Description
cody the duckling (:unfortunately (kindof) this photo was taken just after we tried to release him back with a mama duck... only to discover that she clearly wasn't his mama, and she wasn't having a bar of it. intervening just after she tried to break his neck, we decided that wandering from mama duck to mama duck to try and find the right one would probably traumatise/kill him, and so we've rung the spca, so that someone a little more qualified than us can look after him. sad to see him go, but a life cooped up in an apartment with only people for company is not a good life for a duck.
also: anyone who tells me that this is because birds have some sort of supersonic sense of smell and the mama could smell "human" on cody is gonna make me mad. birds do have a sense of smell, but for the typical bird, it's not that spectacular. some birds have better senses of smell than others, but with ducks/chickens/etc, it's pretty average, and the fact that these ducks will actually walk into your apartment if you leave the doors open cuts out any theory that they're afraid of humans. it's just that cody wasn't her baby, and it's probable that his specific cheep was what made her recognise him as not one of her own.

This has absolutely nothing to do with your story, but it reminds me of when I was four at my uncle's farm and a bunch of chicks had hatched and I got to hold them. I also recall being chased down by a cock-fighting rooster, but the visit was an overall pleasant childhood memory.

i was recently reminded of a childhood memory that in telling sounds horrid as well, but overall, i loved it too - i was taken to vanuatu by my parents one year, and not only did i get so terribly sunburnt i couldn't sleep, but i came across geckos for the first time, not knowing that they would shed their tails if caught, causing me to be left traumatised for the rest of the trip. i also nearly got hit by a car, but that wasn't quite as surprising as i tended to only just avoid the cars at home, also

^If you don't write a poem about this, I just might, 'cause it's damn poetic.
