Description As I promised to some of the people here, I'm releasing the first tutorial here.

This is the tutorial for how to do soft cell shading on Photoshop, based on my experience.

The version of Photoshop used in the tutorial is 6. If you use later versions, names of tools/modes and/or allocation of shortcut keys might be different.
I'm working on Windows, so if you use Mac please change these notations as: Ctrl to Command, Alt to Option.

I just hope it helps you.

on stage 2: base color, you can go to select > modify> expand after you've selected with magic wand tool. this gets rid of most jagged edges. =3

Very very good help! But in the stage 3 when i use the group the thing you have mentioned doesn't happen to me!I have the 2 levels on the same group but,the the first don't mask the second??can u help me??Maybe this not happen in CS2 edition?Cause with ctrl-g i can only create a group!

The shortcut has been changed between CS and CS2. On CS2, it's Ctrl-Alt-G and the name of the function is "Create clipping mask".
Use Ctrl-Alt-G for creating clipping mask on CS and later instead of Ctrl-G.

Xblacker In reply to ??? [2009-01-26 13:37:00 +0000 UTC]

quick question, how do you change a black and white picture to use colours, i can seem to use colours on my lineart, also im confused about the background white and the lineart being on seperate layers, cos whenever i load up my picture, its always autmatically is the background layer, the white and lineart included.

LittleMissChocolate In reply to Xblacker [2009-01-27 21:58:07 +0000 UTC]

Is the image mode on photoshop set to Greyscale or RBG (Go to Image - Mode to check)? And about the lineart are you saving it as a JPEG then putting it onto photoshop or did you save it as a PSD first? If you're saving it as a JPEG, those pictures can't handle transparency, and will automatically merge all layers. So if the lineart program you use can save the image as a photoshop, do that.

Xblacker In reply to LittleMissChocolate [2009-01-28 10:32:29 +0000 UTC]

ahhhhh ok i didn't know that, on the first point i did manage to figure out how to change it from greyscale to colours, and that was what you said, but you must be right about this, cos i followed your thing exactly then i saved it and reopened it and was like wtf lol, so damn, and i assume theres no way of going back without restarting the whole thing.

LittleMissChocolate In reply to Xblacker [2009-01-28 15:17:28 +0000 UTC]

Oh no, if you saved it as a file that's used for the program, like with the GIMP its type of file is called XCF, the file can still save it with layers, so just open the file you made the lineart in that has layers, as re-save it as a photoshop.

Nice tutorial It's really helpfull. I seem to be doing something wrong though. I set a layer (on top of my shade layer) to color dodge and used a white brush with 10% opacity but it only makes my shading a bit lighter.. (I'm using CS2 btw). Could you help me with this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

getty In reply to b10a [2009-01-25 11:58:03 +0000 UTC]

When you use dodge, fill the layer with the neutral color, that is black, then use white brushes.

Hahaha.

Ah but hair is sooo hard. Especially when u lineart it on a tablet.

Question, how old were u when u drew that lineart in the tutorial? (For comparison reasons, you don't have to tell if you don't want to).

because for a first anime drawing. ITS DAMN GOOD.

The end result is amazing, but I suppose I'm too much of a nooB to understand EVERY step.
Merde!

If you get the time, PLEASE let me know where you got the original line art. Do I somehow have to draw it myself?

Thank you for helping. Take care.

Grazie é caio.
