This was a bit of an odd pic for me; I knew the reason I paired Antoine with Fluttershy is because they have a mutual fear of "everything", but somehow it felt wrong to make their scene together center around being scared. It took some thinking, but it finally occurred to me that there was another character connection that was a bit more in keeping with what I wanted to convey, namely their unique sensibilities for the "finer things" of life if you will. Thus was this little scene born. ^_^

Can I just say that I totally adore how you drew Ant here? You made him so darn cute. ^_^
I could also see Antoine getting shown alongside Rarity, but I agree that there's some Fluttershy-ish aspects to his character. Sadly, Antoine's fear usually gets painted as outright cowardice, compared to Fluttershy's timid nature, which is sometimes (but not always) depicted as a character flaw. I like a number of the stories that show Ant grappling with his insecurity, in any case.

Thanks both to his character development in Archie and the influence of Ant-fan , I sympathize a lot better with Antoine's fear these days, and I think that trait is closer to his "true" personality than the more uptight, "Knightly" image he tries to project. I thus felt his connection with Fluttershy would ultimately be stronger than his connection to Rarity, despite the fact that they too share similarities. Thanks for your observations.

You're right. The parts of Rarity's personality that are dignified and 'royal,' shall we say, actually seem to come naturally to her, but not so with Ant. Thank you, it just reminds me of how much I like Ant. ^_^

Yes, that's it exactly. I think Ant acts "refined" because that's what is expected of him (both by others and himself); Rarity acts that way because that is the standard she holds herself to, a source of pride and strength for her. ^_^
And yes, Ant is a likeable feller. <3

...oh, my, this was unexpected. Were it left up to me, I likely would have had Rarity in Fluttershy's place, as both of them are obsessed with living the dignified and refined life. And she definitely would have choice words for someone trying to woo royalty. ^_^
But the situation you come up with sells this in the end. It's sweet, and kind, and you certainly picked the only pony in the cast who wouldn't have otherwise overshadowed/overpowered our poor coyote here! So it all works out.

Given how frankly obvious the last two were (and, really, Sally/Twilight is pretty clear-cut to me as well, but at least mildly less so), it's sorta funny to me how many people are being taken by surprise by this pairing.
I agree, Rarity would also have worked, but particularly after what I saw of her in "Art of the Dress", I actually felt there was a compelling connection for her elsewhere in the cast. Meanwhile, I've taken a fairly sympathetic view of Ant in recent years, and thus find his natural cowardice to be more in line with Fluttershy's timidity, and since both characters are very strongly defined by that aspect, it just fit for me.
Heh, yes...just two pairings more left, in fact.

Ok all the others I expected (of course 2 were obvius) This one, however, I wasn't expecting. I was expecting Rotor in place of Antione since they both try to be the nice person (or pony) and both are kind of shy around new people, or at least Rotor used to.
But now that I see this, I totally see the two compared to each other. I think it was mostly because I couldn't see Rotor compared to Pinky or Rarity. And I'm gonna go ahead and make my guess that it will be Rotor&Rarity and Tails&Pinky. And I have my guesses as to why, but I'll keep them to myself and see how you compare them yourself.

You're the second person to point out the idea of a Rotor/Fluttershy pairing, and while it never occurred to me in my planning of this series, I admit it does make some sense to me now that others bring it up. Still, ultimately I think Fluttershy and Antoine's shared timidity is stronger than her and Rotor's shared social awkwardness, and Rarity and Rotor...well, you'll see when we get there. ;3

I can see the Rarity connection now that you mention it, but Fluttershy simply seemed the better fit in the end, especially when one takes into account Antoine's character development in the Archie Comics.
