hello~ im pretty new to this BJD doll making~ XD i have only started in my research today and only learnt of the information that you can make your own BJDs a few days ago even though i have been interested in doll customising for quite a while now XD
so i was wandering, how would you make a double joint? i dont quite get the inner workings with the hidden second socket?
also, i am tryin to make my own BJD but i am not quite sure how to make the body hollow? Sorry for bombarding you with so many questions QAQ

Congrats for discovering this hobby!
So, basically you sculpt the inner part first, then make a slightly bigger hole in the outer part, apply some clay and stick the inner part in. Wait for the outer part to dry. You have 2 fitting parts.

If you want a hollow detail build it over something that you use like a base, i.e. styrofoam or foil, and then remove the base -> you get the hollow piece.

I'm making my first BJD, but getting good spheres from molds is giving me a harder time than I thought. It's the first part of the process and the most difficult!
Do you have any tutorials to recommend for making the hollow balls?

scargeear In reply to Droemar [2017-12-20 05:47:49 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, why do you prefer them to be hollow? There is an engineering issue with the doll that has hollow balls, ot's described here in my mod tutorial (left pane, middle of the page):

Many BJD companies make hollow thigh balls because of production technique. The rest is not hollow usually. Everybody just drills the channels as needed. And I strongly prefer the balls to be not hollow so the pivot point is in the center of the ball.

What I do if I need a hollow shape: I put a layer of Apoxie or whatever I use into the each half of the molds leaving the insides hollow, then press both molds together so the putty sticks to each other. Then let the thing dry. It may not work properly after you take the pieces out of the molds, so you have to glue the pieces back to each other.

Well, I attended on online class where the balls were hollow, and I'm pretty new at this myself, so I suppose I don't have a point of reference because I'm so new to the hobby. I guess I thought they had to be hollow.
Does it affect casting if they are or are not?

scargeear In reply to Droemar [2017-12-23 19:42:07 +0000 UTC]

Aha, that explains everything...
If the doll is not porcelain - hollow balls have no sense. Porcelain (or flumo and alike pourable clays) has a certain technological restrictions because of the way the casts are made. Polyurethane can be casted in any way you want it, just the molds will be different. And if you make the doll out of self-hardening clay or epoxy putty, it's better to make a non-hollow joints.

Hello, nice tutorial but please excuse my noob question!
I'm going to make a doll body for the first time (a two-legged dinosaur actually). I wonder what holds the joints togheter and make them stiff. I realise this is a total newbie question but I hope you wouldn't mind answering, becouse I haven't found very useful info about this unfortunetly... *_*;

Take care! ^^

Thank you!
Well, BJDs are strung with elastic. To help create friction in joints you may glue a piece of a thin suede or leatherΒ  inside the joint.

Well it doesn't look like you live the average joe 9-5 office jokey sort of life. Β Weird for me means a person who helps aid the progress of human evolution simply by enjoying doing non traditional things. As Martha Stewart might say, "It's a good thing" *hug*

Believe me, I work in office 40 hrs per week, though my schedule is flexible. I'm involved in IT industry so your suggestion about aiding the progress is true for me in the both fields But I love the way of life you described here, and maybe I'll be brave enough to leave my main work someday. This is really great! Thanks!

I have a question for you, i'm looking into ball jointed dolls for stop-motion animation. Do you think it is possible to use that type of dolls? Do they hold properly for a long pose? Is the clay you use to make them is heavy?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

scargeear In reply to Shadowplum [2013-04-15 15:21:14 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome!

People shoot BJD stop-motion already, please search on Youtube and see the possibilities.
The dolls can hold the pose nicely being properly strung. It also depends on the level of engineering: some dolls pose better than others.
The dolls made out of Apoxie is rather heavy but I try to make the details more thin and lightweight. Polyurethane dolls are lighter. The weight of the doll depends on many factors though.

Is it possible to make a porcelain doll jointed? One that has been already made? I have a doll from a long time ago that I recently found, and it would be so amazing for it to be jointed. ^-^ But I know porcelain is easily breakable, so I don't know.
Also, if I were to make my own doll, would it be possible to make one out of Crayola Air dry clay? XD I don't have the money for a kiln, and I've just recently gotten into the idea of making my own dolls (my friend got me watching Rozen Maiden... =- So yeah.
Thanks!

scargeear In reply to derpgamer12345 [2012-10-23 08:48:40 +0000 UTC]

I'm sorry if I understood you incorrectly, but:
1. It's possible to make porcelain ball-jointed dolls from the scratch.
2. It's nearly impossible to insert joints into already made porcelain doll.
If you have some antique doll my advice would be just to enjoy her the way she is. I'm afraid modifying her body could ruin her(((

I never worked with Crayola clay so I don't know how strong it is. Usually air dry clays are not strong enough to bear a regular usage of the dolls for play: sculptor usually make only one of a kind dolls for display or prototypes out of that kinds of materials. Joints should be reinforced with epoxy putties at least to play with a doll. I prefer making playable dolls out of Apoxie Sculpt or Magic Sculpt, those materials are much stronger than any air-drying clay.

If you have some other questions you are welcome to ask.
