History:

In the wake of the Ashdowne Nebranium plant explosion, the incident was deemed a result of simple human error and not a flaw in the plant's construction in order to ease the public's concern that the events of Ashdowne would be repeated elsewhere. In the decade since the explosion, Nebranium plants have cropped up all over the country and have functioned without a hitch. However one particular plant on the Florida coast was struggling to meet the demands of the nearby city of Clearwater. The plant had been using up so much raw Nebranium that the waste disposal site was filled to capacity.

In response, workers had been ordered to illegally dispose of the waste roughly two miles out to sea inside large metal barrels. They where to use unmarked boats and go out at night to avoid detection. For an entire decade this continued until in 1976, the consequences of these actions would begin to crop up. For several weeks, dead whales would be discovered floating off the coast of Florida and washed up on the beaches. The one thing that tied these unusual die-offs together was that all the whales had enormous bite marks in their bodies. Some with a solid chunks missing, others missing heads or even half of their bodies. The whales also displayed some form of mutation or another such as tumors, extra flippers and discoloration.

The wash-ups baffled scientists, as no animal was large enough to inflict such horrific wounds. Some sort of mutation was briefly considered, but was quickly dismissed. The world was still stunned by the appearance of The Progenitor in Oak Falls, Pennsylvania. Despite assurances by the military that the monster was a unique freak of nature, the general public was terrified of the possibility of other mutants existing. Letting unsupported speculation of another mutant existing would not only be irresponsible, it would also cause mass panic in the sensitive climate following the Oak Falls incident. The mysterious whale deaths where officially chalked up to a sickness spreading through a pod, where the dead whales where simply eaten by scavengers.

This explanation did not satisfy anyone: neither the scientists examining the corpses nor the public who where already suspecting that a mutant was involved. This also came in the wake of increased military presence near the Ashdowne ruins in Pennsylvania and alleged sightings of more creatures like The Progenitor. This further increased unease among people who refused to go swimming in the seemingly tranquil waters. Coastal towns began to feel the impact, as the number of visitors dropped and some even went as far as to move out of the area completely.

On a sunny afternoon on July 1st, a private Yacht owned by a couple was sailing the waters around Clearwater when the ship collided with a huge object underwater. The impact nearly threw the couple and their friends off the side of the vessel. One of the couple's friends, a seasoned diver, offered to check to see if the boat was damaged. Diving into the turquoise water, the man swam over to the side of the boat where the impact was felt and saw hundreds of small gashes in a vertical pattern. Running his finger across them, the gashes where deep but not enough to compromise the integrity of the hull.

Swimming back to the surface, the man informed the others of his discovery and had no idea what could have caused it. Mere seconds after he got back onto the boat, the yacht was hit with another blow from underneath. The impact nearly lifted the ship completely out of the water. The impact was accompanied by the sound of metal and plastic crunching followed by the sounds of water flowing. A trip below deck revealed several enormous gashes and almost the entirety of the floor missing. Water rapidly filled the lower deck as panic ensued. The crew deployed an inflatable raft and abandoned the ship.

The couple watched as their several hundred thousand dollar ship was slowly swallowed by the sea, the only traces of it's existence in the form of floating debris. Suddenly massive fragments of the boat surfaced next to the raft, covered in a foul-smelling thick ooze. Terrified, the people quickly turned the raft's small fan on and made a beeline for shore. Unknown to them, an enormous shadow beneath the waves followed the raft for a short while before vanishing into the depths. The incident was reported to the coast guard who launched an investigation into the mysterious object that collided with the yacht.

The ship was located by divers and investigated, where they discovered what appeared to be a huge bite mark where the second blow to the ship was reported to have occurred. Whatever took a bite out of the boat removed the entire lower deck floor as well as the engine. Nearby, other fragments of the vessel where located that bore similar marks. Measurements of the hole where taken as well as a strange hooked object resembling a tooth. The tooth-like fragment would be sent to NOAA for identification and study.

Later that night yet another ship would be attacked in a similar fashion, this time a fishing trawler fishing for crabs and lobster. The ship barely made it back to port before sinking in the harbor with a gigantic hole bitten out of the side. Rumors of a sea monster began spreading like wildfire, now with two vessels and the dead whales bearing the same size bite marks as well as some fishermen's fish-finders picking up a massive object underwater. The issue was compounded further when more dead whales began to turn up, again with enormous bites taken out of them.

Analysis of the tooth came back revealing that it was very similar to that of a Frilled Shark, but this particular specimen would need to be titanic in proportion to damage ships and whales. The tooth was also saturated with Nebranium radiation, which had been found in smaller mutants in the aftermath of the Ashdowne explosion, as well as the Progenitor. This evidence seemed to fly in the face of the official story of the Progenitor being a unique anomaly, as here appeared to be proof that there was another mutant monster prowling the waters.

A naval strike group had been dispatched to hunt down and kill the monster on July 4th, lead by the aircraft carrier USS Richmond and supplemented by two Los Angeles-class nuclear submarines. The monster was quickly located via aircraft and the ships began to bombard the sea beast with their cannons. Most of the projectiles missed their mark, spewing up geysers of water. Those that hit the creature succeeded in driving it into deeper water; whether they hurt it or merely annoyed it was anyone's guess.

The submarines pursued the monster into the depths as the naval vessels where redirected towards shore where apparently another monster had surfaced and was terrorizing the beach. The enormous Frilled shark had seemingly disappeared off sonar in the pitch black depths. The submarines stayed on high alert for any signs of movement. Suddenly the creature sprung out of nowhere like a snake striking it's prey, biting into the side of one of the submarines. Metal buckled and crumpled under the pressure of the creature's jaws.

One chomp after another succeeded in eating through the submarine's hull and gutting the vessel. Alarms blared and water rushed into the various decks as the creature swam around the doomed sub, biting into it several more times before sinking with it into the depths. The surviving submarine attempted to surface and regroup with the main strike group who where having difficulty so much as injuring this new mutant, a many-tentacled horror resembling a starfish. The shark followed close behind, not intending to give up the fight so soon.

The submarine returned to find the enormous starfish gripping the USS Richmond with it's powerful arms; thousands of tube feet ensuring an iron grip. Sensing the presence of potential prey, the shark broke off pursuit of the submarine and instead bit down on one of the starfish's many arms. The shark's teeth crunched through the starfish's armor where naval cannon shells had failed. The huge echinoderm let out a grumbling roar as it's tentacle was torn from it's body, white strands of tissue pulled apart like hot cheese.

This was followed up by a torpedo barrage from the surviving submarine. The torpedoes succeeded in aggravating the creature further, causing it to hoist more of it's body up out of the water and onto the deck of the aircraft carrier. Aircraft where swatted off deck by the huge creature as crewmen jumped into the water in an attempt to save themselves. This was in vain, as from below the shark attacked again and swallowed the men whole in an attempt to bite down on the starfish.

The starfish grumbled again as it lifted up a section of it's body and exposing it's mouth. The echinoderm sprayed the shark with powerful digestive juices that made the fish immediately reconsider it's attack. As soon as the shark let go, a nearby destroyer acquired it's target and fired a barrage of cannon fire into the starfish's exposed mouth. The beast roared and it's whole body spasmed with pain. Another volley punched clean through the starfish's soft underside and out the back, blasting off an arm and causing the creature to lose it's grip and fall off the half-sunken aircraft carrier.

It was here the shark made it's second attack, swimming directly into the center of the starfish's soft underside and biting with it's massive jaws. The echinoderm responded by coiling several of it's arms around the fish and squeezing. Though the shark was used to crushing abyssal depths, the starfish's strength was quickly surpassing it's tolerance. Tentacles coiled tighter as the shark twisted it's serpentine body, denticles sawing into the echinoderm's flesh. The two beasts hit the ocean floor, kicking up sand and silt as they tumbled across the sea floor, locked in mortal combat. The starfish snaked two of it's tentacles around the shark's head and jaws in an attempt to pry the creature's mouth open and spew a jet of digestive juices directly into the fish's mouth. The acids ate away at the shark's flesh as the fish continued to lash out, snapping at the tentacles of it's attacker.

The surviving submarine moved into position and set it's sights on the warring beasts and armed it's torpedoes to destroy the abominations once and for all. The creature's where totally unaware of their imminent doom, as neither could gain the upper hand over the other. The submarine fired a salvo of torpedoes at the monsters, each scoring a direct hit and clouding the water with a mix of both creature's bodily fluids. However through the silt and blood, both creatures could still be seen thrashing around, still determined to kill one another. Another volley of torpedoes collided with the monsters, several explosions blossoming on their bodies as the thrashing gradually stopped.

After several moments went by, all was still as the stilt and blood clouded waters began to clear. Both hostiles had disappeared off sonar and no visual activity was detected. The crew of the submarine reluctantly reported that the creatures had been destroyed. Later on, divers where sent to locate the remains of the creature and prep them for recovery and disposal. Several chunks of the mutant starfish, code named "The Kraken" where located, but much of it's remains where still unaccounted for. The mutant shark, code named "The Leviathan" was never located although several pieces of flesh that had a 98% DNA match to the tooth where found. The Navy concluded that the creature was either critically injured or had been totally annihilated.

In the event that either was still alive, another strike group was permanently stationed near Clearwater to patrol the waters. In an attempt to ease the public's concerns, the remains recovered from the two creatures where shown to the public as proof of their apparent demise. Afterwards, tissue samples where taken and the remains where incinerated.

Another wonderfully weird and horrific monstrosity! Will we ever see that other mutant (I think you said it was a giant boar?) that the Firstborn fought?
