Description
And here's the finished version of the work in progress I posted earlier. So, this is a page from the Kaeman vs Tech comic I'm doing. I can't guarantee the whole thing getting done, nor even the 14 pages I've actually thumbnailed for this section of the comic, but it'll be a fun distraction from other things I need to do.
This page was really fun to work on. I'd never really tried doing something like this entirely in greyscale before so working with just the tones was a new challenge. It's hugely inspired by =Endling 's comics, particularly Everafter .
So as for what's happening here:
Kaeman has just started his counter attack against the speedy Tech and driven him back. He then prepared his special move and stands waiting for Tech to make his attack. As he does so, Kaeman begind his special teleport move, Zero-360.
Zero-360 is effectively space compression, allowing him to move as if teleporting. This is very similar to Jehuty's Zero Shift in Zone of the Enders.
Advanced critique is on. I know of some flaws but since this was comic practice I'd like to know what works and what doesn't. Lemme have it
Media: blue pencil and HB mechanical pencil (0.5), Photoshop CS2

Tech © Richard Maynard

Whenever I can get more done in my spare time. Gonna have to redo the thumbnails for many of the pages since they're a bit sparce with the panels.
Yo, did you get my notes and emails? Still waiting on a reply.

So far this is the only page, but I'll do more in between drawings and commissions. I'm not gonna colour it since I just wanna do something greyscale and it would take ages to do.

well i'm 'thinking' of doing a comic about their second fight most likely...where Tech has a better understanding of the 360 move and can counter it etc u know.....make a nice power gap etc lol
We love power gaps

Mm, that's a pretty good idea. Like a 2 part thing or something
That's if either of use actually make ours of course

I really do like your shading, it's smooth.
I like especially the background in the first panel, and Tech's highlights in the second. Nice work

Thanks It was interesting to work on a full background for a change, and the shading was fun to do.

This looks cool, I was expecting colour but it looks great in greyscale! It took me a while to get what was going on, though...until I read the description. That helped
Apart from that (and it's probably just me...), I really like it.

Nah, I reckon not a whole lot of people will know what's happening here unles they read the description. I've sorta gone right into the middle of the action afterall.

SuperMichaelMan [2007-08-22 05:36:46 +0000 UTC]
looks great, my only nitpick is about the transition of panel to panel, it happens a little to quick, it makes the scene speed by really fast and not stay in the viewers mind for long(try to get the reader to stop and smell the roses of your art work, not just the story alone), i dont know much about things, but i do at least know a little about comics and sequentials...unless of course you wanted something really speedy in which case...WICKED COOL MAN! (great job with the unboarded panels that bleed off the page it really gives a sense of a wide open space)

funkyalien In reply to SuperMichaelMan [2007-08-22 12:23:51 +0000 UTC]
The transition of the panels is something I quickly became aware of once I was done thumbnailing. Most of the pages have about 4 panels at most, with only the odd few making it to 6. From what I gather that's fine for a lot of manga, but not quite what I was going for. The action is supposed to be rather quick but I guess I went a bit too far with it

Not too likely I'm afraid. This is just something I'm doing for the practice so it may not even get finished. It would be cool to see it in print but I don't think it's gonna happen.

Hey funky alien, artists here who know how to use the computer for coloring or drawing? I've seen your drawings and other peoples drawings and stuff is mentioned about coloring and shadowing thru computer? Sorry I don't even know the names of what's used to color, shadow, draw, etc. but if you can help me I'd like to find out because most of my artwork is not in color, but I'd like to learn how to add color to some of them by using the computer.
Hope to hear from you soon and anything you can tell me about this is a great help!
Also my Daughter told me there's something you can buy for artists to draw on to get artwork on computer without having to scan pictures, etc? I don't know the names of these things or where to buy them, but I'd like to find out.
Thanks,I appreciate it!

This may take a bit of explaining so bare with me. I'll try to be as informative as I can.
Firstly, the device your Daughter mentioned is called a Graphics Tablet. It's basically a pad and stylus that acts very much like a traditional pen and paper. You draw on the pad and it translates the position to the same point on the screen. It takes a little getting used to at first, but you can write and draw on the computer as if you were doing so on paper.
The most common brand of tablet is Wacom as they specialise in producing them and are widely considered as the best and most trusted brand. I personally own a Wacom Graphire 3 with a 4x6 inch drawing area. There are larger sizes available but this size suits my needs and space requirements. There are also different types, ranging from the cheaper Graphire, Bamboo, and Volito for beginners and intermediate, to the much more pricey Intuos and Cintiq.
I would recommend Graphire if you can afford it.
Now onto the computer colouring itself.
Most of the time you see a digital piece of art, the chances are that it's been created in (or editted with) Adobe Photoshop. It's a digital imaging software used for photo editting and manipulation, and digital art.
There are various other programs available too. Corel's Painter behaves as though painting with real natural media like watercolour or oils. It is also hugely popular in the creation of digital artwork.
Paint Shop Pro is the cheaper alternative to the expensive Photoshop, and is a good program for both beginners and professionals alike.
The Gimp is a free download program that acts much like Photoshop, which is rather expensive.
Open Canvas is also free, but only version 1. I believe higher versions need to be purchased, though I have no idea how much.
There are many other programs available, all with different uses. I obviously can't link them all here, and if I did I'd have to give further detailed technical explaination to differenciate their purposes.
Out of these programs, I use Photoshop for the majority of my work. I also use Paint Shop for minor things like website graphics, Open Canvas for the occasional sketching and online network sessions, and Flash and Toon Boom for animation. Each of these programs has a different use (Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro being very similar), but all of them are made easier to use with the Wacom graphics tablet.
If I'm to recommend a starting point for you, I would say Paint Shop Pro and a Wacom tablet. You can learn the basics from various website tutorials, PolyKarbon being the one that got me off to a good start. Once you have a good grasp of these you can upgrade to something more advanced.
I hope this helps out. If you have anymore questions just ask

I'm not that good at drawing comics, but you prove to be!
One thing I see a little wrong is Kaeman's leg, his left leg should be
tilted more up up. Other than that, the comic is REALLY good. :3

Thanks
That's a good point actually. It doesn't really look like there's enough power there, but I guess in a way all he'd need to do is just appear there and Tech will fly into the knee himself. Still, raising it would have looked better
