Description Well, here it is. These are the techniques and methods I have learned that have made life easier for me when sculpting. I have learned these from many people and many sources and make no claim that they are my own exclusive techniques. To that same end, other people will have their own techniques they like to use and it just comes down to finding what works best for you.

To view the tutorial, click that little down arrow in the row above or full view to download the full file. It is large and I appologise for that, but there was a lot to cover. I may be able to make it smaller when I get back to my own computer.

I tried to put in as much as I can, but I'm sure there are questions that will still arrise so feel free to ask. Also, if you use this and create something, I'd love to see it, so please note me

Let me know too if you guys would like a tutorial on specific sculpting techniques such as for hair, fur, fabric, etc...

To see the finished maquette used in this tutorial, click here [link]

Hope this helps you out in some small way

Very nice tutorial. I don't think I've seen a scuplting tutorial on DA before, so kudos for new unredundant info . I'll have to try this super scupley because this regular sculpey really is a pain in the butt.

wow, thanks so much for this tutorial! i really need to start sculpting again, i miss it. it's fascinating how you make the armature with foil (after the wire) i always just did wire and went right into the clay stage, but that makes a lot of sense, you save so much more clay that way.
thanks again!

GoblinQueeen In reply to bizarro4 [2005-01-11 06:29:54 +0000 UTC]

no problem It's actually a little safer with the foil, too, I think because it has more give and you don't have to worry about expansion/contraction as much with the heat.

bizarro4 In reply to GoblinQueeen [2005-01-12 01:20:20 +0000 UTC]

oh, so you don't pack the foil too tightly so it has some give, that makes sense. i once made the armature badly and it ended up sticking out of a leg somewhere, which sucked.

Aww Well, I've had some issues, but usually I find creative ways to cover them

hm, i should find better ways to cover up my msitakes. or i could just be more careful and make a more precise armature!

Wow, lots of really great information there! I especially appreciate the advice on the baking heat/time. I was always worried i would burn the clay. Anyway, i don't know if i will be able to do anything anytime soon, but i will be sure to note you if i do, and i will be saving this for future reference. Thanks for taking the time to do this

No problem I know little things like how to make the armature eluded me for so long, and then once I found out, it made all the difference. There were sculptures I wanted to make that I never did because I couldn't figure out how to support them right. And of course, what's the good of learning something like that if you can't pass it on? Can't wait to see what you come up with

Wow, excellent stuff! I've been working with both sculpey and super sculpey since I was a little kid, but I sure learned a lot here. I had no clue you could make a sculpey slip. It may also be time to bug my mother about the way she's been telling me how to make armatures. I think I learned more here than I have in the past several years.

And no, I'm not kissing up to get siomething. This is an excellent tutorial!

As an amendment to what you were saying, something that works faily well for small sculptures, if it's available, is miniature paints. While expensive, the primer used for them is usually quite excellent, plus the paints are thinned enough you don't have to worry about clumps. True, the latter is the lazy boy painting style, but for small detail it can be invaluable.

One other thing is that thin sheet metal, especially brass for smaller pieces (perhaps 6 inches in height) can be excellent for wing armatures.

Well, that's probably why all my sculptures in high school ended up looking like... um... mooshy lumps of clay, LOL. When I get my hands on some next I'll definitely implement this. Thanks so much.

Nice tutorial... I fully agree that Sculpey better be damned smooth if you paint on it... I use it for props and man can you see any flaws in the sculpture after you paint it.

Very cool and helpful. I really want to try this now. How much does super sculpty go for?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GoblinQueeen In reply to ExtremeSi [2005-01-09 21:04:35 +0000 UTC]

One box is approximately $6-7, and that's about 1 lb and enough to do a sculpture like this.

ExtremeSi In reply to GoblinQueeen [2005-01-09 21:57:39 +0000 UTC]

Awesome! That's not too bad at all, I was expecting a lot more. I've got to check out where to get this stuff now in Calgary, hopefully most art/craft stores carry it. Thanks
And you can just bake it in your oven at home right? I don't see why not...

GoblinQueeen In reply to ExtremeSi [2005-01-10 04:48:08 +0000 UTC]

Right, and all the materials are pretty common place, so you shouldn't have too much trouble
