Description Somewhere, two snowflakes are screaming.

.....or it's acupuncture for snowflakes... however you choose to look at it

Ok, really, it's the process of making crocheted snowflakes. After being crocheted, they soaked in undiluted starch overnight (mmm... crunchy), and then I pinned them into shape so they'd stay that way when they dried.

see if my great-grandmother had used starch instead of sugar then i wouldn't have gotten into all of hers when nobody was looking and chewed them all soft again

totally forgotten about that moment until i saw these haha...

lmao! That's hilarious! ...though I'm sure I would've done the same thing

I never thought about using sugar. That would probably make them sparkle more, too (which, of course, would make them more attractive to a hungry observer )

Oy, it's been so long since I crocheted anything... I think the last thing I made was a fish...
Do you have a time limit on how quick you have to be when it comes to staking these things? As in, does the starch begin to harden as you work?

I didn't know you crocheted as well. I can't believe how many talents you have!

First of all: "Staking"? I love it! Excellent description of the process. I like you're term better than "pinning"

Now to answer your question: They take a few hours or overnight to dry completely, so hardening generally isn't an issue. They're actually easier to work with after they've been out of the starch for a few minutes because then they're not as sticky. Great question! I'm currently putting together a tutorial on this process and I'll be sure to note that. Thanks

Haven't crocheted for years. I should try it again sometime.

It's nice having a bit of leeway for glueing and similar things. I'm used to having all of ten to fifteen seconds to work and having to get it right the first time. Woodwind instrument repair is a bit unkind in that way.

I love saxophone octave key mechanisms for that. There's an almost endless variation and it's interesting to see how different makes and models tackle the same problem.

I'd agree that you should try crocheting again, but I'm a bit biased

Woodwind instrument repair may be extremely time-sensitive for fixes, but I have to say it sounds absolutely fascinating! I played flute and though the only repair I'd ever do was the occasion tightening of a screw, I loved to examine it and try to figure out what keys affected what, etc. They're such beautifully complex things.

Hahaha that's awesome! Pretty snowflakes!! I bet they're nicer when they're crocheted ratehr than cut out of paper.

I don't know about nicer, but the crocheted ones are definitely easier for me to make. I have so much trouble picturing what a paper snowflake will look like when finished, that I usually have no idea where to start.

flutterbyfae In reply to OpheliasNightmare [2007-09-26 22:23:16 +0000 UTC]

I never could decide if knit or crochet was harder to learn. My grandma insisted on teaching me how to knit first, but when I tried to teach a few friends of mine both they said crochet was easier. I guess it was hard for them to manage two needles and so many stitches at once, but if knit is what you learn first, then maybe it's hard to get used to doing everything with one hand for crochet

OpheliasNightmare In reply to flutterbyfae [2007-09-27 05:01:29 +0000 UTC]

Mostly I could never figure out where to put the hook for the next stitch once I'd gotten the chain done. I'll admit knitting helped me figure out how to undo knots better, but I still can't figure out how to make one! (I can crochet a straight edging but that's it.)

The second illustration on the page shows where you can insert the hook. For most projects, you'll do what they're doing in the middle: going under both loops. Just going under the front or just going under the back loop works as well, but creates a ridge you might not always want.

I found a bunch of crochet sites to look that up. I'm going to narrow them down to a couple good ones and suggest them to ~dAKnitters

Hope that helps

Glad to hear it!
I had an awesome roommate in college who put up with this and other crazy schemes of mine. Snowflake voodoo was the first explanation that came to mind as she walked in one day and asked me what on earth I was doing when she found me in the middle of the floor sticking straight pins in cardboard boxes all over the room and a Ziploc bag full of starch and thread sitting on the bathroom counter

Thanks again, hun!
My roommate (who for some unknown reason continues to choose to dorm with me and my crafts) was kind enough to deal with snowflakes soaking in bags on the bathroom counter and drying on boxes around the room, so I figured I owed her some sort of explanation. Voodoo was just the first one that came to mind. Acupuncture seems a bit nicer, but doesn't invite the question, "what is the sound of a snowflake screaming?"
