Known mutations:
-Enhanced muscles allow them to leap great distances, owing to their frog origins.
-Can survive in both fresh water and salt water.
-Semi-intelligent in nature. Able to coordinate in groups and use primitive weapons such as rocks and sharp sticks.
-Poisonous tongues deliver a potent neurotoxin. Usually used as a last resort.
-Release pheromones that can attract some wildlife, most notably fish.
History:
A significant amount of mystery and intrigue surrounds these mutants, particularly since they were first discovered by the US military in June of 1978. How they became so intelligent or why they were so docile was baffling to say the least. No live specimens were ever captured, and only corpses in extremely poor condition were recovered.
It is believed "the Deep Ones", as they were eventually named, could trace their origins back to Salem, New Jersey. This area was the subject of a previous mutant attack by V.I.P.E.R, a monstrous slime mold that fed on radioactive items. The heavy amounts of radioactivity emitted by V.I.P.E.R contaminated everything it came into contact with, including the various lakes and rivers the mutant would use to rest and travel.
The effects of this contamination quickly surfaced in the form of mutations. Most prominently, a colossal snapping turtle and a colony of frogs. The frogs in particular, these amphibians had established a medium-sized community where they lived in relative peace. The mutants primarily fed on fish, birds and small mammals with their poisonous tongue to paralyze their prey before consuming them.
The mutants avoided contact with humans and the outside world, what little human habitation remained in the area, anyway. The mutants were also smart enough to use sharpened sticks as spears and rocks as building materiel. Their nesting ground was one such example of their construction, safely protected by a dome of stone and mud. This harmony would not last however, as the enormous snapping turtle later designated as "The Walking Island" would gain a taste for amphibian flesh when it ambushed a scouting party of the frogs by disguising itself as a large rock formation.
The amphibians attempted to fend off the attacker with rocks and their poisonous tongues, but neither had any effect on the hungry reptile as it proceeded to gruesomely maul the amphibians and consume them. The survivors who managed to flee back to the nest unknowingly left a scent trail that the turtle would slowly follow. Fortunately for the amphibians, the turtle itself would also give off a hint to it's presence with a repugnant odor that was so foul that it would literally make some of the amphibians ill.
It was thanks to this early warning that the mutants were able to prepare themselves for when the beast finally attacked. The frogs went on the attack with stones and sharpened sticks, bashing and jabbing at the reptile's defenses to no avail. The reptile bit down on the arms of one individual trying to jab it in the mouth with a spear. With the slightest exertion of it's jaws, the turtle snapped the spear and sheared off both of the creature's arms in a single move. The reptile finished the wounded combatant by knocking it down with a headbutt and then crushing it's head underfoot.
The behemoth continued to rampage through the amphibian's territory, killing and maiming anything unfortunate enough to cross it's path. The final blow came when the turtle bulldozed it's way into the frog's nesting grounds. What eggs weren't crushed by falling rock were slurped up by the turtle like a soup. In but a few moments, an entire generation of these mutants was wiped out.
With their offspring and spawning ground destroyed, the mutants were forced to abandon their territory and set out in search of a new safe haven. Even this exodus had claimed casualties, as the reptile was not willing to let it's favorite prey escape. With their home gone, the amphibians traveled south down the Delaware river in hopes of finding refuge. For days the mutants swam down the river, occasionally stopping to rest and feed. Such respite had to be kept brief, as the turtle was likely hot on their trail.
Nearly a week later, the amphibians arrived off the shores of the port town of Innsmouth, New Jersey. Innsmouth was an impoverished town founded in the early 1800s and was known for it's export of seafood caught locally. However over-fishing had caused the fish off Innsmouth to gradually disappear from the waters and thus the town began to suffer. Several buildings lay rotting and abandoned, and the ones that were occupied were in poor condition. It would take a miracle to pull the town out of it's hole, and soon a miracle would arrive in an unexpected form.
One cloudy, gloomy day a fishing trawler captained by one Obed Marsh was out on a routine run of the Delaware Bay when suddenly, the nets of the ship rapidly began to fill up. Captain Marsh and his crew believed that they might be caught on something, but when the nets were raised they were shocked to find them filled to the brim with fish! They didn't know how or why, nor did they care. All they could think of was how fortunate they were on this day. Before returning to port, Captain Marsh looked out into the water and noticed several bulbous eyes protruding from the water. The eyes peered directly at him from a moment before submerging.
Returning to port with their catch, the captain and his crew shared this miracle with the rest of town. If they could continue landing hauls like this, Innsmouth may have a chance to bounce back from the brink of ruin. One night a young woman walking along the beach spotted several strange tracks in the sand. The tracks indicated that something much bigger than a man emerged from the water and walked off towards the wetlands that surrounded the town.
The water behind her suddenly bubbled and foamed as a large humanoid figure slowly emerged from the dark seawater. The woman heard soft croaking behind her and spun around to see the hideous abomination staring back at her through several distorted bulging eyes. The woman screamed in horror from the top of her lungs and ran back into town, her cries alerting some of the townsfolk. The woman explained that she had seen a monster near the shore and that she had seen tracks in the sand.
Taking up arms, some of the townsfolk made their way to the shore where sure enough, the "monster" the woman saw was crouched on the shore, playing with some driftwood and a large seashell. The creature resembled a humanoid frog, but heavily misshapen and deformed. It sported numerous extra eyes and limbs, many of which looked atrophied and of no actual use to the creature. If it were to stand upright, the creature would easily be at least 10 feet in height. The beast lazily turned it's head to look at the townsfolk, it's throat pouch expanding as it let out a croak.
One of the townsfolk shot their rifle in the air to scare off the creature. The crack of the rifle did indeed frighten the creature, which let out a hog-like squeal and hobbled off into the marshes on all fours. Baffled by what they had just witnessed, the townsfolk reluctantly returned to their homes while others remained outside for a bit to keep watch in case the deformed monster returned.
The next morning, yet another bizarre occurrence would baffle the people of Innsmouth. In the center of town, a large pile of fish lay on a mat crudely woven out of reeds and thatch. Around the mat was pieces of driftwood and seashells arranged in an pattern, the same kind of materiel the creature from the night before was seen playing with. Every morning, the townsfolk would find this offering of fish in the same spot. Even as this was going on, the number of fish caught off Innsmouth continued to rise.
The more superstitious among the townsfolk saw this as a gift from god, and that these creatures were his messengers. Indeed, ever since these creatures arrived the fish had returned to Innsmouth in large numbers. Additionally, they seemed to be non-hostile as they had not attacked anyone and went out of their way to try and appease their human neighbors. In one instance, a little girl was found interacting with a smaller individual of this new species. In time, the townsfolk named these creatures "The Deep Ones".
However once again, fate would threaten the Deep Ones with near extinction. The ravenous turtle that nearly wiped them out had once again picked up their trail and was making a beeline towards Innsmouth. A military helicopter arrived at the town ahead of the creature, and with it came Task Force Chimera. The team consisted of former Ashdowne resident Jeremiah Langham, Vietnam sniper Michael Garret, tracker John Samson, and hunter Ranbir Singh. The task force began evacuation efforts when a group of Deep Ones emerged from the marshes to see what the commotion was.
Upon spotting the mutants, the team aimed their weapons at the creatures and nearly opened fire when they were stopped by the townsfolk. The people of Innsmouth explained that the creatures were not a threat and that because of them, their town was saved from the brink of starvation as they had brought fish back into the waters. Very skeptical of the townspeople's claims, the task force ignored the creatures for now but had every intention of destroying them once the bigger of the two mutants had been dealt with.
Moments later, the distinct silhouette of the turtle's jagged carapace could be seen in the distance rapidly approaching. The task force took up defense positions wherever they could, weapons at the ready. The Deep Ones began to grow restless, on an instinctive level they knew the threat that was approaching: the hour of judgement had arrived and the future of their species would be decided here.
The titanic reptile had previously taken out two Navy destroyers and several Coast Guard patrol boats, so the Task Force knew the odds were stacked against them. The beast finally arrived on shore, spotting it's favorite prey. The Deep Ones began to flee but before the turtle could begin it's attack, Task Force Chimera opened fire on the beast with everything they had. The sound of Garret's Bratton Mk II Anti-Armor rifle and Singh's hunting rifle drowned out the other sounds of gunfire. Despite the impressive noise, the weapons themselves had little effect on the reptile.
The Deep Ones didn't fare any better: one individual was crushed underfoot and decapitated. Another was bitten in half at the waist. Unwilling to let these beings be slaughtered, some of the townsfolk took up arms against the reptilian attacker. With small arms having little effect on the beasts, Task Force Chimera called in an air strike on the mutant once they found a way to expose it's weak underside. Seeming to understand their human allies, the Deep Ones no longer cowered in fear but stood together against this threat.
The amphibians charged the turtle and flanked. Grabbing onto the various spines on it's carapace they pulled the reptile while others pushed on the other side in an attempt to tip the beast over. Startled by the sudden retaliation from it's prey, the turtle clawed and snapped at it's attackers. One creature got too close and was seized in the turtle's jaws. With a swing of it's neck it threw the Deep One into a church steeple, impaling it on the broken wood before it was crushed to death by the falling bell.
This made the amphibians fight harder, nearly tipping the turtle over despite heavy resistance from the powerful beast. With one final effort, they at last pushed the turtle onto it's side. The jagged spines on it's carapace made getting back up even harder than it normally would have. With the turtle vulnerable, the air strike was called in and fighter planes arrived shortly thereafter. The Deep Ones retreated by the marshes as the planes launched salvo after salvo of missiles at the turtle's underside. When the final salvo truck, the turtle's abdomen exploded open and finally brought the tank-like reptile down for good.
Now believing in the claims of the townsfolk that the Deep Ones were benevolent, the Task Force chose to spare the creatures by falsely reporting that they had been killed in the strike. The turtle's corpse was airlifted from the town and dumped into the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. The town of Innsmouth was able to recover from the attack, however military interference and the near extinction of the Deep Ones had caused many to consider keeping Innsmouth off the map. Many more began to see the Deep Ones as divine beings: not only had they saved the town from starvation, they had saved the town from the dreaded reptile as well. A religious cult began to form around the Deep Ones, quickly overtaking the entire town...
