version of this series which sucks =/ and I agree the 1994 OVA was awesome artwise mostly in the coloring and the action scenes but...I dunno, I honestly like the look of the original 1970’s art.

Yes, the original 70's art is one of my favorite styles. To me it actually looks very "American," like the old American comicbook styles.

Yeah I agree with ya on that, it really does. BTW how did you get your hands on the original Japanese series? Can it be found on ebay or other such places and which DVD's do you recommend? (I honestly hate getting those typical bootlegs where they're subtitled in English by the Chinese and all this insane shit pops up just like my Macross and Macross 7 DVD's which sometimes disturb the hell out of me).

I actually was in Taiwan at the time, and purchased it in one of the many shops carrying animation dvd's (my brother actually found it for me). It looks like this:
on this page --> [link] , it's id is 0223, called "Gatchaman TV" Parts 1-3.
on this page --> [link] , scroll down, they call it "Gatchaman (Fuerza G)"
(btw, I don't buy from these sites, I don't know them or how good they are. I just found them on the web to help you i.d. the one I have).
It's confusing to me these days, because it seems everything animation from Japan is 'bootleg,' but I've heard people call some of them 'official bootleg.' I don't know. The translations were sometimes wacky, but not enough to bother me. (I haven't watched the Macross tv series in ages, but you're right, I think I remember some insane stuff come up, lol!) The usual stuff that bugs me is when the subtitles come out at the wrong times. In the case of Gatchaman, I remember the subtitles have all the guys with incorrect names. For instance, you'll hear Jun call Jinpei or Ken outloud, but the subtitles will write a different name. That's what I remember .

Thank you so much for those links, I just bought the first collection of Gatchaman as well as the first collection for Dragon Ball Z. I can't believe how many DVD's they have on that first site you gave, wowz

lol like I said, I don't know how good the shop is, hope you get what you want. If the shop is good, let me know, and maybe I'll buy from them in the future

I think I've bought from them before actually, but the website was much different the last time I visited and they didn't offer quite as much. I know I bought my Macross and Macross 7 DVD's from this site years ago. But yeah I'll let ya know.

Rock on! As always, I love the attention to detail and the professionalistic quality.
Did the girl always have that much skin?
I remember I was always fascinated by their glass faceshields and how they were different. Was owl's blue?
Haha and I remember I liked Eagle cuz he was the only one that had a gun, lol.

thankyou, I try to aim for attention to detail, but the professional quality... I don't know if I'm there yet
Yes, "Princess" (Jun) showed that much. In fact, a lot of her shots she's showing her undies (skirt too short and she's always flipping around and kicking ). The compendium book you gave me even devoted a page to her upskirt shots, haha
Yes, the Owl ("Tiny" or Ryu), his faceshield was a light purple-ish blue. At times, it appeared to have just a gray shaded look, maybe like lightly-tinted car windows. The others were pretty consistent. "Keyop" (Jinpei), some artists gave him a sky blue visor. I did the faceshields last, and had the most fun doing those .
Actually, "Mark" (Ken) is the Eagle with the boomerang. Jo ("Jason") is a Condor. His color scheme is pretty nice. While drawing these, the old memories came back, and when I see Jason, I think of AC, and when I see Keyop I think of you, haha! As a kid my fav. character was Mark, but after watching the series in Japanese, I love 'em all, but maybe a slight edge going to Jinpei . He's so funny!

On Princess: LOL Yeah having panty shots is soooo sleazy but it's such a go-to-move (so to speak) for so many artists. If you're down 1 with 5 seconds to go, you draw a panty shot and you win the game!
On Owl: Ahh so he had a gun, I probably missed those episodes.
On Condor: Ahh so he was a Condor, ic. Yeah Condor reminds me of Aric, but I secretly liked him. I know I was supposed to kinda be Keyop, but I never really liked him or Owl cuz they were too dorky looking, hehe.

lol on a panty shot winning the game!
Ryu probably showed the gun in two episodes. If you turn your head you miss it. Joe, on the other hand, he even had an obsession to hit the missile-fire button on their Phoenix ship; anything that went wrong, he went straight for the missile button! so funny
understand

Oh, I forgot to mention, Tiny used a suction-cup cable gun in one episode; I can't remember clearly but I think he pulled out a gun in another episode. But he's the other armed with one, though he's usually just smashing through people
