Description Watercolour on Arches 140 lb. Cold Press Watercolour paper. Original size appx. 9 x 12 inches.

When I ran the poll asking which of my San Diego sketches I should make into a watercolour painting, the overwhelming response was for this one. I did the majority of this painting while I was away at Solomon's Island, Maryland.

Here I was going for something mellow, but not depressing. I used earth tone washes as the foundation for the rest of the piece, making sure my colours didn't get too saturated. After that, I built up layers of more earth colours, dropping in some more saturated pigments when needed (mainly in the flesh tones of the dwarf's face). A lot of blotting was needed to keep all the washes from bleeding together and forming soup on the paper.

I know where I made some mistakes, and I'd go back and fix them if I could, but watercolour is a medium where corrections are difficult once the paint has dried on the paper. I also wish I had Aegerine (PG23) so I could have mixed some richer flesh tints. Overall I'm pretty content with how I did, considering the circumstances. (Maybe later I'll upload a photo of my setup while I was working on this piece.)

I almost feel bad for him, and then you know... (while not judging a book by it's cover) I'd still say he looks like he can take care of himself!

He could, but at the same time he could use an umbrella.

Very good
I love watercolours.

The only critique I have is that it would look better if the pupils where spaced apart a little bit more. He looks like his going cross eyed.

But other then that, a most excellent painting

mindflenzing In reply to GH-MoNGo [2007-08-19 04:22:38 +0000 UTC]

The way the color looks. I've seen it in books and as backgrounds in shows and I could never figure out what medium they were using. I thought it was probably a dry one, boy was I wrong.

I like the grayer look in this painting. Also, I always wanted to try out water colors, but I always end up ruining it because of the time limit I get in my art classes :[ I hate pressure

Dude I think you've found a medium that works very well for you..this is great work
And maybe you don't want to here this. But I think Illustration in childerns books would be a great area for you to look into... there is work in that field... you should start asking around the writers forums here if any of them do kids books.. you may find you get takers for art work for their books... or seeing as you've got good writeing skills.. maybe pick up some simple books for ages 3 to say 6 to get the feel of them. Write a couple of stories, then do the art for them.. and toss them at the publishing companies that do kids books. Just a thought... but this style goes so well with the kids books.

GH-MoNGo In reply to SiteLine6 [2007-08-19 02:27:50 +0000 UTC]

Alright, thanks!

Yeah, my parents would probably disown me if I went into childrens' illustration; they wanted their son to grow up to be a mature, hard-working contributor to society, not some "kiddie doodler". (That's part of the reason I stopped doing art around age 10, because my parents didn't really like my cartoons.)

SiteLine6 In reply to GH-MoNGo [2007-08-19 02:31:30 +0000 UTC]

hum theres nothing wrong with doing childerns Illustrations... and it's a start or foot in the door.
once you've been published it opens up a whole lot of other possibilities.
So you don't have to do kids books for the rest of your life.. many of the greats today started off doing stuff in other areas from what they do now.

Nice one! Have you ever used masking fluid? It might have been nice to use it to pick out a few raindrops with brilliant white. Also some white highlights on the dwarf would make him look more wet. Of coarse you could use Gauche for highlights too.
