Description It's been a while since I drew my favourite blue vixen, Krystal, so I thought I'd try my hand at something elaborate in a fantasy magic painting. This was done shortly after openCanvas 5 was released and despite some cool new features, it was extraordinarily difficult to render the special effects with oC's limited filters. It's easily my most technically challenging painting to date. This was also showcased on the Krystal Archive, which helped the Event playback on YouTube gain exposure. I'm delighted with the result and I encourage fellow artists to look up similar recordings on Portalgraphics for inspiration and tips on how to paint in openCanvas.

YOU CAN WATCH A PLAYBACK OF THIS PAINTING HERE .

Impact

If there is a phrase that could explain this image in a nutshell, it's: "that's one tough girl". This image shows what Krystal should be seen as, and not what most fans currently see of her. Krystal is a unique, yet complex Nintendo character, and is underestimated all the time both by fans, and sometimes even by game companies themselves. This image clearly shows how powerful she actually is, and she is anything but an average girl. There were obvious reasons why Fox chose her as his girlfriend/fiancΓ©e/wife, and unlike the beliefs of many, looks aren't exactly the sole reason why I believe he made that choice. Her perseverance, bravery, inner and external strength, and compassion are qualities that should be more explored by both fans and "cannon designers", and if it depends on designers like glitcher, we'll easily transmit this idea.
As for the image itself, the effects, background, and lighting are flawless, and Krystal on the CloudRunner looks amazing! There really isn't any other way to say how awesome this deviation came out; give yourself a pat on the back! We'd love to see more drawings like this in the Starfox fandom.

I really hope Krystal gets her own game. And a good one at that.
Wait a moment (This is gonna be out of context but I wanna post a comment I did to an a rumored Dinasty Warriors type Starfox game that seems to have been cancelled:

SERIOUSLY?! I'm sitting here, always thinking how epic it would be if Krystal would get her own fighting game in a similiar style to Batman Arkham, Bayonetta, Hyrule Warriors or Heavenly Sword and it COULD HAVE ACTUALLY HAPPENEND?! I don't know if I should be happy or sad about this information... Man, I really hope Krystal gets her own game, she can be introduced into the Starfox continuity later on. Make her look kind of like this: destinyspider.deviantart.com/a… and have her get to use the abilities she seems to have, which by now have only lightly been scratched upon. Her telepathy as an gameplay mechanic would be so cool, and because of it, it would also be okay if she had some kind of Spider-Sense. Make her superspeed (Starfox Assault Multiplayer) even greater, and make her be able to dodge attacks with flips and spins like in Dinosaur Planet. Overall make her an fast, intelligent, lighthearted but still serious badass. Makee her staff's abilities totally over the top, the laser beams blasting enemies apart, the ice freezing dozens of enemies at once, the earthquake breaking an radious of 30 meters of ground. Then have her staff's abilities to fly for a short amount of time or to use telikinesis and integrate that into the game. Expand upon the spiritual power Krystal seems to have (Shooting exploding blue-white energy balls at Scales ship till it went down) destinyspider.deviantart.com/a… and make her have some super-mode (where you push in the left and right stick) where she is immensly powerfull destinyspider.deviantart.com/a… and finally give Krystal a character! I always felt bad for Krystal, because of how her game got stolen from her and she got reduced to a damsel in distress. That would be Nintendo's chance to fix that. Get Krystal some respect already! Then, when Krystal finally isn't just a hot vixen anymore, you can put her somewhere else, like integrating her into the Starfox franchise again, AFTER having Krystal's own story told. And, when she and Fox would get together to be a couple again, then first give her a reason to love him. Or overall, to join the Starfox team, because that really doesn't seem to fit her lifestyle. ...

Well, I hope there are some out there who agree with my opinion.ο»Ώ

...sorry

Nah, no need to be sorry! You added a comment at the right time! January 12th is Switch Day, and the day we are hoping that will begin Blue January. Krystal has great potential as a character, and if it were for no Platinum, and more involvement from Q-Games, we'd probably wouldn't have seen the disasters called Zero and Guard on the Wii U, and a Krystal game of some sort to take place of Guard. I envision an RPG for her, something like Adventures and Klonoa/NiGHTS fused together: each level is half real-world, half dreamland/illusion. It would occur after the explosion of Cerineria, and Krystal's crash on Sauria. Past, present, and future haunt her: bosses we saw in Adventures, such as Sharpclaw, would return, as well as "illusion bosses", enemies resulting from Krystal's fears and bad memories. In the spirit world, recently deceased Randorn meets up with James, and put Fox as her spiritual guide, which is their first encounter (despite being spiritual, not physical), and they eventually discover that even with totally different lives and battles, they share a lot in common. The final boss would probably be the Krazoa spirit, resulting in an auto loss, but the beginning of the events in Adventures as well. This could be an epic beginning to expand the Starfox series, but Platinum's response to this? "Can't let you do that, Q-Games!"

This is an really awesome idea.
An RPG type would be awesome as hell. I think your idea with some kind of spiritual world would not only be really cool, but also very fitting to how I imagine Krystal too
I hope she get's a lot of cool powers, concerning her spiritual energy she seemed to have in Adventures. Another drawing I made yesterday also Features a power I'd like to see (seems Fitting to me): some kind of energy-claw-blade-construct she can form aroung her wrist or something.
Just have to make shure that Krystal is far more powerfull than Fox (at least it would make sense in my opinion ^^)
Then we'd probably have her as one of the most badass female protagonists in media ever.

Man, you took the words right out of my mouth!! I just look at Zero in disgust; I though I was the only one. Just seeing "buffed up, old-looking" puppet Fox (both the puppet itself, the character design for him in-game, and that awful "anime-that-isn't-an-anime") looks like some child's worst nightmare coming true. And knowing that Shigeru pushed the "Reset" button yet again, even though Command wasn't that much of a failure, was really upsetting. Funny enough, the night before the nightmare, I had a dream of Fox and Krystal in an "ideal" game for the Wii U, and then that happened. Then again, what to expect from a company whose main female character is an angel-killing M-rated witch? Not much. What is even weirder is: (a) great time to get more details on Krystal and Kit (64 trainer guy), and excellent time to reintroduce Fay and Miyu. Didn't happen. (b) What's up with Slippy getting his own spinoff? Seriously???
I truly hope Q-Games, or even 1-UP, EAD, or Namco will have some mercy for this series and bring it back to life.

Thanks. You're right that Krystal can have so much more potential with better characterisation, yet Nintendo seems content to write her out of the series. That really pisses me off and is the reason I refuse to play Star Fox Zero. There was so much more potential to expand upon the story after Command, but instead all that was scrubbed in favour of another reboot. Bad Shigsy!

Never saw Krystal look so awesome & badass before. (Usually, people just draw cheesecake of her.) Very awesome colors, magical effects, movement, and everything. It's almost overwhelming how much detail is in this. Great job on her ride too. (Can't remember it's name "Kite?")

I know, it's hard for artists to think of a context for Krystal that originates above the waist. I always just called her friend a Cloudrunner, I don't remember its name because I didn't play Star Fox Adventures long enough to notice. I was sadly bored with the game.

Still, it's nice to see appreciation for her, besides for her figure.

Yeah, admittedly it didn't feel like a StarFox game to me. (Granted, it originally wasn't.) I still enjoyed it, but admittedly some parts were a bit dull.

The hardest part was getting the magic seal into place. As stated in the description, I had just downloaded openCanvas 5 and wanted to exploit its Free Transform function. It was only when I was halfway through painting that I realized oC couldn't skew objects into perspective like Photoshop (something which was corrected in oC 5.5). I almost gave up then and there in despair, but a lot of perseverance and experimentation yielded the result I was looking for. My only regret is that I had to paste the text in the bottom-left because of the Free Tranform glitch, which resulted on this painting being exempted from the PGN community.

Phoenaxis In reply to glitcher [2012-09-13 22:20:47 +0000 UTC]

That sounds like a nightmare ^^' I've become accustomed to the workings of photoshop over time so CS6 really is a firm favourite for terms of creation and being able to easily complete certain commands etc.

So being able to create this with limitations in opencanvas through pure perseverance just means you're talents bridge adabtability and makes this all the more amazing

That's a shame about not being accepted for the community, but congrats for your DD

Would you say you prefer working with opencanvas as i've ever only worked with Photoshop myself but think it'd be great to try some new software =]

glitcher In reply to Phoenaxis [2012-09-14 07:33:54 +0000 UTC]

Heh, I know what you mean. I used to be like you, thinking that Photoshop was the catch-all solution to all my artistic needs because it had the most functions. But when it comes to tablet painting, openCanvas wins hands-down. Its brush system is more natural and fluid than Photoshop's. For example, if you paint blue onto orange in PS, it just looks like one colour on top of another. If you do that in oC, the colours blend together, giving a more dynamic shading and vibrant image. It's also much quicker to change brushes and sizes through hotkeys in oC. After I first used it in 2008, I never went back to Photoshop for painting; I only use it for editing and texturing these days, which is what it was mainly designed for. As an added bonus, openCanvas records your moves as Event files, so you can create a video playback like the one in the description.

So yeah, if you have a tablet I say give openCanvas a try. It may take some getting used to, so try downloading Event files from other artists on the PGN community to learn their technique. Some artists also like using Painttool SAI, which is better at painting textures than Photoshop or openCanvas, but isn't much good for anything else. Development was abandoned after the first release.

Phoenaxis In reply to glitcher [2012-09-14 21:01:38 +0000 UTC]

That's just it, i've only ever used Photoshop so i've got to try broadening my horizons and openCanvas sounds amazing, I find myself having to use alot of tools just to get colours to blend nicely and I try to work with alot of shading/lighting and textures.

Thank you for the advice man, i'll definitely give it a shot =] i'm still getting used to my tablet but it'll be good to practice with capable software.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

glitcher In reply to Phoenaxis [2012-09-16 18:50:41 +0000 UTC]

Good luck with that. Your first task will be to create your own custom pens and brushes, so it's important to learn the settings and how well each tool blends. Strong blending is recommended for wide, flat surfaces like the walls or sky, and minimal blending is used for detailed areas. I'm here if you need help.

And I love you for replying! There's nothing wrong with traditional media. A lot can be accomplished with the right skill, which I can see you have (love the eye drawings!), and it creates a more natural texture than digital media. You mean you only have Microsoft Paint? Ouch. I remember trying to colour my own gradients pixel by pixel on that before I learned Photoshop. LOL! It's true that image editors take a lot of time and patience to learn, but you can still build a great portfolio with the traditional illustrations you create.

I have always loved Krystal ever since she was in the original Dinosaur Planet game for the N64 before it got canceled and turned into StarFox Adventures for the Gamecube,

so sad that there was not many scenes of her in the game, the next StarFox game I think should be about Fox trying to search for Krystal on a native wildlife planet and Krystal having her own on foot adventuring stages while Fox has his Arwing missions of trying to search for her while also fighting enamies that want to kill him off before finding the planet that Krystal is on.

including both of those elements of StarFox 64 for just Fox and the Adventure levels with Krystal, that would be the sort of game I would love to see on the WiiU
