Story:
The air feels heavy with a kind of solemnity Noah has never felt before. He knows he should be rejoicing, or maybe crying, actually, never mind. He isn't sure what he's supposed to be doing. The vet left hours ago after breaking the bad news to him. Or is it good news? He really isn't sure. All he knows is one of the twins is gone. He'll never get to see it playing in the field with it's mother, or sleeping peacefully in the grass. He'll never get to teach it all the tricks Phoenix knows, or spoil it rotten with treats and new halters.
He really should be happy. He'll get to do all those things and more with the remaining foal. With only one fetus Phoenix has a much higher chance at a successful pregnancy. A small part of him is relieved that the threat to his beloved mare's life has been eliminated. He knows he couldn't have chosen between the two to abort like the vet recommended. Who was he to decide one life was more valuable than the other? He really ought to be happy. Instead, he feels hollow. Like the small foal who'd barely begun to live had taken a piece of him with it. He wonders if Phoenix feels the loss of her unborn child as keenly as him. He doubts it. At four weeks the embryo is barely the size of a pea. She probably doesn't even know she's pregnant.
