Description
Another orc going "Rawr".I tried Bainbridge illustration board for this one instead of my usual Crescent 310, and I must say I'm not a big fan of it. Any scrubbing or blotting I did started to lift the surface of the paper along with the water and paint, so it started looking tacky after about two layers of washes. It also sucked up the paint so that I couldn't lift any of it without messing up the board itself, and it threw my values off especially in rendering the skin.
Anyway, this started as a doodle in my sketchbook. Yes, I do draw orcs more often than some of you think. I don't hate on them all the time. I'm tempted to paint another one since this one didn't come out so great. I'd just need to find some time to do it.
Watercolour, dry pastel on Bainbridge 2200 Cold Press Illustration Board.

I reckon the texture looks nice, personally. It looks airy and easy to look at.
Its right arm is at an awkward angle, though - looks a bit unnaturally straight and thick for the pose its in.

It's supposed to be coming forward. I'm not sure if I got the perspective right on it.

I don't think it looks half bad, honestly. You've got some pretty nice depth going on.

Hmmm.... My Ogres are pig-men.... <_<.... >_> *gulp*
It looks really good. Seems more alive than most of your works. The proportions are better and it seems less mechanical.

Thanks!
I suppose that's what happens when I just let go and have fun with something. Otherwise I tend to tighten up and it shows in the final result.

Try and keep it up, it's an improvement.
The wrists specifically are a lot better.

odd that you had such a bad time with the BainBridge.... mind you I use 80 and never had much trouble with it... but you can't soak in down to heavy.. more for drier medium, then water colors

I noticed. I used it for acrylics back in 2D design class, but I never tried it with watercolours before. I suppose it's not meant for that sort of thing.

I rather like the savage pig-man style orc. I think it fits them better.

I think so too. I tried to go for a sort of "D&D orc + roid rage" feel.

Too often I see people doing samurai orcs and all kinds of other garbage. Orcs are brutes and savages. They are a monster race. Their name means demon. They should act their species. Fantasy is the one place where racial stereotypes are not only encouraged but considered iron clad. The D&D demuhumans handbook excuses this by telling us that humans are the only race capable of great variety of personality. I think the issue is that we have only human behavior to base characters off of and so they subdivide certain characteristics and traits into racial stereotypes to give fantasy worlds diversity while adding nothing new. So I suppose you could say that fantasy races are more archetypes which can be played along with or in rare occasions against.

And that's what makes things really frustrating sometimes; those stereotypes keep things so set in stone that there isn't all that much room for "creative interpretation". I don't mind seeing things out of the ordinary once in a while, but that constant needs to be there for that variety to have any sort of effect on the audience.

I think if people want to make drastically different fantasy races they should go all the way and MAKE new ones. Like go back to folklore and use Scandinavian trolls but don't call them by their English name. Or make up a new and comprehensive lore for them. In my White Knight comic I made my goblins umpa loompa colored and the dwarves were mountain goblins who could make themselves invisible because I found folklore to that extent. In the past everybody assumed Tolkien and now they assume D&D which is mostly derivative of Tolkien. I think it's time to crack open the mythology and try some new material.
