Behold, my first attempt at digital inking. It took a lot longer than my usual pen and marker inks, but the results (in my opinion ) look pretty damn good.

Thank you, sir! Yeah, this was my take on Ultimate Spidey. I wanted to differentiate him somehow from the main version, but I ended up liking this one a lot better.

channeling erik larsen and mark bagley ?

GavinMichelli In reply to Snow-katt [2009-12-01 02:02:22 +0000 UTC]

Ha ha, I guess so. You can't really draw Spidey without tipping a hat to Bagley. IMO, that guy has had just as much impact on the character as Ditko, Romita, and McFarlane. I'd say that he is really responsible for Spidey's modern look, if only by virtue of the fact that he's been drawing the webhead for the last 20 years. And yeah, I loved it when Larson would blacken in the blue of Spidey's costume. I just really love the way that solid black and red work together, and those big black chunks also help tone down all that webbing. I'm a big fan of keeping things simple.

I hope I was able to put a little bit of my own stamp on Spidey, though

dont forget stan the man
or gil kane or the criminally negelected and under apreciated ross andru
and you got my remark tip of the head to you
your spiderman looks like he could have walked out of the clone saga ( yes the clone saga im one of the few who liked the clone saga and ben ) or out of ultimate spiderman

come to thinkof it ultimate spiderman suits him more

larsen is stil the only one who blackens the blue in spidey's suit
larsen is above all my favorite spider artist if onlybecause the very first spiderman comic i bought (asm 341 ) had him as the artist

I don't remember the number exactly, but it was a Bagley ASM. The cover was a riff on ASM #50, except it had Spidey walking away from Peter, and the cover blurb said "Peter Parker no more!" The story was fairly lame, as I recall, but the art was awesome.

This is very well done, and while I think the colors could of been done better, and would of really made those awesome inks pop it still is a very nice design.

GavinMichelli In reply to Orlantis [2008-07-08 21:18:22 +0000 UTC]

True enough. I just threw some quick colors on there to give it a little life; I didn't want to linger on them. I'm glad you like the inks and the design, though Thanks!

I think "amazing" pretty much sums it up Naw, really, it's not so hard to get used to. You should give it a shot! I think those smooth digi-lines would suit your style nicely.

Well, besides the fact that i have no idea how to use any type of coloring on the computer, I'd need some major lessons or something.

Bro, whatever you use, your work always looks GRRRREAAATT! Damn, im envious! I dont know how to ink digitally or traditionally! Love how crisp all the lines are and i gotta say the final colored piece is juz awesome!

Oh, advanced Critique? It looks GGGRRREAAAATTTT!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GavinMichelli In reply to semaj007 [2008-07-07 17:27:19 +0000 UTC]

You can't be more critical than that? I actually started with the digital inking out of envy. When I was coloring 's He-man pic, I was just lusting after the lines the whole time! It's a little more labor intensive, but the product is sooo worth it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

semaj007 In reply to GavinMichelli [2008-07-07 23:33:47 +0000 UTC]

Cant deny that coz it obviously is! Damn, im envious with your piece now but i dont think im gonna follow suit. Im too lazy to learn and man, im nowhere as good as you in inking!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GavinMichelli In reply to semaj007 [2008-07-08 00:03:01 +0000 UTC]

That's good, cuz I'm nowhere near as good as you at coloring! Leave me something, dammit!!

semaj007 In reply to GavinMichelli [2008-07-08 00:24:21 +0000 UTC]

LOL... but seriously dude, i dont think you need much help in the coloring department. With your pieces like Flash and the blind kungfu guy leaving my tongue hanging out, you dont need any help at all! LOL

GavinMichelli In reply to Juggertha [2008-07-06 04:29:54 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, man. I think I'm starting to get the hang of it. Are you using the pen or brush? I've heard most digital inkers use the pen tool, but I just can't swing it for a whole picture.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Juggertha In reply to GavinMichelli [2008-07-06 07:11:27 +0000 UTC]

I only use the pen tool for massively long sweeping lines.

Usually just use a brush.
