Now, before acting like a fucking dumbass, read the entire description.Why? It taught us values.
Granted, it may have but it also taught us hatred and intolerance towards people, see the big past for example, salem witch trials, Templar crusades.
It won't get rid of anything!
Yes, it may not but it would get greatly reduce bigotry, racism, sexism and all the other things, and we'd be less divided. And yes, there'd still be jackasses around like Stalin for example but at least less people would've died, because we'd have less motivations for things like the Holocaust, WBC, etc.
And what would this exactly accomplish?
We'd have advanced research, space travel, cures for deadly diseases (stem cell research), ability to regrow limbs (stem cell research) and many things stem cell research would have.
And what would we lose?
Holidays and death tolls, to be honest, it sounds like a fair trade, especially since I don't celebrate holidays.
I'm not saying that religion has caused all problems, I'm just saying that we could do without it because mankind used it wrong, and if you want to do it right, just focus on love and tolerance (no pony reference intended) instead.

The funny thing about religion is that most are peaceful in nature. Christianity, Buddhism, and Judaism teach their followers to be kind and loving to other people. It's the extremists that led to events like the Crusades or the Holocaust. They do not embrace the key elements of the religion they claim to follow, and will make up reasons to hate others.
Even if religion were to be non-existent, there would still be people out there discriminating against each other for even more petty reasons. For example: the enslavement of Africans by Europeans had little to do with religion, and instead was instigated by numerous technological advantages and the need for cheap labor. In it's essence, greed. Most crimes have nothing to do with religion, instead being the result of greed, power-mongering, sexual lust, and other less-than virtuous desires. There's no denying that there are people out there who will harm their fellow human beings for almost no reason at all, and regardless of whether of not religion exists, there will always be people like that.

I don't think religion is exactly bad, but it's just the people that overdue it, such as the people given in your examples. If religion didn't exist, then I think the world would be a more lost, chaotic place in my opinion. Religion has taught us to be a bit more positive, and that there is purpose in life. And this is coming from a person that's atheist and that never went to church, so I half-agree with this.
But believe me, it annoys me when religious people shove religion up my throat, say that "God makes all of our decisions" "Gays are sinners because it goes against the Bible, or that a man is supposed to love a woman.." :/ There's kids in my old school that think athiests are devil worshipers and sinner for not believing in God. Well to be honest it's not religion itself that's the problem, it's the nutters that overdo it in every possible way that are the problem.
There's perfectly sane and tolerant people who are religious in this world, so damning their beliefs because of the extremists is a bit one-sided and slightly hypocritical.
Ignorance isn't born out of belief, it's born out of being uneducated in what is right.
If you're going to abolish all religion than you'd better be on the level to get rid of ALL of them. Not just Christianity and Catholicism; which seem to the two that get the most crap.
Getting rid of religion wouldn't solve anything... People who do things in the name of 'God' aren't actual 'Holy men doing God's work' -- They're either extremists who are crazy or they're just plain bonkers.
So many people seem to think that getting rid of religion would solve the world's problems and create some kind of euphoria but the fact remains that religion isn't the problem. In fact... Religion in and of itself doesn't exist. There's believers and those that don't. Neither one is right 99% of the time but they all think they are.
Tolerance is key, and it's not just religious people who need to learn it.
It is a sharp and cruel double edged sword.
You're demanding we abolish religion is being intolerance, and chances are your views are based upon seeing the bad side of 'religion'; AKA the extremists.
You're playing it like the end of religion is the salvation for humanity. Sorry to disappoint but the fact is humankind is stunted in it's advances because of greed and power, not religion. Religion is often the only lifeline of hope for many many people in this world, more so than it is their crutch for wrong doings.
Banning religion wouldn't solve anything. Trust me, it wouldn't. It would cause more wars than you can imagine. You'd be taking away people's rights by disbanding religion. Not to mention it would be completely impossible to do it. People will believe no matter what, and if you'd admit that those people should be damned for it then you should ask yourself what you really want to accomplish here?
Banning religion or pushing for a communistic type of life? You can argue this isn't the case but that's one of the steps; take people's rights away and force them to do as you say, believe in what you believe in, and if they disobey they are punished as an example.
See, the thing with religion is you don't have to believe in it, you don't even have to care it exists. No one is forcing anyone to do anything. Most normal people who are religious don't force their views on people or knock on doors at 7am to 'preach' and leech money from people.
Extremists are not the example for all.
