Try looking up any tutorials by "Dermot O'Connor" - he's an awesome Flash Puppet Animator and he's made a crap load of video tutorials.
But the way to animate puppets in flash is very similar to animating 3D models in Maya or other 3D software. You go body part by part and slowly get the entire thing animated that way (animate the head for the whole shot, then animate the torso for the whole shot, etc.) - rather than drawing one full drawing and going to the next like one does for traditional animation.

Hi Flamingo1986 ... I have to say that this entire project is awesome, and I can't wait to see the final product
I'm pretty new on flash so I can't figure out how to use the RD or Twilight's puppet to do my first test animation. So (if you don't mind) could you give me some advices of how to use it, or some theme that I could investigate about flash and these puppets? I can obtain Flash CS5, but the problem is that I'm a beginner with this :S
My plans are: First know how to work with puppets in flash, then create my first animation with them, and with more practice make my own puppet for my OC Night Thunder... Also I will be very happy if you can give me some feedback about my vectors
I wish you the best!! Good Luck!!

Impressive! You really have to admire the dedication animators put into their projects. Can't wait for the finished product, or even the next animatic!
One problem though: I went to download the Dash puppet from the site and instead if gave me a page of code. The same thing happened when I tried it with twilight's. is there a specific method to downloading them or am I just missing a program to do so?

Thanks! And yeah - trying to download them while using the firefox browser doesn't work - you either have to right-click and select "save link as" to download it - or open it using a different browser like Google Chrome or Internet Explorer.

Why didnt you put the puppet pieces on flash 8 like everyone uses? :c

FlamingoRich In reply to CaseyandZack [2012-05-25 01:41:12 +0000 UTC]
Because we're primarily using the Flash that is installed in SCAD's computers - which is CS5.5 - so the earliest version we can save it out as is CS4.0

Those ''psycho smiles'' from Lesson Zero at 50-53 sure go against subtlety, but I can't help but wonder where exactly are you gonna use them for this? The wind, blowing hard in their faces? Them turning evil and laughing maniacally?(nah)
And I really like that transparency effect at the 07 wing, it gives a more natural feel when she flaps her wings.
Btw are you gonna add more transparency to each frame/wing build, even more than in Season 1 ?
Like...how many tricks are there for making animation more smooth & natural(or mainly good looking) ?
I know there's one where you are able to stretch a character, when it usually has to perform a zip line, to go off the screen.

FlamingoRich In reply to LolZorzs [2012-05-24 00:14:29 +0000 UTC]
Well - for one thing, the "psycho smiles" are actually normal faces that are being blown by a severe wind - and will be used during Rainbow Dash's more intense flying scenes. And no - we're not going to add more transparency to the wing flaps. One is good enough.
Most tricks revolving around making animation smooth and natural revolve around the Twelve Fundamentals of Animation. Google it and see - it's very interesting stuff!

Unfortunately no - the only other pony of the mane 6 that'll be made (fully) is Pinkie Pie.

Any chance of one or more of the Cutie-Mark Crusaders being made, fully or otherwise? Partially, I suppose.

We've actually just changed it to where we will be making the rest of the mane six puppets. And Scootaloo will be made as well.

I have a request. As a Flash animator who never upgraded from CS4, I cannot open these. Could you save as a legacy format and provide another link for those of us who can't afford to upgrade Adobe suites every time?
In any case, this project is amazing, and I wish you the best of luck. I eagerly await the results.

If you'd like a copy of the puppet in CS4 format, just toss a request to DoubleRainboomQuestions@gmail.com and it'll be sent to you.

This looks fantastic Zach! c:
All that work is paying off on these puppets, i'm sure people will have a blast playing with these.
One tiny little thing I noticed though is that on the profile view of her mouths, the bottom four
mouths still have Twilight's nose color on them.
Other then that this is just amazing <3
