Description "The one issue about fighting on a desert world is none of our shit works. within the first day, our filters were clogged with sand. There was even so much goddamned particles of sand in the air, and smog, that our lenses would literally go haywire. So it was back to the basics. Air was still breathable, but riddled with dust. A lot of our vehicles got clumps of sand built up over a single night, and it created mayhem on our armor. The Ygunovians were already adjusted to this world. We weren't. And that's what made it hell for us."

- Unidentified Confederate Soldier, following the Invasion of the Gastrun Commonwealth, for the battle of the Ygun System, on the planet Akkrit 2771

It was the last war the confederacy fought in leading up to the current date.
The battle for Akkrit was one of the toughest. With Dust storm nearly every day, and winds reaching nearly 50mph, the attacking confederate force had to brave some of the harshest weather, only to; after securing the planet's surface: battle it's way down into hundreds of sub levels in an underground military installation, to effectively cripple that system of it's ground force.

The central soldier is one that has appeared before. Private Alexis Kiv [goeliath.deviantart.com/art/Co… (i'm gonna have to give her a promotion or something, because 2 years into the military and still stuck as a PV2 is the sign of a shitbag >.> maybe PFC...)] In the 141 Mechanized Infantry, who were known for bravely charging a vital enemy position, after being pinned and having shells dropped on them for hours, and successfully capturing it from the enemy; allowing for the advancement of the remainder of the unit and whatever armor still remained.

In the background Armor support is being given. The entire battle for the planet overall however, was not won by the armor, but by the infantry, as nearly 75% of all vehicles were crippled due to the weather, and sand, dust, metal fragments, and other objects finding a way to lodge themselves into the inner workings of the vehicle.

Private Kiv and the Confederacy of Sovereign Colonial Nations are creations by me in my setting

Figured you guys were sick of standard concepts and were as hungry for some action as I was.
Was listening to "Thief" By imagine Dragons. goes pretty damned well with the image

As always, Comments and Feedback are GREATLY appreciated

Damn dude, this looks amazing and its real great to see one of the named characters appear in combat. Man I'm just sort of at a loss for words on what to say here.

Fuck I wish I could Art T_T

Just the end result of me testing out a bunch of new styles and different techniques! I figured I do some lore on characters and kiv just seemed to be the appealing choice!

Too speechless to know what to say? XD

You must not wish! You must do! or get someone else to do for you >.>

As I recall everyone loved Kiv way back when you first put out that reference picture so she probably was the best choice all things considered. Can't wait to see more of this type of stuff dude.

goeliath In reply to Pyromaniac275 [2015-06-29 04:00:39 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yeah I recalled that too. I drew a couple pictures of Kiv that never made it up on DA as well because, y'know. Band wagon and all that.
And I've got other images planned out... -_- but the setting hasn't started and a lot of the images would be spoilers of some kind... (well most of them, and I hate telling stories before their time >.>)

But yeah, expect more stuff, stories pre 2773 and all that.
(And the First story of the actual timeline, not sure if I said this or not already, but it IS well underway.)

I was originally going to name this image: Unafraid Just Like A Thief, but I figured that would be too obvious.
Something about Eminem's song just doesn't have the epic feel that the Imagine Dragons song does though.

Welcome to Tatooine! The sand world that people can actually live on! Even if they can live on it, I don't see why they would.

Akkrit? nah, nobody lives ON it. they live IN it. Unlike another notable desert world Oasis, there's literally almost nothing on this planet's surface. There is oxygen due to the Gastrun Commonwealth's attempts at Terraforming it years prior to the invasion, but as the lore goes, the oxygen is pretty stale, and it's thick with sand and particles of dust. They would clog ventilators, and the use of carry O2 pouches was deemed unnecessary by the Confederate government, as the O2 levels are still good enough to breathe.

But yeah, nobody really lives on the planet's surface. Everything is below ground mostly.

The-oTTerboT In reply to goeliath [2015-06-28 06:52:23 +0000 UTC]

Shit, that's detailed.
Reminds me of that planet from Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, where the surface is a complete wasteland while all the civilization existed underground.
Magrathea, I think was the planet's name...
Yeah, that's the name.

And then a whale mysteriously appears and smashes into the planet leaving a crater, a secret entrance, and a pile of bones.

Pff! That entire setting is the most bizzare one ever! But so many witty little jokes in there that ya gotta love it
Yeah that's kind of the feeling here with the wasteland vibe though. But the Terraforming is to make it a lot less shitty, and more habitable. THe confederacy still keeps the Terraformation plants running to the current date.

The-oTTerboT In reply to goeliath [2015-06-28 07:19:15 +0000 UTC]

You know what practically every faction in my universe would do to this planet?
Glass it and move on to the next.
Why waste your time on dirt when you could be attempting to steal valuable territory from other empires?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

goeliath In reply to The-oTTerboT [2015-06-28 07:32:24 +0000 UTC]

The fact of the matter is habitable worlds aren't as easy to come by, and many of the ones currently habitable are all thanks to Terraformation started hundreds of years ago in the 2100-2300's when humanity was sending a ship to just about every system they could.Β
Not to mention all the water and resources that lay beneath can provide for the ever growing need of metals to construct weapons, ships, vehicles, buildings, etc. It'd be a horrible waste to glass a planet Mid Terraformation and literally ruin everything you've worked so hard for.
Most of the invasion and ground battles take place on Terraformed worlds in the solar system (usually only about 1-3 habitable worlds if it's a solar system similar to earth) because nobody is going to care if you land on a rock that has no source of oxygen, or water for that matter (that just means you'd have to have some sort of way to ship water and oxygen to those soldiers, wasting even more resources). The real prize is land that may be of use one day. Land that may become large agricultural worlds to feed an ever expanding human population, or land that may be converted to large industrial or city worlds. If you glass a planet, it means all the effort your putting in to taking the world is completely wasted.

No territory is valuable if it doesn't provide a major gain. Just 'having territory' does nothing. Only increases a border you have to stretch your forces thin to patrol.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

The-oTTerboT In reply to goeliath [2015-06-28 07:57:22 +0000 UTC]

I probably didn't mean to say "practically every faction."
Probably more like... Just the Arun Hunters. They're stupid. (And I meant before all the terraforming happens)
Now the Abilessians, they'd be smart enough to actually take a moment to analyze an unexplored planet, see if it isn't actually as pointless as believed.
Then again, most of the planets I'd have in my story go far beyond the currently observable galaxy, meaning that there could be more naturally habitable planets than originally thought (Also making the non-habitable planets much less desirable/needed).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

goeliath In reply to The-oTTerboT [2015-06-28 08:03:19 +0000 UTC]

there are about 400 billion systems to be estimated in our solar system.
Humanity hasn't even scratched the surface. I think the solar systems we've explored is around 50,000-60,000, and we've colonized far less. (either because the systems have no possible habitable worlds, or we just haven't gotten to them yet. But humanity at the current date is quickly beginning to close the gap on the ones we havent yet colonized)
So with the expanding human populace, any habitable rock, even a wastland such as this is a prize definitely worth fighting for.Β

I see what you mean. Anything that can be used, should be used as efficiently as possible.
My story simply takes the Borderlands route, saying that 'everybody is either a soldier, a bandit, or a civilian that doesn't belong here.'
And all the big factions would rather take the most resourceful planets first and leave the scrap planets to the rejects and bandits.

Well, what I'm really doing is trying to find the most productive way to effectively make images. All these small changes, and different styles are all tests, but still serving a common purpose like establishing lore etc.
But yeah, all these tests and me practicing new styles is all to try and advance myself.

Salt water? So an ocean? or liek it rains salt water? Because that's not a half bad concept I gotta say, haven't thought of that one yet!Β

The more complicated something is, the faster it breaks down. Other factions may have better technology, but you should never count out guts and spirit.

goeliath In reply to Sarconis-the-Artist [2015-06-28 04:40:48 +0000 UTC]

Fighting spirit is definitely what the Connies have, for sure. They're around so much lower tech that they kinda have a knack for using everything to it's fullest potential.Β
This is the nation where you'll find some real good scrap mechanics, or guys that know their way around dozens of weapons.Β
And yeah. They may not have the best weaponry like the Terrans, or the greatest armor like the Staevik, or even the medical advancements of the Xenos. But these guy have tools that they know how to use VERY well

Daemoria [2015-06-28 01:36:43 +0000 UTC]

This is a great look at the shit soldiers have to go through. The small bits of realism like the vehicles being disabled by the horrible conditions are what makes this work so well.

Confederates bit off a bit more than they could chew it seems, and over estimated their technical prowess. IΒ  guess when it comes down to it, legs will continue to work, even in the shittiest of conditions.

Kiv's and the rest of the trooper's uniforms look amazingly detailed. As much as you might not like doing the purely concept based images, it leads to strong design work, and takes the guess work out of complicated scenes like this. Instead, all you have to do is figure out composition and poses. Speaking of which, pose work is good... composition is a little wonky, and could maybe be helped out by extending the frame left by another 20% or so. It's a little cramped right now.

Rendering of this image and you other recent digital works has really stepped up. The lighting is getting damn good.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

goeliath In reply to Daemoria [2015-06-28 01:50:27 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! It's always those desert and snow worlds that does people in, which make them great holdouts. Forcing your enemy to land on the shit conditions, and try to pick away at them as best you can, hiding in the dust.

The confederates are by no means the most advanced, and largely use older out dated technology. They pride themselves on the ability to wage war with older stuff. (but their 'older stuff' is still usually more advanced than a lot of other nations, so you're not wrong there) What they lack in technology compared to the other superpowers they make up in essentially everything else. Mechanics, training, etc. So yes and no. Technology isn't THAT great, but they know how to use it.

Thanks! Sticking to the original Confederate uniform, but detailing it so it's not so "meh". I think they'll get an armor upgrade eventually in the timeline, but for the current era they're sticking with this.
Yeah I was thinking of trying to put in a little more, but by the time I wanted to do that, most of the stuff was already colored, and it was too late for me to try and fix it, but I get what you mean.

Thanks! I'm really trying to push myself to catch up to everyone else and close the gap
