Description
Now, before acting like a fucking dumbass, read the entire description. Why? It taught us values.
Granted, it may have but it also taught us hatred and intolerance towards people, see the big past for example, salem witch trials, Templar crusades.
It won't get rid of anything!
Yes, it may not but it would get greatly reduce bigotry, racism, sexism and all the other things, and we'd be less divided. And yes, there'd still be jackasses around like Stalin for example but at least less people would've died, because we'd have less motivations for things like the Holocaust, WBC, etc.
And what would this exactly accomplish?
We'd have advanced research, space travel, cures for deadly diseases (stem cell research), ability to regrow limbs (stem cell research) and many things stem cell research would have.
And what would we lose?
Holidays and death tolls, to be honest, it sounds like a fair trade, especially since I don't celebrate holidays.
I'm not saying that religion has caused all problems, I'm just saying that we could do without it because mankind used it wrong, and if you want to do it right, just focus on love and tolerance (no pony reference intended) instead.

There are rational and sane religious folk too. ISIS is just what happens when people take religion too far and abuse it for selfish power-gaining reasons.

I don't see how that makes me a hypocrite, though and saying ISIS is proof we need to abolish all religion is pretty closed-minded. We should abolish all hate groups, not believe systems.

You're so stupid. You can't just get rid of religion. If Obama said one day "ok guys no more religion you can't pray anymore ok bye". You really think people who dedicated their life to God would just say "well can't worship anymore too bad." People will ALWAYS be religious, making a law about it would just give some people another reason to hate the government. If there was a law where you couldn't be gay anymore, do you honestly think gay people would automatically turn strait?

I don't believe in any organised religion, but I'm not an atheist either. I believe in scientific spirituality, and that there is or may be SOME form of higher energy matter in this universe that spawned existence as we know it. (call it a "god" if you will.)
Maybe a better way to phrase this would be to say get rid of certain religious dogma instead. Spirituality and faith in a higher entity are not the same as religious dogma. Organised religion is just a social concept humans invented to control and rule the masses.
Many of these dogmatic scriptures are altered and revised over time to accommodate cultural and political changes.
Politics have always been a huge part of organised religion. Even punishment itself is a mere concept humankind invented for themselves to keep the masses under control, saying there is a god who will punish them for their wrongdoings and sins.
But if there really is such a higher power akin to a god, who really knows how it views it's creations? Nobody, because there's no tangible proof of it's existence. Being atheist or agnostic in this age is perfectly fine because science has yet to prove the existence of such an entity known to be god. Science is the key. Maybe one day in the future, science will discover such a higher power, but until that day comes humanity will continue to use dogmatic religion as a tool to oppress the masses based on cultural and political standards. Homosexuality wasn't always considered a sin by older religions but it became a "sin" after a political anti-Pagan movement made by newer religions.
And let's not forget, there are even older ancient religions (like Aztecs) who exalted mass murder and human sacrifice. They truly believed this was the correct way to please their gods. Nowadays, it's a dead religion and we know better because society and science has progressed to have a better understanding of these matters. And you can definitely bet that in the future even all these modern religions that exist now will be dead religions too, because humanity will have discovered an even better understanding of how life and universal laws function. Perhaps there will be a newly evolved religion that will prosper for a while before humanity gains yet more understanding and replaces it with an even newer religion, and so forth. Religions have existed and died out numerous times in human history. It has happened before, and it will happen again. Even Christianity itself is a fairly young religion being only around 2,000 years old. The ancient Egyptian religions were much older at over 5,000 years of existence before dying out. So, nobody can say that modern religion won't die out eventually too and be replaced with newer, more advanced religions. It's just a matter of time.
Science will prevail, and one day people will find a scientific understanding for all that is currently unknown. Such as the existence of a possible god or an afterlife or supernatural phenomena, etc. Then religion won't be needed and it will slowly die out as humanity will possess a higher consciousness of their own existence and origins. Again, science is the key.

I have to agree with you on this one. Religions have brought faith and something for people to believe in and follow. However, it restricts people's choices and shuns certain people for their differences, such as homosexuals and people from other religions. I want to be atheist when I grow up. I want to have a happy family and a happy life without needing some legends made up by one guy to dictate my decisions for me.

Hates-olives In reply to velvetrose773 [2015-10-23 21:40:18 +0000 UTC]
Why? This person wants to take away people's rights to believe what they want. They can't practice their own religion, go to church, or own a bible. But other than that, simply believing or practicing a religion is different than trying to take other people's rights. I don't get why people attack innocent Christians for just simply believing in god. They should only complain about a small part of Christians trying to take away their rights, not try to get rid of religion as a whole.

Then believe what you want. It's fine. I'm not /that/ cruel and biased. And I'm only speaking about the people who take advantage of something that could have brought eternal peace to the world and using it against others, and not just Christians. I was only voicing how I just decided to back out of this and just not be religious. I'm out. - explodes -

People should have the freedom to believe whatever they want. Wanting to get rid of ALL of it is just sick and immature. Also, we won't benefit much from it. It will only cause greater problems for obvious reasons...
It's like forcing Atheists to be Christian.
