Description This is the coyote that was found as roadkill a couple nights ago. She has nice, thick winter fur and, since this is the largest animal I have yet skinned, she took five hours to skin out completely.

First picture is me and my friend after having only gotten one leg done!

Second picture is the fully skinned pelt of the coyote. I love her colors and thick fur.

Disclaimer: I did not kill this animal! It was found already dead on the side of the road where it would have simply rotted away to nothing. If you do not like what you see, don't look at it! Also, don't bother wasting your time leaving rude or pointless comments here, they will be ignored.

I know this is a very old post but I can't help to comment on how GORGEOUS that coyote is. I hope she tanned up well, also nice to know I'm not the only one who takes forever on a coyote! I can average about 5 hours also on one. She looked amazing for a roadkill coyote. You honored this life very well!

wow! that looks cool! and you guys did a awesome job! and ya, when an animal is hit by a car and left as road kill its fine for certain people that say do taxidermy or ect. to take it. its actually quite dangerous for roadkill to be left by the road, even in its to the side because the carcass will attract other animals, which it turn, might end u as roadkill as well.

shes beautiful ^^Im glad u got to her before she rotted! Its really cool to see all of the muscles and sinews in her leg too,Β they have theirΒ own beauty (or maybe that's just me being strange, could be either one)

She is very beautiful. Lucky that she was found instead of rotting away. Unfortunate death though :c

This is pretty fascinating and cool. Though i have two questions.
1.) Does it smell??
2.) How do you go about tanning it? And will a home-done tan ever rot or does it become "safe" and "clean" the way we view conventional leather. (such as the leather you would buy on a belt at a store)

SkyWolf33 In reply to Malibu-Maws [2013-03-07 08:30:50 +0000 UTC]

It really didnt smell, not like it was rotting or anything. Btw I was the other person in the picture.

And she does a long-ish process of drying it, pickling it, and cleaning it in order for it to be "safe" and "clean". This sort of tanning doesnt make it super thick and tough like your conventional leather made out of cow hide, so it is more soft to the touch but reasonably durable

You are welcome! And I understand completely! It isnt very often you see an actual musculoskeletal of a large canine, so its only natural to ask something

lol, hahah, its also not every saturday morning you get a call from a friend saying hey! you wanna skin a coyote with me today! X)

True! and im sure curiosity is the better of most reactions people get. x3

And thats so funny xD i dont even know how i would react!

And yeah, im just trying to learn more about how stuff like this is made xD im new to the taxidermy/fur collecting world. Ive only got two tails at the moment and a red fox mount due next month xD

I have been looking for a roadkill to pick up lately, and my sister has almost totally banned my pelts from the house... She won't let me bring in hides to salt them or rehydrate them. She thinks the skinning process is going to be disgusting and bloody, but, in truth, it isn't as bloody as you would think... It just looks like raw chicken, unless you cut a vein.

Muscles and bone are an amazing thing. And to see them with the fur freshly removed is very interesting. The only animal I've ever skinned was a cat for my anatomy class. Of course, the thing had died of old age years ago and was filled with preservatives and dyes, so it wasn't as pretty as the coyote here, hehe. Such a lovely pelt on her too.

I'm babbling. Anyway, excellent work you two!

well... At first i was like "Omigod sick bastard! This is an asrt some fascination over dead animals! Sicko!"
But thenn i saw that it was already dead and that clear the things up In my opinion there should be more people like u that make use of car-hit animals so they dont waste instead of hunting them only for pelts :/
Although is that viev of "skinning proces" so artistic and awesome to share it on your gallery?
ps. sorry for my english, not native speaker/writter (even more XD )

you did an amazing job with this and KUDOS to your friend for helping you with this process. I think I'd have to do a few in order to uh.... get used to the smell and being able to finish a pelt of any kind Oo. I just have a wing that I did and that ws hard enough!

I NEVER wipe my feet on my pelts. They don't even live on the floor and are treated with much more respect than you assume. Also, this animal was found already dead on the road. She was just going to lie there and rot anyway.

I read a bunch of tutorials and just find it easy. It'd be a lot easier though if I had a quality knife!

WolvenNightmare666 [2011-11-04 04:16:04 +0000 UTC]

I can skin i deer in about 15 minutes, once you get a technique down its super easy and fast but it also helps if your knives are sharpened before. First time i ever skinned something my sister gave me a dull blade took forever >_<

KiwiSeahorse [2011-09-29 02:58:27 +0000 UTC]

i always thought when you skinned an animal there was blood all over, is it normally as clean as this?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FossilFeather In reply to KiwiSeahorse [2011-10-04 21:26:37 +0000 UTC]

As long as you're neat and tidy about the skinning process, yes, it can be done with very little blood.

this is really fasinateing in my eyes,to find a coyote that isnt all torn and smashed and bloody at the side of the road is pretty rare.youre very lucky in my eyes i see torn up road kill on the road every time i go out to the store.
what did you do with the body after you skinned her?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FossilFeather In reply to Nostalgic-Memorie [2011-10-04 21:37:22 +0000 UTC]

I put it under a big wooden box so nature could clean the flesh off for me. Once that was done, I collected the bones and after cleaning them, added them to my collection.

you know this is a coyote not a wolf and it say it was road kill meaning it got hit by a car not a bullet, better to make use of the animal than have it rotted away on the street.

I find it to be fairly straight-forward. It'd be a lot easier though if I actually had a decent skinning knife.

darkcoyoteart In reply to Tsukiyami-Foxclaw [2011-05-17 16:14:14 +0000 UTC]

It's a bit weird at first, but not too hard on mammals. Birds are trickier because they have very thin skin that tears easy and they are sticky so your fingers tend to stick and pull feathers out. D: I've only once skinned a bird halfway decent.
