Description I wanted to try out a few new coloring and rendering techniques for some upcoming commissions, and, as many of you may have noticed, those kinds of sketches end up either being He-man or Superman. So here's He-man

This is the New Adventures version, but I tried my best to make him look like he could fit in either the classic or 2002 versions. And, in true MOTU fashion, his legs are the same as Trap-Jaw (and Roboto, and a few others...), just with a different color scheme. I also replaced a few little details with classic or 2002 elements, but he still basically looks like the NA version.

I can easily see Mattel doing a 200X version that follows your template. It's quite well thought out.

Hahaha I would flip out! I haven't gotten the Classics version of him yet, but it seems like they had many of the same ideas as I did.

That's a good write-up, I think. Fortunately, I was still pretty young when the show came out (I was 7 in 1990), so I was able to view it with rose colored glasses. I don't know if you've gotten to read the mini comics that came with those toys (they're in the collection that Dark Horse released last year, if you picked that up), but they're pretty good. Not as different as the original mini comics were to the original series, but still different enough to deserve a read in their own right.

This is a much better version than the one from the Cartoon.  It makes an homage to the Classical Version w/o being a direct Carbon Copy.

Thanks!  The MOTU Classics line is coming out with something similar now.  I like to think they saw this and were inspired

You know I actually had this toy as a kid. I broke the leg off it for reasons I can't remember... and had my dad replace it with a nail.

Anyone else think the green sword looks like a light-saber?

With a nail?! That doesn't sound too safe!

Yeah, I think there were a lot of things in NA that were patterned after Star Wars, to get some distance from the more fantasy-oriented original series. I think they were trying to take it in a more sci-fi direction in an attempt to restart the franchise.

You have to wonder sometimes if that worked against them, besides tossing aside a number of beloved characters of course. Funny thing - Gary Chalk, who voiced He-Man in that series, later went on to voice Man-At-Arms in the 2002 reboot series. Crazy, no?

Whoa, I didn't know that! That's awesome! But yeah, I definitely think that worked against them, since the thing that really made He-man work (in my mind, anyway) was that it's a sci-fi/fantasy hybrid. When you take out the fantasy stuff, there's not really anything unique there.

Cool looks like somebody that can take a punch. A couple really reallly heavy punches... to gut (they hurt like hell). Designs cool, but I dont like the sword at all, it seems un he manish. Although i cant say that on good authority as I never watched the show. But still it seems rather weedy, heres this hulking fellow with this sword that looks like its made out of kryptonite. Doesnt work mans. Shouldnt his blade be something iuno... larger, or at least something that reflects his personality?

Other than all that this is awesome, I like the detail in some areas. Also he has a shadow.

GavinMichelli In reply to ZixaxiZ [2011-11-29 23:55:53 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha, I actually beefed up his sword a lot! In the cartoon, it was steel instead of that greenish stuff, but I thought the sword that came with the toy would be more interesting to paint

The look is cool but I think he has to have a sword that at least resembles the Sword of Power.

GavinMichelli In reply to saber4734 [2011-11-21 16:46:51 +0000 UTC]

I agree. In fact, that was my biggest beef with the 2002 version. Skeletor's sword looked more like the power sword than He-man's.

saber4734 In reply to GavinMichelli [2011-11-21 21:11:36 +0000 UTC]

I haven't kept up with the new versions. Everything I remember from He-Man is from the 80s.

GavinMichelli In reply to saber4734 [2011-11-22 01:07:38 +0000 UTC]

The new "Classics" line of toys is closely based on the original line, but it doesn't have a cartoon to go with it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

saber4734 In reply to GavinMichelli [2011-11-22 01:23:30 +0000 UTC]

Oh if it had a cartoon to go with it I would know. Today's cartoons suck. And i'm not just saying that because no cartoons can ever measure up to classic 80s cartoons. I am saying that because cartoons have went downhill. Like downhill and into a major pile of crap downhill.

Very impressive Painting! I can remember I passed on the New adventures when it was on TV mostly on the grounds I think most people did, it didn't look like the original and had next to nothing to do with that show, which I could not quite fathom out. Why you would not want to connect it to the original He-man seemed ludicrous, it was good. I did like the modern show, as it was more based on the original, updated with more of the sensibilities I have grown to expecting in a show, like story arks spaning mutliple episodes, shaking up the status quo and character backstories, which the original show did not pay too much attention to as it was too busy have a good fun time with itself. I did decide one day to watch all of original Masters from start to finish. I was thinking at first the animation would be worst than I remember, and you know what it was actually ALOT BETTER, I mean way better than I remember, there are moments where it looks fantastic where the animators put in the effort. All Rotoscoped but gorgeous to look at, although you see the same animation repeated a fair bit which is par for the course, Just great tongue in cheek heroic cartoons. I am about half way through She-ra, another Great show, and I think once I am done I will give New adventures another chance. I think your picture is one of the few I have found that tries selling me that that show, Very Impressive painting indeed!

GavinMichelli In reply to AlexBaxtheDarkSide [2011-11-18 20:52:58 +0000 UTC]

Yeah dude, Filmation spent a lot of money on rotoscoping stock animation for the original He-man, and it shows. The figures seem to carry real weight and mass.

I've got to say, I'll watch anything with the name He-man on it. All three animated series, She-ra, the movie with Dolph Lungren...I love 'em all. But I do think that NA should have brought more, design and story-wise, from the original. The premise was kind of neat, though. And I totally agree, the newest toon was awesome. I loved the extra back story, with the Snake Men and Hordak. I especially loved King Grayskull. I've always thought that He-man should have longer hair like that, and I really dug the cape.
