Did you just use the silicone from tubes that they sell caulk in? Or were you able to find somewhere to get large amounts? I really want to start casting my own pieces, but i can't find enough silicone in one container.

No, I used a smooth-on silicone two part rubber... you can order online from several places. try [link]

No lol most of the time I think its the faeries finishing them! I'll be lost and go away for a while when I come back they don't look so bad as before! LOL Just this week I had trouble with eyes I made, the fimo gel went cloudy so trying to fix it I used a heat gun and burned the lid and nose and cheek on the poor thing ,so I had to carve it off and dig out the eyes. It was weird trying to rework the eyes in a baked head LOL It worked out ok.

TimBakerFX In reply to saray [2009-08-11 15:09:36 +0000 UTC]

You better! modding stuff is so much easier when you can cast pieces too *wink*

saray In reply to TimBakerFX [2009-08-12 16:03:49 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I want to make casts of some gears and such so I can use a lighter material than the bronze. I'm thinking about sculpting some big ones first.

And, I need to be able to cast stuff for my Mara Jade costume, like her blaster, lightsaber and the backpiece that holds her harness together

I'd love to make molds to pour pewter in. And I think I have the theory. But I need to find the materials now and the time not the mention the funds!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimBakerFX In reply to dragonladych [2009-08-19 20:44:02 +0000 UTC]

it's pretty cheap, I think you can melt pewter with a butane torch (under $10 at the hardware store) and you can use plaster for the mold (just make sure it's really realy dry or it could crack and burst open)

see, it's doable

dragonladych In reply to TimBakerFX [2009-08-19 21:10:59 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'll be testing this as soon as I can.

dragonladych In reply to TimBakerFX [2009-08-20 06:49:16 +0000 UTC]

I'll post it here if I do.

I'm having too much fun with PMC as you might have noticed, but the pieces are a bit expensive for people to buy.

OMG Thank you. This gives me a good idea on how to use silicon to make masks. Would it be a similar process?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimBakerFX In reply to EmmyLou [2009-08-10 23:46:39 +0000 UTC]

You can even get a paint on silicone, then with a mother mold to keep it's shape (plaster works fine)
