Description Illustration of the last seconds of LOT Ilyushin Il-62M SP-LBG before the crash.

It happened on 9th May 1987 and it's the deadliest plane crash with Il-62 and in Poland (183 fatalities.) 30 years ago this year.
The plane was scheduled to fly to USA from Warsaw, but shortly after takeoff one of the engines exploded, and even after that, the second engine exploded. The plane couldn't be controlled and it crashed in Kabaty Woods, not very far from the airport.

The last words of pilots were "Dobranoc, do widzenia! Cześć, giniemy" ("Goodnight, goodbye! Bye, we're dying!") It's haunting.

In 1980 another LOT Ilyushin crashed.

My parents told me that they remember hearing about it, they were even younger than me now.

And I have a paper model of LOT Il-62M. I'm looking for Tu-154M model, it crashed in 2010.

Have read about this in Wikipedia several times already. This just reminds me of how unsafe the Ilyushin Il-62s were. And well, here, it goes down to the unreliable Soloviev D-30KU engines. Same goes to the earlier SP-LAA in 1980 (although it was equipped with Kuznetsov NK-8s, which were also unreliable). Uncontained #2 engine failure led to in-flight fire and loss of control due to the all cable-operated Il-62 control surfaces being either burnt out or severed by the uncontained engine failure. There were also reports from SP-LBG that some passengers were thrown out of the plane while the plane was ablaze because of the cabin floor being burnt off. It's just so sad seeing these people die because of faulty design on an airplane that was supposed to fly people from one place to another safely.

This is one powerful tribute to those 183 lives that were lost back in '87. Those burning D-30KU engines are nothing compared to the severe fire it caused inside the cabin and eventually the loss of control that led to the crash itself, also the struggle for the brave pilots to save the plane with all 183 lives on it. It's just sad that despite their best efforts it's just worthless knowing the severity of the fire it had.

All of that is so true... But let's face the truth, Soviet planes weren't the best in the world. Of course they made air travel popular in Eastern bloc during the Cold War to almost 90s, but somewhen in 70s I think, Aeroflot, containing only Soviet planes, made a frightening record in deaths by air travel.

Sound of those faulty engines sure would have been amazing to hear today... Good thing they were replaced by 767s in 1989, and now, by the Dreamliners.

Aside the belly landing of 2011 Boeings haven't had any accidents in LOT! ^^

This is one of the reasons why I don't like flying in airplanes and why I want to stay in the United States for the rest of my life!

Like SammfeatBlueheart said, well almost, impressive drawing but sad picture to see.

I also was reminded of the Pan Am that crashed in 1989. And lots of times in plane crashes, there are no survivors. And after September 11th, and one more crash that happened not much later, I totally distrusted airplanes, although I went on one in December that year and another one two weeks later coming back and all was okay!

Even though this crash was horrific, I'd like to fly someday. Not even an intercontinental flight, even a short domestic one would be perfect.

But, let's notice, LOT hasn't had any fatal crashes since removal of old Soviet planes from its fleet. Yeah, communist times in Europe. Good for me I was born years after fall of communism!

Out of all I wouldn't trust Il-62s, looks like they were unlucky. Good thing our long-hauls are operated by 787s now!

Sometimes, plane crashes always destroy my dream to ride or pilot aircrafts.

Sad but wonderful drawing^v^

Oh, yes. I've never flown on an airplane, but I really want to fly. And even though planes are considered the safest transport in the world, hearing about crashes discourages me from taking a flight.

By the way, thanks a LOT

Hehe, I agree to you. Sometimes, most accidents happening are where we thought "is always safe".

And yeah, I see what you did there >v< No problems

Even riding a bike isn't 100% safe, and, according to statistics, it's more likely to be killed by a plane hitting your house than dying in a plane crash.

It's somewhat ridiculous, isn't it?

Yeah, kinda scary. That does mean that every thing in this world we don't know, is very dangerous. >v<

Nothing isn't 100% safe, and it will never be, so we always need to be careful
