Description Oh simple thing,
where have you gone?
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on,
so tell me when
you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin...

This might be the best SATAM artwork I've ever seen. It's also sad how much I actually relate to this picture.

Now this is powerful Satam art.

Well done.

The contrast in emotions are downright amazing.

...OK, first line of the song + this pic and now I'm choking up.
I'm one more who is pulled in by SatAM because of this; the themes of lost innocence and lost... All the things you took for granted.
And, frankly, how industrialization, no matter how rationalized, can ruin things that are worth much more than "efficiency" and "productivity" if it gets out of hand. Which is something I also think is a central theme in SatAM, if never spelled out. (You "live" forever as a robot, but you lose what makes you alive. Robotropolis is likely effective and smooth running, but also, for most purposes, dead.) The gray wash really helps bring the point home, because of how vivid and warm the colors are in the past and how dull and lifeless they are in the present. One world you can't stop looking at and one that you wish you didn't have to see.
Yeah OK crying now. Great.

...I think upper Sally's right leg should be a bit longer, and I might have softened /fuzzed the clouds' edges a bit more on the "past" half, but that's my only valuable crit today.
Is this watercolors, or watered out acrylics, or what?

Aww, there there, it'll be OK...^^
I think the loss of home and innocence and the life you are accustomed to is a crucial aspect of SatAM's power as a story, perhaps THE crucial aspect in many ways, and so when I do pictures like this I want to drive that point home as powerfully as possible.
The way the precise mechanics of Roboticization plays into the idea has never quite occurred to me ('til now; well said, my friend ^_^), but yes, another of SatAM's strengths is how its premise successfully communicates the "natural and joyous" vs. "artificial and lifless" conflict not by way of hamfisted message-mongering but rather by weaving the idea right into the premise of the show. It's akin to why "WALL-E"'s environmentalist tone never feels preachy, because it flows so naturally from the story and characters that it doesn't feel forced.
And aww, , dry those tears; there's always hope.

And ugh, don't get me STARTED on the clouds in the top half. lD; This was made with goauche, but given my limited funds I've had to rely on the same goauche set here that I used for school projects, leaving me out of white goauche and forcing me to resort to a white acrylic I had which wound up being very, VERY uncooperative. XP Thanks for your crits, tho, I'll definitely keep 'em in mind. ^3^

The power of catharsis... (The sad angle to this particular catharsis is of course that the themes of SatAM are essentially happening all around us, right now.)

Yes... I think one of the main strengths of that show is that it shows and doesn't tell when it comes to the environmental message. Okay, they say right out that the big city smells bad because of all the factories, but that's not preaching. It's just explaining to a kid why the place is stinked up.

Agreed on WALL-E. And there's so many other dimensions than "just" the environmental message in that one. On a tangent, apparently the creators never intended the anti-consumerism message that some assume to be the big idea about the film. I think that they were more focused on the ironic distance between people in an age with so many communication devices. Anyway.

Uncooperative media are a pain >_> I don't have too much money for art supplies either, and it's delayed some of my drawings because I just won't color them with what I have now (<--insanely stubborn).

Gojira007 In reply to bitchwolf [2011-02-12 08:14:58 +0000 UTC]

Yes, catharsis is a powerful thing, and the most powerful themes are the ones that are ALWAYS happening all around us...

Plus there's the acid rain thing from "Sonic's Nightmare", but like the stench, it's a necessary byproduct of the plot.

Yes, I've read the interviews; Stanton was very upfront that his primary concern was the WALL-E/EVE relationship, and that the humanist/enviornentalist part of the story was a happy accident.

I too am struggling with finding the right coloring tools, so I sympathize. ^^

bitchwolf In reply to Gojira007 [2011-02-12 16:29:43 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, those are what we need to think /feel through, after all. And yes, the acid rain works, because it's part of the plot and used as such, not shoehorned in just to get to mention it.

On a related note, I loved (James Cameron's) Avatar. Yes, there's an obvious environmental message. But for me, the real main messages were 1. "you are intimately connected to the world around you, whether you realize it or not" and 2. "appreciate what you have, before you destroy it".
I heard people became depressed after watching it "because they are not on Pandora". Personally, I was like a giddy child when going outside after that movie. Just because trees in real life don't glow in the dark (nevermind that some do) doesn't mean they're less amazing. (Or to flip the perspective: if they'd lived on Pandora, those people would soon have seen nothing amazing about the glowy trees. It's not in how your world looks, it's in how you look at it.)

That makes me think Stanton's mind is simply wired such that when he looks for plot twists and devices, it finds those angles without trying. Stories focused on a single, defined problem or message (political, environmental, etc) might be great stories and give a good overview of the problem itself, it's just that the world isn't divided into discrete units and problems, and I'd love more focus on how we could come up with solutions.
I think what I'm getting at is, our connection to other people (social environment; relationships) runs on the same engine as connection to our ecological environment. If you view it that way, then the external themes in WALL-E seem like a natural extrapolation of the premise of the relationship - for instance, taking the step of thinking /feeling outside your current box and discover the joy of really caring for someone /something, rather than mechanically following directives.

...Inktense pencils are my latest discovery. They're like some kind of hybrid of watercolor pencil and ink, so they blend well, and they let you put new layers on top of them once they dry. I see reviews are mixed from professionals, but I like them so far. They're a bit pricy though; I'll have to flirt with my friends for my birthday XD

I must admit, I am not the biggest fan of "Avatar", though not specifically because of its thematic content; I just felt there wasn't a whole lot about the movie that engaged me at any level beyond the visual, and even then I wasn't too keen on the overall aesthetic. Still, that's just me, and I fully appreciate how others can feel differently. Certainly, I'm always glad to know when a work of Art can provide someone with joy and inspiration, even if it didn't do so for me personally. ^_^

Well put.

Sounds intriguing, I may have to look into that.

Can't fall for all the same movies! In addition, Avatar also hit home with me because I identify so strongly with the detachment from your own body and learning to interact with your environment all over again. Not a movie I'm likely to watch again, but right then it was just what I needed.

They're definitely worth a test run.

More power to you for that; I may not dig it too much myself, but it's not at all hard to see how others would.

Hopefully I'll be able to find them, then.

What an emotional piece.

To be honest, this really digs at the heart of why I think I like SatAM so much. And yeah, that's the perfect song to go with it.

Beautiful work. I think you did a marvelous job juxtaposing the sad, murky present with the brightness of the past. Wonderful job on the colors, expressions, and details. I particularly like the King Acorn statue...

I've said it before, I'll say it again: the late great Ben Hurst was a man of many achievments, but I think the most significant contribution he made to the SatAM canon may have been the re-done origin story of "Blast to the Past", which inserted the powerful themest childhood that continue to resonate with series fans today. Much like with "Children of War", I wanted to capture that idea here.

And thanks for the kind words. ^^ Did you catch my shout-out to "Blast to the Past" in the statue's plaque, by the way?

This is good. For some reason, Young Sally's clothes make me think she's Arabic. But still, Young Sally's so cute. And older Sally just makes you want to hug her (but Sonic and Antoine would get jealous)

Gojira007 In reply to heavens-champion [2010-11-25 18:25:05 +0000 UTC]

Actually, young Sally's clothes are based on what we see of her in the "Blast to the Past" two-parter from SatAM: [link]

And Sonic 'n' Ant can get as jealous as they want, you should still give her a . She could use it. XD

I know. But she did look adorable in those poofy pants when she was little. But here in looks like young Sally is wearing a bodysuit. But anyway, who would have thought that Sally would grow up to be so beautiful.

I suspect the "body suit" look comes more from the proportions than the design; I'm pretty sure I kept the look the same. Either way, tho, thanks. ^^

The hazing effect comes from applying a gray wash to the whole upper half before moving in with other colors; it was a big step forward in my goauching, I think. ^^
