'What did you do?!' Your friend says, her hand coming up to her face in shock as you walk through her front door.

When you left this morning, you had waist length platinum blonde hair. She had carefully and meticulously guided you through the process of growing it out from your short brown boy cut and getting it to the perfect colour over the last few months.

However, you’d grown tired of the stereotypical barbie look and knew if you were truly going to embrace the rules she had set you, you needed to do it your own way. You’d gone to the salon and had it chopped into a chin length bob and dyed a fiery, dark red.

Your friend runs her hands through your hair, you see a twinge of sadness in her eyes as she reaches the ends so quickly. She takes a step back and looks at you closely. You nervously await her reaction.

She takes a deep breath. ‘Okay. It’s okay. I’m a little mad you didn’t tell me but if you’re going to a salon and asking for a feminine haircut, I guess that’s good progress.’ Now the shock has worn off she takes a step forward and fusses with your bob, trying to arrange it just how she wants.

'It's cute. And edgy. I like it.’ You breathe a sigh of relief. ‘But it completely changes your style. We need new makeup, new clothes, new everything. Come on, we’re going to the mall.’ She picks up her bag and grabs your hand, leading you out the door. She stops suddenly and squeezes your hand tightly.

'This worked out well, but if you ever try anything like this without my permission again there will be consequences. Understood?’
