Description I have a small collection of Chadogu, the tools used in Tea Ceremony, and I thought I would take some nice, artsy pictures of them. It's no fun if they just collect dust in a corner.

I believe this is a Takatori-yaki chawan. Takatori-yaki is made in the Chikuzen area of Kyushu, within the Fukuoka prefecture. Takatori ware is one of the various styles of Japanese ceramics that traces its roots to Korean pottery. During the "Pottery Wars" in the 1590s when Japan invaded Korea, many Korean potters were forcefully relocated to Japan so that they could produce quality pottery for the country's elite. Korean pottery was considered some of the finest in Asia at the time, and was much more advanced than Japanese pottery. Many of Japan's most esteemed ceramic styles, such as Hagi-yaki and Karatsu-yaki, can be traced to these kidnapped Korean potters. The name of Takatori-yaki can be traced to the kiln Lord Nagamasa Kuroda established in 1600 near the base of Mt. Takatori, and the style eventually became one of the seven famous kilns of master Kobori Enshu. As such, it is a highly revered, if somewhat uncommon, ceramic style.

This piece in particular has a sansai glaze, a three color glaze. This type of glaze is rather difficult to photograph, and when I saw the original auction photos of this piece I thought the bowl was white.

The tea dish next to the bowl is from the tea ceremony demonstration at the Gion Odori, the annual dance recital put on by the maiko and geiko of Gion Higashi. It has pieces of yokan, a gelatinous sweet made from adzuki beans and sugar.

EDIT: The description was updated with more accurate information.

I just wished it was easier finding them in Australia. Where I live there isn't many Japanese specialty stores so things are hard to come by.

Is that like red bean jello? Sounds tasty!

It's not quite the same as jello, but it is similar. It's made from agar instead of an animal-derived gelatin, and it's healthier since it's derived from algae. The gelatin is also thicker than jello, and it doesn't jiggle. But it does have the texture of a gelatin, and it does taste good .

Cool. I know I have a severe weakness for sweet red bean anything, but I don't think I've had agar jellies before.

Thank you very much, I'm flattered. I was rather pleased with the red and blue coordination, since this actually managed to bring out those tricky colors on the bowl .
