Quite a cliffhanger. I'm standing by with heart-rate increasing...!

Emerging from cold sleep?Β  Transits between stars, or at least distant stars, require considerable time?

Of course, even if the transit time is relatively short, putting nonessential personnel 'out of circulation' so as not to waste environmental resources might still be recommended?

The trip (which will be explained later) has already been almost a year long, stopping at 2 other systems beforehand to set up small operations in them as a relay, or in the case of some of the private companies that accompanied the expedition to begin setting up some mining or surveying operations on a planet or asteroid on their way. (these systems have not been completely explored, just stopping at the first two closest contacts, dropping off a 'mobile colony' and moving on)Β

And indeed. Nonessentials for the most part were put out. Though at this point in the expedition everyone has already been woken up except the marines. Those that have been awoken (for the most part) already been distributed to the outposts and operations already set up those that remain are the few designated to take part on this last colony set up, which has been reported as an Earthlike world. So a larger civilian population than most other stations or outposts already set up, and a larger operation as a whole here.
The marines are only deployed in a small platoon sized element though to the colonies the UCR has interest in as a precaution, not as the primary security. For the most part, security is handled by a Private Firm on this expedition.

Thanks for the info.Β  Are there multiple ships in this expedition, given the 'planting' of colonies?

There were 10 starting out. There's 5 left in the expedition as the other 5 stayed behind to help set up outposts and keep watch.

The 5 Ships are theΒ

UCR Frigate "October"
UCR SuperColony ship "Gagarin" (Largest non-military ship ever built. Specifically constructed for this expedition)
UCR Government Science vessel "Galileo"
Trident Corp. Freighter "Vir Fortis"
FrontierTech Mobile Colony ship (un-named because they're not meant to be a ship for very long)

The mobile colony ship gets deconstructed to make the colony base?

The Supercolony ship sounds interesting.Β  Makes me curious about the expedition.

Only a frigate for defense?Β  Well, fine if no trouble is expected, but it clearly suggests that, indeed, no trouble was expected.Β  I wouldn't expect too many marines on board?

Yes exactly.

Probes were sent out beforehand (which will also be brought up later) The planet they were headed to was the target, the systems inbetween was just additional territory and new materials to exploit.

*cough* as far as you know *cough*

There was about 180 on board, about a small company element. They PMC's were to handle security for the most part. The marines are there if anything gets out of hand
