Description
A close up of my new baby Mallard, Jefferey. He's so soft and cute, I expect him to start peeping at any moment.I will be buying a glass dome and base for him to protect him from dust and bugs.
He died of natural causes back in 2006 and has been freeze dried for preservation.
Duckling from *Zhon

AWEEEEEEEEEEEE he's so gorgeous!!
So he wasn't skinned and mounted over a form then?

Nope, no mounting involved. This freeze drying thing is pretty interesting. I had no idea what it was all about until I researched it a little online. Freeze drying has become the preferred method of preserving people's pets is seems.

....So all his little organs and stuff are still in there? Is that sanitary? *looks a little freaked*

Yep, everything is intact except for his eyes which are glass. And I guess it is sanitary since people frequently have their pets freezedried then set them around their home. I little odd if you ask me...

Incredibly odd. That must mean the pet would weigh the same it was when it died.... But on the other hand, it'd be in a way better to freeze dry them, as a taxidermist who didn't know your pet wouldn't be able to capture it's personality

They're actually really light after the moisture is removed and yes, it's a far better alternative for pets.

So they remove the moisture.... wouldn't that make the animal sort of..... shrivel up? What has you learned about this freeze drying so far?

I read what Wikipedia had to say. And supposedly, the method of freezedrying is done in a way to keep the thing from shrinking. It's kind of really cool and I wish I knew someone personally that could freezedry things for me for free or at a discounted price.

The article also says its preserves flavours, smells and nutrition. So your duckling smells like duckling, and tastes like duckling?

I haven't tried tasting him. Maybe I'll give him a tentative sniff next time I'm around him and think of it though.

What a gorgeous dear little quacker! I think this justifies ethical taxidermy to the full, what a splendid little duckling...
(maybe this onslaught of sentimentalisation is because I just finished watching the Pianist.... )

Thank you!! He is indeed a perfect justification of that and I am thrilled to have him.

He was $40 USD but I'm not sure how that would compare since I've never seen one of these guys for sale before. I just knew I really wanted him so I bought him.

I've just realised, I'm still not watching Zhon, for some reason... *does that now*
Hes uch a sweetie though, its odd that I'm gushing over a dead animal, but there you go... It must take talent from her to make me do so!

Indeed! And I've found freeze dried ducklings very easy to gush over.
=seriousbadger also has one from *Zhon and I instantly fell in love with it when I came across its pictures a few months back. When I saw that *Zhon had one of these ducklings for sale in her newest sale list, I pounced the opportunity. :

Getting anything else from her?
I just find ducklings in general easy to gush over... Freeze dried or live ^.^ They'd make such cute pets... Getting FRiends nostagia... I loved the chick & the duck from that series

I'm probably not getting anything else from her but I'd love that civet skull or the young mountain lion pelt. At least wishing doesn't cost anything.
I've gotten to hold live Canada goose goslings and they are just as sweet as ducklings, only bigger. ^_^

I'm getting the tufts of wolf fur she scombed out of pelts.. I'm thinking of getting a spinnig wheel, for Samoyed fur, Angora rabbit wool, and maybe ether spinng the wolf tufts or feltiung a mini wolf with them. I wouldn't make any wolf things to sell though, that'd be to much like stealing from
But just something for me maybe.
Aww, those goslings must have been so sweet! I realise my last comment sounded a bit bad.... I know ducklings are better off in the wild or in the hands of someonew who knows what they're doing... I wouldn't actually keep any as pets
Oh! And I started uploading taxidermy shots... Didn't realise how poor the quality was Heres one of them anyway: [link]

Felted animals are the cutest things ever! I've looked over tutorials on how to make them but just end up getting more confused.

I just love them! But they take forever to make... Or maybe I'm too lazy... Don't tell NimbleBun, but I'm felting her a mini Insomnia, it was meant to be a good bye presant, but it took so long, & then she came back....
They're really easy though, you just stab at them with the needle, & the wool fibres knit together & harden, & you slowly shape it... I had to teach myself, so I don't know if I'm doing it right
I made a Belgian Hare for my home economics exam, I just got him back. I'll post pics tomorrow if I can

That's what I've heard about felting. I'd guess the end result is worth it though based on the adorable creations I've seen people make?
Ohh!! I want to see your felted hare!

Please bear iun mind, this is my first completed felt animal, so the anatomy & everything is poor, but it's still the biggest one I've completed.
