Description
Hmm. Dunno if this is supposed to go here or under Mixed Media tutorials...I just remembered about this so I may as well post it up.
This is a simple tutorial (if that's even the right way to describe it) or how I colour when using pencils. It's just the way that I do things and is only really a guide, so don't take it as Gospel.
Oh yes, pardon the picture quality. These were taken on my phone's camera.
The finished pic's in the scraps by the way.

coould you do this with other coloured pencils, or just a particular kind?

I'm guessing you can do it with other pencils well enough. The higher quality ones tend to be better for it though, as they'll blend together more effectively.

Very nice I follow a similar Layering technique
Mine involves more use of the complimentary colors too.

That's something I need to try practicing more, really. I understand enough colour theory to implement it, but I never seem to actually do so. I've seen your work and you do it very well

With colored pencil it's really practical. The layering technique really lends itself to color theory. hehe Thank you

That looks awesome - kind of made me realize how to colour in general, or atleast made me aware of it! Cool, thanks!

This is really something I've needed to see for a long time. I use more or less the same principle, layering with different colors, but I think I've always applied to much to my base layer. Also, I just haven't practiced as much. xD
This was very helpful, I'm gonna put your techniques to the test the next chance I get.

This is a great help much appreciation for making it. What kind of pencils are you using?

(Sorry about the late reply)
I think these were just some pencils I bought at WHSmiths, probably the "Artist Quality" range of their own brand.

QUESTION:
(im gonna regret asking this, but no worries im already stupid enough
)
What do you use to get hand-drawn images on the computer?

Holy super-late reply, Batman! (Real sorry 'bout that )
What do you use to get hand-drawn images on the computer?
If I'm understanding the question right, then there's two ways I go about it.
If I've drawn something on paper then I just use a scanner and scan it as a jpeg file.
Otherwise I just draw straight into Photoshop using my Wacom tablet

Very helpful tutorial I love learning different ways to do things, since different styles of coloring can actually help you realize some flaws in your own and how to improve
Heh heh, Felicia looks like she's a little...bothered in that outfit xD

i just plain suck at using colored pencils... well actually, i just plain suck at using any colored substance lol.... i need to practice more... im the beginning , how did you make the switch from black in white to coloring your pictures
π: 0 β©: 1
funkyalien In reply to NieroDraegon [2008-08-10 22:41:44 +0000 UTC]
Um... Not really sure I get the question since there isn't really a switch between the drawing and the colouring. It's just an extra step, really ^^'

sorry, i was in a hurry this morning be i had to leave... uhhh what i mean is how did you make the switch from drawing black and white to coloring your pictures... other peoples tutorials, trial and error, normal born tallent that happened to be hidden.... or you just said SHAZAM and now you can color like crazy^^,
π: 0 β©: 1
funkyalien In reply to NieroDraegon [2008-08-11 14:30:22 +0000 UTC]
Again, there really isn't a switch between them. In order to colour something, there's gotta be something there to colour. In this case I just did the lineart, then put the colours on it. It's no different than many many years ago when I'd just draw something and decide to put some colour on it. As I say, it's just another step, really.

oh.. well im afraid to color because i dont do a good enough job in my opinion ... the first picture that i colored... i had completly ruiened it and ended up redrawing it from scratch.. i make a habbit of drawing pics in their final forms, shading, proper lines, high detail, ect. anyway thanks dude... maybe in a couple of years i might do one decent colored picture ^^

That's cool. Really helpful.
But tell me, how bad is it that I never thought of using yellow as a base for reds?
π: 0 β©: 1
funkyalien In reply to Dagger-13 [2008-08-10 17:18:00 +0000 UTC]
Not that bad. I can't remember how long I may have been doing it out of habit before hand, but I only really learned about it a few years ago from loonging at Hyung Tae Kim's artwork and some other tutorials.
Now I use a light yellow base for pretty much everything with pencils.

Never heard of this Hyung Tae Kim chap, but I'm checking out some of his stuff now and it looks pretty good.
I'll definately try out yellow bases next time I get around to colouring something.

Awesome rundown on how you use your colored pencils bro. I was wondering, how did you get the texture for the brown panty-hose? Did you stipple? Or you just layered down like you did in the tutorial here?
π: 0 β©: 1
funkyalien In reply to mrcontroversial [2008-08-10 23:08:28 +0000 UTC]
Hm... I don't really remember. I'd think it was just the same layering technique, though I may have gone over it one last time with the dark brown, sorta scribbling in some texture.
