Description Watercolour on Arches 140 lb. Cold Press Watercolour paper. Original size appx. 9 x 12 inches.

When I ran the poll asking which of my San Diego sketches I should make into a watercolour painting, the overwhelming response was for this one. I did the majority of this painting while I was away at Solomon's Island, Maryland.

Here I was going for something mellow, but not depressing. I used earth tone washes as the foundation for the rest of the piece, making sure my colours didn't get too saturated. After that, I built up layers of more earth colours, dropping in some more saturated pigments when needed (mainly in the flesh tones of the dwarf's face). A lot of blotting was needed to keep all the washes from bleeding together and forming soup on the paper.

I know where I made some mistakes, and I'd go back and fix them if I could, but watercolour is a medium where corrections are difficult once the paint has dried on the paper. I also wish I had Aegerine (PG23) so I could have mixed some richer flesh tints. Overall I'm pretty content with how I did, considering the circumstances. (Maybe later I'll upload a photo of my setup while I was working on this piece.)

I didn't have any mask with me, and even so I didn't have a brush I wanted to sacrifice to it's clutches.

It would've been a good idea though, I do admit. I used a bit of zinc white mixed with grey for the raindrops, but they ended up darker than the sky.

Thanks bro! I remember you said you wanted to see some fantasy stuff in watercolour when I uploaded this. I'll try and do some more stuff between now and the end of the summer.

Yes that the thing about masking fluid isn't it- that and the forward planning. It seems unnatural to me to put in extreme highlights at the start of a piece. You could try using a small piece of paper rolled into a sharp cone as a masking fluid applicator instead of wasting a brush.

you can get workable liquid masking to cover over and seal the painting, then add to it.. the masking should still take the paint over top of it. so you don't have to lose a brush or mess up the painting

Is that workable mask ammonia-based? I've tried a lot of different brands of masking fluid and they're all hard on brushes.

I might try a masquepen; maybe that will work too.

The stuff I have is Methyl Alcohol based, so no Ammonia and it drys more like useing hair spray to seal.. but it don't yellow your work like hair spray and you can go over top of it once it's dry. and it drys fast
The stuff I use is called Blair (no odor workable matte fixative.

Excluding the rain which seemed included into the background rather half hazardly; the composition of the piece is quite nicely executed. The colours were well blended and chosen for the environment you were trying to portray and set the perfect mood for ambient effect on canvas. The scene depicted reminds me of the 1980’s cartoon Flight of Dragons which non-coincidentally enough I just finished watching recently again in the first time in well over a decade.

Yeah I admit the rain sucks. I forgot my liner brush at my house; I should have waited until I had access to it before attempting to paint the raindrops.

Thanks bro!

You really did good on this one. You could make a story book with these watercolour paintings you've been doing.

The way I look at watercolours is making mistakes on purpose. Its the mistakes that can make it look good.

That's true, but it's the mistakes that can kill the piece too.

Nice one! Good work on the flesh tones, those can be tough to do in watercolor.

Totally, man. But you nailed it on this one, there's a good range of values. Keep up the good work!

Thanks bro!

Yeah, flesh tones can be annoying sometimes, since watercolour has a tendancy to dry lighter than it looks wet.
