Do you use a black for shadows or do you use a pallate?

I honestly don't remember what I did back in the time I made this tutorial, but nowadays I usually use purples and blues for shadows.

This is very interesting. The way you shade is similar yet different compared to how I do it, especially the use of hard edged brushes scares me, lol, I always use soft edged ones otherwise it looks ugly, but your results don't look like that at all! I think I'll try it your way, see what happens. Also...that brush uses pressure for opacity?? All this time I wished for a feature like that, and I had it all along!! *headdesk* Thanks for pointing that out in your tutorial, I can't wait to try it!

I used to be scared of it too But I'm now going even more to hard-edged and I like the way it looks, so I'd suggest, just try
And yep, there is such a brush, *Losmios pointed it out in her tutorial (which is where I got it from)

I fully intended to try something with the hard edged brush but chickened out and went for the soft brush after all. I do still want to try though because now that I pay attention to it I see that more people do this, and it does look promising.
I did use the brush that uses pressure for the opacity though and wow! It takes some serious getting used to, but I'm seeing possibilities here! Fun ^_^

i just have one question... i have a wacom instuos3 tablet that's supposed to have pressure sensitivity, but even when i check the box to have tablet pressure control opacity, it doesn't do a thing. it's like working with a mouse, honestly... do you know how i might fix that? i have adobe photoshop elements 8.0, if that's any help. thanks for your time =]

Uhm, I don't have a wacom myself (I have Trust), but maybe in the controls of the tablet itself can you put a setting differently?
Seriously though, I dunno... sorry

Thank you! Though it's only as smooth as you make it
Hope it helps anyways!
(btw; the smooth-comment I just made will make more sense should I ever do a wolf-shading tutorial)

Ha ha, yes, that would make more sense with wolves, horses rarely have shaggy coats!...Though that could be kind of cool...

You only shade with black and white? I need to try this. I have my shading methode now but it take so long and it's really bad for horse with many colors or weird markings like Sarge. I hope this helps me out and save a lot of time

FlareAndIcicle In reply to SilmesDragonStable [2009-12-21 18:21:39 +0000 UTC]
Well, usually not true black and white, but some colour in it, but yeah You shade every colour independently? If you do, I admire your patience!

What do you mean better than you thought though? My previous one wasn't that bad, was it?

silversiryn In reply to FlareAndIcicle [2009-12-21 18:51:45 +0000 UTC]
No, but I've read so many shading tuts that I was expecting something generic, like a lot of them. This wasn't though!
