Good tutorial but there is the easy and quick way doing separate layers (characters and background) using Mask Mode. Do you know it?

You've got a layer BG (Characters and BG in one layer flatten)called "Lineart Below"
1. Make a new layer call "Lineart Over"
2. Go to "Lineart Below"(BG)Select everything(Ctrl +A)and copy it(Ctrl+C)
3. Got to "Lineart Over" fill in Black color.
4. Go to Mask Mode
5. Past Everything (Ctrl + V)
6 . Go to Normal Mode.
Delete what you selected (canc or del)
Deselect everything (Ctrl +D)
Delete "Lineart Below" layer
You've got one transparent layer with Lineart and no BG
Enjoy and good Luck!

Thanx In truth, there are other ways to get photoshop that I can't mention... I'm lucky enough to have it at the office for work, but not everyone is that lucky

Right, I'm slightly behind in this (Sorry Hugo), but have finally started it... But already having a few problems..
When it comes to duplicating the channel, the channel options I get aren't the same as yours (I'm using CS3). I don't get a choice of "Spot Colour" and "Colour/Solidity"
My Outline now is red (??). How do I sort this as have had a look around the menus but still got nothing

Hey Spidey0107, I was following this tutorial and got stuck at exactly the same point as you. I'm using CS3 as well. When you duplicate the channel, it doesn't give you the options presented above, but name it 'outline' and create it regardless. Then, once it's made, double click it, and the spot colour options should appear. Hope that helps!

No problem, it should be easy to fix, double-click on that "red" channel, and see if the pop-up window that shows up has thos options, if not, message me back and we'll go from there

I have the same problem but I'm using CS5 and I don't get that channel option pop-up.

hmmm... you have a newer version of Photoshop than I do, so I'm not sure how it works, but when you double click on the channel don't you get extra options?

None what's so ever but after I darken the lines and clean it up I don't really need it anymore.

Thanks. I'm not comfortable with using channels and have been using changing the line art to multiply and putting it above the color layers.I also have to coppy it and put it below all the color layers with the blending on normal.
Is this a very bad way to set up line art. I also use curves to get rid of grays.

There's no perfect way to set up your lineart, depending on who you talk to, there are different ways of using the same techniques. I usually use the channels version in the beginning because it makes the file smaller. The way you're doing it at the moment, there are 2 extra layers waying down your computer while you work on your. I like to keep the lineart out of the way until the last stages when I add the effects and the colour holds. But like I said and will keep saying, do whatever you feel confortable with, because at the end of the day the client is generally gonna get the finished piece and as long as it's in the right colour mode etc. you should be fine.
