As I promised to some of the people here, I'm releasing the first tutorial here.This is the tutorial for how to do soft cell shading on Photoshop, based on my experience.
The version of Photoshop used in the tutorial is 6. If you use later versions, names of tools/modes and/or allocation of shortcut keys might be different.
I'm working on Windows, so if you use Mac please change these notations as: Ctrl to Command, Alt to Option.

Question: I have Photoshop CS2 and CS3 (on a different pc), but grouping as described in your tutorial does not create that mask that only allows coloring over the base layer... DO you know what option that would be in my version?
I'm guessing it would be the add layer mask option, but it doesn't work quite as simple and not in the same order.

The shortcut of grouping has been changed between CS and CS2. On CS2 and later, it's Ctrl-Alt-G and the name of the function is "Create clipping mask".
