Description This is Silas, my rescued coyote skin rug.

It's a bit of a story if you're willing to listen. We have a thrift store near our house that is a "thrift & antique" store so they usually have some pretty interesting/ancient furniture and stuff in there. They also regularly have some sort of taxidermy pieces, though they are rarely in very good condition and whether they are in good condition or not, the taxidermy along with all the other antique stuff is more often then not, incredibly overpriced, especially for it being in the condition it's in.

Anyway, the first time I saw Silas, I was drawn to him because of his beautiful coloration and because his face looked quite decent compared to a lot of the coyote taxidermy I've seen. He was also so very, very soft. When I saw his $450 price tag, I completely wrote off the idea of ever owning him. To make matters worse, he's an older piece and his skin under all the fur had become all dried out and brittle, leaving him literally falling apart. Someone had tried to fix him with some kind of cheap glue and extra fabric at one point but the areas where they had done this were falling apart even worse. I could not imagine anyone would hand over $450 for something in his condition so I expected to see him there for some time to come.

Sure enough, every time I visited that store, I'd seek him out and stroke his head and fuss over his poor body that was becoming more and more worn and tattered each time I saw him. Finally, one of the times I visited, his price tag was no longer present. Being the optimist that I am, I decided to try for a bargain. I inquired as to his price and was told he was on sale and the price was only $100 now. Still too much, I thought for something that I might be unable to fix. I wanted him for $75 so I told them that he was in such bad condition and I would only take him for $50. They did exactly what I wanted and said, "Well, we can't let him go for that low but you can have him for $75." Bingo.

I gathered him up, collected the bits of him that were lying around the glass case that they had dumped him in, and took home my old/new coyote. I was really worried at first that I had just wasted $75 and I wouldn't be able to restore him but I contacted *Zhon and she gave me all the information I needed to fix him myself. He's now the centerpiece on my bedroom floor and I love him dearly.

I had a little trouble naming him. My favorite way of naming things is to let them "name themselves". Meaning, I look at them for awhile and the first name that surfaces in my mind is what they should be called. Usually, when this happens, it's very easy and the name just kind of "manifests", but Silas was different because I "misheard it" the first few times I tried this. I'd stare at him and I knew the perfect name was right in front of me but all I could get was "Cyrus" which sounds nice but after calling him by that for a little while, I knew I had gotten it wrong. Eventually, the name Silas came through and I knew that that was the name that had been eluding me for so long. So Silas it is.

Disclaimer: I did not kill this animal and disagree with the killing of animals for sport or fashion. If you do not like what you see, don't look at it! Also, don't bother wasting your time leaving rude or pointless comments here, they will be ignored.

Well, they do have to get hunted, since they breed like rabbits and attack pets and livestocks. :/

I approve that you didn't buy this in any way that'd support the fur trade! Nevertheless, this isn't photogrpahy - do you mind changing the category?

it is a photography. Photo = photography. Wathever u mean this have perspective even if u dont like it. By the other hand obviously u dont like it and dont want to see it in the photography tag.

You clearly don't know what I "obviously" mean. What I mean is that this is a photo of taxidermy. The ART is taxidermy. The photo is just the vehicle for presenting it.

Poor thing, the only way id make an animal rug, is if it was naturaly dead. This is murder!!!

Coyotes have to get hunted. There are way too many, and they often kill pets such as cats or small dogs.

coyotes aren't afraid of humans, and quite frankly, even if you WERE there with your pet a coyote wouldn't have a problem ripping it to shreds. coyotes have to be hunted or else they go through a harsh starvation due to becoming overpopulated and oftentimes entire packs or groups [while coyotes often travel alone] have to be wiped out if contact with humans occurs. why not use the animal that died for something such as a rug, rather than letting it go to waste? also, how is it immoral to kill and use a coyote but fine to kill a cow, pig, or chicken for something such as meat?
honestly, i get that you want people to conform to YOUR morals but commenting on things that you can obviously just ignore and attacking other peoples' personal morals and opinions by screaming things like 'THIS IS MURDER!' is really only going to change anyone's' opinions of YOU, sorry.

Even though I hate when people kill animals to use them for "carpets" , If I found it naturally dead or found it in a store, I would be drawn to it too.

I believe this was found naturally dead, as for most taxidermy pieces.

I guess. I both like and dislike the fact that his head was mounted and has shape to it. It's really pretty and I like seeing his face like that but the problem with this is that he can't live on my bed or in the pile with my other pelts that are kept off the ground.

What a gorgeous animal. I'm actually thinking about taxidermy as a career, I'd love to create something as gorgeous as him. What a great find and an inspiring story. Now I feel like I should name my bat.

Radequdais In reply to FossilFeather [2010-01-28 17:23:00 +0000 UTC]

I do, he's preserved in a mirrored shadowbox and I love him. He's an Indonesian fruit bat measuring about 6 inches from wing tip to wing tip. I got him at a pet expo, there was a man with around a hundred gorgeous framed insects, butterflies, lizards, bats, etc.

The website is www.insect-creations.com, however I suggest that you shoot him an email or a call, as the website is bare minimum. Or, if you live around Pennsylvania, stop in the shop! ^-^ It's amazing.

I have to say, Silas has indeed came a long way! I think he's very happy to be in your care, and shows his love roughly by biting or nipping you when you walk by. c: And I can't help but wonder if he secretly likes the attention he gets when Kruger curls up and sleeps on him. 8D
And he is simply beautiful; I can't imagine why the storekeeper would let him stay in such conditions!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FossilFeather In reply to WolvesWithin [2009-08-13 22:13:22 +0000 UTC]

Lol, aww...thanks!

Yeah, I was pretty appalled how bad they'd let him get during his stay at the store. There was a black bear rug there too and that poor guy was in even more terrible condition than Silas. His fur had some sort of light stickiness to it as well that made it wholly unpleasant to touch. I didn't see him last time I was there and I hope that someone ended up rescuing him too.

He is beautiful~ Though I really hated the idea of taxidermy at first, the way that you're going about it is amazing and inspiring <3 Maybe one day I'll save some poor creature's pelt from a store, hehe x3

I really love the story that you told about Silas~ I really love the fact that you gave him a name too! It gives him a spark of life I think...gives him a greater purpose than that of a rug~ He does look extremely soft too .3.

Thank you very much! I'm really happy to have been able to help show some of the beauty of taxidermy. That's really a lot of the purpose of this account so that comment means a lot to me.

Yeah, Silas is a fun guy to have around. Since he's right in the middle of my bedroom and his mounted head makes him not all the way flat, sometimes I or one of my family members will trip over him. And since he's got an open mouth with a bunch of sharp teeth, it really hurts sometimes. After I catch my foot in his jaws, I usually yelp his name then bend over to straighten him out again.

Ouch D; I would hate to er, get "bit" by him too x3 but you're so sweet hehe, even after he bites you, you straighten him out xD

FossilFeather In reply to Kisharu [2009-08-04 16:25:18 +0000 UTC]

It is simple. People can be kind of aggravating sometimes...

I've actually discovered that many talented animal artists from the 1960s were taxidermists in their younger years, which explains their excellent understanding of animal anatomy and expression as well as their accurate coloring of the animals markings and patterns.

Yes...yes they can D;

Really? That's such an interesting fact to know!
Maybe I should go out and find more...museums with taxidermy specimens to draw from >3 I mean, it does make sense to draw something not moving that still looks...live? >>; Though I don't think I could ever go through with the whole taxidermy process myself; I'd cry or something else sensitive-like xD I mean, I appreciate the beauty and art of taxidermy (when it turns out good) but doing it myself...well, I'm too much of a weener to go through with it D;

He's sort of like a carpet but I try not to walk on him very much, firstly because I do not want to damage him further and secondly because it feels disrespectful to walk on him. x_x. My dog Kruger however, does not care and walks all over him and sometimes even sleeps on him.
