Description
Name: Abyssos
Subtitles: Monster of the Deep, The Leviathan, Stirrer of the Abyss
Height: 15 meters
Weight: 50,000 metric tons
Length: 120 meters
Diet: Carnivore
Species: Prehistoric Helicoprion descendant
Date encountered: August 3rd, 1988
Origin: Atlantic Ocean
Current status: Unknown, presumed deceased. Remains unable to be located yet sightings still persist.
Weapons and Abilities:
-Buzzsaw like tooth arrangement allows Abyssos to shred through armor and flesh with ease. The teeth whorls are attached to a complex system of reciprocating tendons, allowing for them to move in a saw-like motion.
-Long, sinewy strands of corded muscle can be fired from the two openings on the shoulders to snare prey and reel them into its buzzsaw jaws. Can also be used as grappling hooks to assist in terrestrial movement.
-Remora Hive inside chest that houses hundreds of flesh-eating, remora-like fish that can be launched at an enemy via an electrical shock followed by muscle contraction of the orifices. When not in combat, the fish will behave as normal remora and regularly emerge to clean Abyssos of parasites and dead skin.
-Primitive lung enables Abyssos to travel on land for considerable lengths of time. Locomotion is achieved by either galloping like a seal or slithering with the aid of its flippers.
Threat Assessment: Abyssos is unique in that it represents a threat to both maritime activities and settlements along the coast. Its ability to move on land enables it to expand its potential threat range beyond just the oceans. Evacuation of coastal towns and cities may be necessary if Abyssos is spotted off the waters of such settlements. Fortunately, Abyssos is not particularly interested in feeding on humans, and only attacks ships due to misidentification or because they are carrying a cargo of fish.
Weaknesses:
-Abyssos is very vulnerable on land, and even though it is able to move about, it is far more cumbersome than it would be swimming in the water.
-Abyssos cannot remain on land for too long without risk of drying out. This weakness is eliminated if there is inclement weather during a terrestrial excursion.
-Abyssos’s nose is very sensitive to a wide range of sensory input, and a powerful enough blow to the nose can stun the leviathan.
History:
A descendant of the bizarre Helicoprion, Abyssos was a colossal sea monster that first surfaced on August 3rd, 1988, nearly a year after Baronga and Gargolis. Initial sightings mistook Abyssos for the prehistoric shark Megalodon, however numerous physical differences quickly put Abyssos in a league of its own. The marine monster would generally avoid humans; however it would viciously attack large vessels after mistaking them for prey. Interestingly, Abyssos doesn’t seem to learn that these vessels aren’t edible and continued to attack them anyway. This came to a head when Abyssos attacked a US Navy fleet performing a training exercise, sinking several destroyers and heavily damaging an aircraft carrier. Abyssos was driven off with heavy bombardment, but this did not seem to injure the creature aside from making it leave.
Abyssos would up the ante on its attacks when it surfaced on land to attack a marina where several fishing trawlers were docked in order to feed on their catch. Either by accident or curiosity, Abyssos continued further inland and used its tentacle-like muscle cords to drag itself across the ground. Finally, Abyssos was redirected back into the sea when an airstrike hit the animal in its sensitive nose and put it into a sensory overload. However to ensure that Abyssos would not return, numerous submarines were waiting for the creature in the sea wherein they fired their entire torpedo payload into the creature’s face. Numerous explosions rocked the surface of the ocean, and Abyssos seemingly vanished off of submarine radar. The monster was presumed to be dead, and its threat ended at last. However, sightings of creatures matching Abyssos’s exact appearance right down to the scarring on its body continued to persist in the weeks and months following its apparent demise. Perhaps the Monster of the Deep prowls the waters still…
