Only the pure of heart can see the land hidden behind the torii gates.Today I watched my boyfriend finish his first playthrough of Okami, the game I've loved ever since I first got my hands on the Wii version. Seeing a playthrough of it again filled me with inspiration, and I simply had to draw the majesty that is Shiranui again.
Style again heavily inspired by Okami's art style. It's such a pleasure to work with!

Indeed, it looks like it could almost be a screenshot, though the graphics easily surpass the Wii version XD Though at the same time it looks like it could be traditionally made, if you ignore the glow effect. ^^ I like that behind the torii is like a different world even if there's night there too.
I'm still stuck in this game but maybe I'll get back to it.

I would say Amaterasu is more of Shiranui's clone, would you?

Not really. Issun refers to Shiranui, talking to Amaterasu, as "You from 100 years ago", which would make them the same. Near the end of the game, Waka also talked to Amaterasu about "You waited patiently until the chosen one (Nagi) was born", again indicating that Amaterasu and Shiranui are the same.

One thing, Amaterasu does not seem to recognize ANYONE from Shiranui's past (not even Ishaku). She only gets ONE vision of the past of when Shiranui gave Izanagi's sword the power to defeat Yamata No Orochi.
It is almost like they are spiritually connected yet not at the same time. Kind of like the Avatar in TLAB, wouldn't you agree?

That's true, Amaterasu has just about gone completely blank memory wise. Added that they are given different names and called incarnations of each other, but also referred to as 'you', makes it all the more confusing. :')
Then again, I guess you shouldn't really think too hard about some of the strange things happening in mythology/game stories, and just enjoy the wonder of it.
I haven't watched Avatar though, so I don't really know what the avatars have in common, beside that they are the only ones who can master all four elements.

Besides, another thing that implies Shiranui is male is how Susano'o believes Amaterasu male due to her predecessor whom he was told was male.

I remember now Shiranui is referred to as a male in Okamiden, but I've been stubbornly calling Shiranui a female, since the Wii version (and the Steam version for PC, too) mentioned no gender for Shiranui, but they did call Amaterasu 'mother of us all', and Shiranui and Amaterasu were referred to as being the same being. So there's where that came from.
So yeah, just me being stubborn and forgetting about Okamiden. :')

I still havent played okamiden XD I like started it and totally forgot! But to be fair you could argue that shiranui was just the envoy which amaterasu later inhabited. The game is both heavily mythology and sci fi. It does not have to strictly fit the myth. Also your art is adorable I love it so much!

Okamiden is good, but in my opinion shouldn't be compared to Okami (except for the music, which was just about as good in the OST version). I enjoyed most of the new characters, but the gameplay experience is really really different. Then again, that's largely due to it being only available on the DS, which limited the smoothness of the graphics, loading times (the zones are so small), overall game size, and apparently many other small things too, such as camera rotation in combat.

He'd heard me going on and on about how much I loved this game, and eventually, when we failed to find a TV for the Wii, the game was released on Steam, and that was the moment we started playing it. ^^

I got the Steam Version too, despite having it for PS2 and PS3 already. I wanted to record a playthrough and it is easiest on PC.Β
Also, nice to hear that he had good fun with it. This game is so good.

I've oddly never had a chance to play this game and only learned of it through dA oof, I'm hoping I can get the HD version sometime.

I also learned of it through dA, through the 2008 contest, actually.
Luckily the game has been re-released on tons of home consoles and PC since 2006, so there's more than enough opportunity to get it should you feel like playing it one time. ^^
