Pit, aka. Kid Icarus - second piece to be completed for the NinDB Forums [link] characterama... or whatever we're calling it... where members are randomly given Nintendo characters to draw.I was quite pleased with the pose on this one... though I do wish someone would tell me all the secrets to making it look REALLY good!

This was more of a combination of his NES, GB and SSBB looks, with a few of my own flourishes. At the moment I'm going through a phase of following official artwork more closely than this

Excellent work! love how you based him more in his classic desing than in the new one. it fits wonders in your style.

My style kinda developed as a response to not being able to draw Nintendo's "serious" characters. But really... the style is all in the eyes. I can't draw fancy comic book eyes or realistic eyes... hence the big oval ones ;D

Yeah, but I don't get it! Also, even with Mr. super-thin pen, the lines look too thick and messy. Argh!

Answer to thin lines? Draw bigger.
... Not actually kidding its really the only way. We've grown up drawing small its time to grow out of that. The other alternative is to make it bigger on computer and thin the lines digitally. Since you use Illustrator that shouldn't be hard to pull off to make them smoother, either.
Once you've mastered the line-work we can worry about the colouring.

Technically Photoshop's the same, only with a pen instead of a mouse.

It's not. In Photoshop it feels like painting - smooth and intuitive. With Illustrator, though the results are awesome, you're basically drawing with maths. This curve here, remove this shape from this one.
Great results, but there's something... uncreative about it. No idea why I feel that would be improved if I was using a pen, but whatever
