Description
I wanted to try out a few new coloring and rendering techniques for some upcoming commissions, and, as many of you may have noticed, those kinds of sketches end up either being He-man or Superman. So here's He-manThis is the New Adventures version, but I tried my best to make him look like he could fit in either the classic or 2002 versions. And, in true MOTU fashion, his legs are the same as Trap-Jaw (and Roboto, and a few others...), just with a different color scheme. I also replaced a few little details with classic or 2002 elements, but he still basically looks like the NA version.

This is possibly the first time I've EVER liked the New Adventures of He-Man's look. Loved the way you thought like Mattel and put the Trap Jaw leg designs for his. Definitely a well-thought-through design.

Ha, thanks! I was a little worried that people would be like "so you just re-used someone else's legs? LAME!", but I feel like it helps the NA design relate to the classic ones. I think that's the reason so many He-man followers dislike New Adventures. There's almost nothing in the show that relates to the original, in terms of design.

I've never seen a single episode of the series, honestly. The idea of He-Man is so ingrained in my mind as being a sword and sorcery piece with touches of technology thrown in to set it apart from the traditional. I love the original series and concept and I definitely enjoyed the reboot with the 200X line, even though elements like the Power Sword weren't quite to my liking. I've heard the story of New Adventures was cool because it had a continuity compared to the original show's stand alone episodes, but one of the pure joys of my childhood was watching Adam draw the Power Sword and say "By the Power of Grayskull!" each episode. From what I understand He-Man is always He-Man in the New Adventures (kind of like the live action movie) and that makes me underwhelmed for some reason. To this day that transformation sequence and the music behind it just work for me on every level. Even the reboot couldn't come close to the amount of excitement I get remembering the original's version. But all that aside, I congratulate your thinking and still find that design to be pretty damn badass. If they made a figure of New Adventures He-Man from the 200X line that looked like your version, I would definitely have wanted to put it on the shelf next to the rest of the ones I bought.

Oh, hell yeah! Every time I see the classic transformation scene, I get goosebumps!
Adam transforms in NA. He says "By the power of Eternia" instead of "By the power of Grayskull", and there's no Battle Cat (which is, I think, one of the biggest flaws in the show), but he still transforms periodically. I think they pulled the concept of "the elders" (that they used in 2002) from NA.

I checked out the intro the the NA show... definitely a whole different vibe going on there. With the animation, lack of badass transformation sequence and theme song that isn't nearly as memorable as the original, I remember why it would have been such a hard sell for me when it came out. Battle Cat is a deal breaker for me. I wasn't the most thrilled with the new take on him on the 200X show, but at least he was there and they even gave Cringer a badass moment when he saved Adam from Skeletor's new recruited evil henchmen. Been replaying the original transformation sequence a lot last night and it still amazes me that you can't do better than the original... so far. John Erwin's "I HAVE THE POWERRRRR!!!" is perfect. I think I grew some hair on my chest as a child when I first heard him bellow that one.

I had this toy as a kid--I loved the green sword. You really did the outfit justice!

Me too! I had a bunch of 'em...Optic, Flipshot, Flog, and at least three different versions of He-man and Skeletor.

I had the two-pack where He-Man came with Flogg (I think that was his name!)

Great rendering, Gavin, and that design definitely makes that rather lame version of the MOTU mythos look actually cool! Great job!

Haha, thanks! I'll admit, I've got a soft spot for NA. I used to watch it every afternoon when I was a kid. It used to bother me that none of the classic characters showed up except for Sorceress and Teela, though.

I never had the chance to watch it and I think I got to know about it looking through the pages of He-Man.org. I inmediately downloaded an episode from the web and got shocked by the crappy animation and the even crapier character designs! :S Good thing it never made it to national TV here in my country, would have kille the mythos! (yeah, well, maybe I exagerate on that, but the crappy looking part is real!)
