Description
The early drafts of what we know here as "Godzilla 1985" , featured an opponent kaiju bearing the name of arguably the most popular of never-realized monsters: Bagan. Most of Bagan's fans refer to the existing model from the "Godzilla Studio Tour" ROM that depicts Bagan as a sort of Godzilla-like creature, who is larger and has menaced both the King of the Monsters as well as Mothra in other scripts.
Using the small illustration (like other unmade kaiju I've done) I decided to start off with the original concept: a combined totem pole monster of a kaiju dragon, simian and fish. I tried to implement an aesthetic as I have before with a "1984" feel of hoe a monster suit would appear on screen next to the Godzilla suit of that time.
I will incorporate this into my next piece, the original "Return of Godzilla". Stay tuned!

The Bagan From The Return of Godzilla (AKA The Resurrection of Godzilla) Is Appearently, Cooler Than The Mothra vs. Bagan (Or The Godzilla vs. Bagan) Design (In My Opinion). I Forget That It Has Got Wings and a Fish Tail.

Yeah, I think that the other design for "Bakan" is even worse. Looks like it haves a crocodile penis.

I also like Gabara. Like there are just a ton of Kaijus that like that not many people like or are just forgotten.
However, the only Kaiju that I don't like in the Godzilla series is Keizer Ghidorah because Monster X could have been it's own thing rather then being another Ghidorah.

I think Monster X is meh, but I like Keizer Ghidorah's design. While I'm ok with him being a Ghidorah, I do see your point that he would stand out more if he were his own creature. (who knows, instead they should have had Bagan, speaking of the devil! )

Like why not make him grow a pair of wings? Like Hyper Zetton did? It would have been allot cheaper then make another suit.
In fact, I did saw pictures of a statue of Monster X with a pair of wings.

Ya know, I think I would've like to see Mothra Leo fight this instead of that male ass Dagarlah. I'm sorry Fourgreen, I know you like Dagarlah and that's cool, but Rebirth of Mothra always fell flat for me. I mean, they were playing around with the idea of pitting Mothra against Bagan at one point, so why they didn't dig up that idea for the trilogy I don't know. Instead we got some bullshit about a boring lost civilization with a holographic princess who did jack shit, and a bad Furby knockoff.Β

True dat. Grand King Ghidorah looks boss and everything, but I think people would prefer to see that design in a Godzilla movie instead of Mothra. Speaking of Godzilla, Death Ghidorah would make a decent mid-movie cannon fodder for him.

Very cool. It certainly never did have the streamline and elegant design of the "Super Godzilla" game version...but this does have it's own merits. Chimera monsters are often times some of the most visually interesting beasts there can be. It just shows a wide variety of thought. Unfortunately this is just a concept that I donβt think will ever work with Godzilla. Itβs just too anime influenced and fits better for actual βheroβ types of programming. An example of this is Power Rangers or Ultraman. In fact there quit a few Ultraman monsters that are βChimera beasts. You have Tyrant, Giga Khimaira. Jumbo King, and Izmael are ones I can think of right now. There might be one or 2 that I am missing thoughβ¦
And speaking of Ultraman, your monkey design (even though I know it is from the actual drawing you took inspiration from it), really reminds me of the fire ape monster Gora, from Ultraman 80. Which is not that crazy when you think about the time period that Return of Godzilla was probably hitting the βsketching boardsβ and planning stages. I am sure someone was a fan of Ultraman 80 when they did that drawing of him.
Anyway, nice image as always. Looks great. I love the clashing colors too. Really reminiscent of a Totem Pole. And not to go off on another tangent...but hereβs a reference that goes waaaaaaaaay back into the nerd territory. The old cartoon, Paw Paw Bears And that living Totem Pole that comes to life, that is made up of a bear, a turtle, and an eagle. Major bonus points if you remember that show lol.
π: 0 β©: 1
Fourgreen In reply to earthbaragon [2014-06-11 15:59:38 +0000 UTC]
WOW! I looked up Gora and yes it really does resemble Bagan's "ape form". Not unheard of, in terms of the same idea of Shilagee from "Ultraman Towards the Future being|" an unused Bagan design as well...
I can't believe you pulled Paw Paw Bears out of nowhere. I completely forgot about that cartoon! I don't, however, remember the living Totem.
I feel like Bagan is one of those kaiju who was never quite special enough to be considered to be put into production, although he would indeed fit right in with the Mothra trilogy villains, instead of the over-use of Ghidorahs. LOL

earthbaragon In reply to Fourgreen [2014-06-11 16:50:35 +0000 UTC]
Yep, near the end of every episode the princess would use her moon stone to bring to life the totem pole that protects the village. It's hard to find any images on the internet of them, just the screen capture of this.
cdn.iofferphoto.com/img3/item/β¦
You'd have to look up episodes or the opening of the show on youtube to see them in action. An interesting side note...Frank Welker did the "voice" of the Bear. Now...to only see a classic Optimus Prime vs that bear thing picture haha!.
Yeah, it would have been nice to see him in there instead of King Ghidorah. But I can understand why. Films with "new" kaijus just don't fair as well as the ones that use the time and tested ones. Personally I believe that is a load of crap...cause usally the films with the new monsters have bad plots or bad pacing. Look at Godzilla X Megagilras and Godzilla vs Space Godzilla to understand that.Β They went with a Ghidorah for the first Mothra and it did well. Then they tried something new...and it didn't do so well. So why take a change on ending your series on a bad note with another new one...why not just bring back something famous. As a monster fan that is frustrating as hell. But from a business standpoint I can understand where they are coming from.
Now my big question here is what do you suppose Bagan's powers would have been? Considering it was the 80's...and we had a very "hands on" Godzilla...I just don't see him having any kind of beam weapons. Godzilla vs Biollante was not the beam happy fights that would happen in the 90's. But I could be wrong...and probably am.

Fourgreen In reply to earthbaragon [2014-06-11 17:33:32 +0000 UTC]
I don't get the "new monsters don't sell well" theory either. Dagarla is EASILY the most impressive new monster from the Mothra Trilogy over Desghidorah and Cretaceous Ghidorah. I guess I am a sucker for sea-based kaiju, and he was very colorful and menacing. I think what hurt that film most was a lack of merchandise to capitalize on the new villain.
Space Godzilla, another favorite kaiju of mine, suffered from poor production values and a jengy script. Megaguirus is a strong entry, and has one of the more exciting final battles we've seen in a few films of the time period.
I get that Mothra has the female audience, and I get that Ghidorah is enemy #1, but even they were "new" at some point.Β Right?
I looked at various media depicting Bagan's abilities. Some show him emitting some sort of electricity and others give him a beam weapon from his mouth...One version grants him the ability to sprout wings even.

It should be noted that suit actor Ryu Hurricane came up with this particular design for '1984 Bagan', for a Japanese Godzilla book. And in turn, he also did the accepted fan looks and B&W artwork for Majin Tuol, Mogu, and improved takes on Erabus and Redmoon.
There's also a wealth of Bagan designs at the follwoing Facebook page, including three very different versions for the video game "Super Godzilla" (all with a third eye and gold tufts of fur), that could have been their own original kaiju beyond Bagan, though I yet to find confirmation there.
