i dont know why she said blocking since it is technically a transparency lock, but what it does is it allows you to draw on the layer, add new colors etc. and what you draw will only show up on what is already on the layer, like grouping the layer(or clipping mask as some call it, same thing.)

Very Nicely done. I've often found shadowing and texturing very difficult to do.
